Good stuff! Good luck with the project. Dad used to put 50lbs to the acre and he would have a boat load of sunflowers come up but they were all really tiny because they were competing for same nutrients. Between broadcast spreading, birds and deer, you might be better off than some might think. Yes its high, but you are going to have a lot of critters coming for your seed and plants. Good luck!

Thanks. Yeah, there are some thick patches that we might thin if the deer don’t do it first. Next year we might mix seed and fertilizer like you did. I’ve seen that done for broadcasting corn as well.

I was going to make the same suggestion someone below already made. Spraying the field and mowing it first reduces the effort to cut the field in half. That green stuff is just a mess to deal with. Anyway, yall got it done and seeds in the ground. I am hoping you don't have too many deer eating on the flowers. A friend of mine used a solar powered electric fence to keep the deer out and it worked fine. He just had two wires no more than waist high. They could have jumped it but they did not. Good luck and looking forward to the follow up.

Thanks. Yeah, we knew that’s what we needed to do but we just got behind schedule with everything else going on and didn’t get to it. Trying to make sure we spray first next year to make it go easier. Luckily the deer don’t seem to be bothering us yet.

Spraying the field to burn it down a couple weeks before you start to work on it will make it 100 times easier.

How are you going to keep the dear off those sun flower plants?

That looks like a spring tooth harrow on your tractor. Looks like what you're doing works. You're putting way too much seed on, easy to do broadcasting. It stunts the growth when they grow close together. Sunflowers are cool, I love watching how the heads turn to face the sun during the day. More seed isn't better, been telling my uncle that for 10 years when we broadcast. Lol. I agree with the guy that said you should spray it to burn down first.just get a boom for your 4 wheeler.

Yeah, they ended up not doing well at all. They pretty much died before they made seeds and the cocklebur took over. We plan to spray before seeding this year and are going to use brown top millet instead.

Right on. Cockleburs are the bane of duck hunters! Lol. They follow us everywhere we go. I don't know where you're at but we've planted millet a few times in dry duck marsh. And it gets heat/drought stressed and dies. We've had good success broadcasting millet around banks as we slowly fill marsh starting early September here in western mo. Might try Milo for doves, its pretty easy to grow and heat/dry tolerant. We plant mid late may here.

Milo does ok broadcast so long as you don't over seed. Over seed makes crappy heads.we've been using planter last few years.

Some Fertilizer doesn't hurt either. If you're going through the time and money to plant, $100 of fertilizer is pretty cheap. Also avoid wildlife Milo it's more like sorghum and grows 6-8 ft tall.

I think we used golden millet though not brown so that variety might do good in a field.

Now there is something I really miss, dove hunting in Tennessee came second only to duck hunting. I sure hope you have some great hunting over those sunflowers 👍

I grew up in Kentucky and it was always an event for us as well. I just got back from the farm and they have started to sprout so its looking positive so far.
