Just an regular guy that loves duck hunting. No high dollar leases or heavy equipment, just focusing on what the average guy can do to increase the enjoyment of his time in the field. Follow along as I work to improve habitat for waterfowl hunting. We'll plant crops for ducks like rice and millet as well as work to improve natural moist soil habitat. All in the name of duck hunting!

Duck Hunting at North River Gameland Waterfowl Impoundment
มุมมอง 2.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
For the third year in a row, I drew a permit on Veteran's Day to duck hunt the waterfowl impoundment at the North River Gameland in coastal North Carolina. We had ducks and as always we had mosquitos. The state plants both Japanese and chiwapa millet and the waterfowl habitat was in great shape this year.

Two hurricanes and a very wet summer has made it hard to repair the dam in our waterfowl impoundment. Hopefully a yard of fill dirt will take care of the job.

I don’t think this guy could the the broad side of a barn with no choke in 😂
Thanks for watching.
Good luck my friend! You sure are working hard!
Thanks. And so far it’s not producing. ☹️
Suggestion for next video title: ASMR listen to your dad struggle with [stuff]
The struggle is real
I have the same pump and let me say that green hose is so stiff and hangs on every frickin thing in the water 😂 pain in the backside for sure 💯
You feel my pain. Lol
All that for a “stay tuned for part two”!?! Oh !! You got me.. 😠
I can’t decide if this video should be ..( A ) hardest way to change a spark plug or ( B ) Internal thoughts with Bruce. Haha I watched so intensely! 😂
I am the best at finding the hardest way to perform simple tasks.
How much fuel to pump it up once?
What do you mean by pump it up once?
If you were in Illinois you would need a pump for ice lol! Thank you for sharing my friend!
Ha yeah I heard
Get you some quick connects from Rural King. Makes set up and tear down so much easier.
Thanks for the tip. But if you mean, those couplers that kind of camlock on I’ve used those in the past and for my old arthritic fingers it’s pretty tough to work them in the cold weather. I typically keep the threads greased up and don’t have too much trouble. The problem is that intake tube is stiff and it’s hard to get positioned just right.
Seeing plenty of Woody's in ga but too much water.have had more cold weather so far than we've had in recent years.good luck
Thanks. Been dry here for a while but supposed to get 1.5 inches tomorrow. Hope the cold gave us some birds.
I have the opposite problem. Beavers are flooding all my property and creating too much duck habitat and the ducks are very spread out. The beavers are going to get the smoke after deer season
Be careful with that. The main Beaverdam on the creek blew out this past summer and it seems like there might be less ducks in the area now cause all the other swampy areas dried up. I’d focus on making a sweet spot. They always wanna come to.
Hey man liked the video a lot. I am brand new to duck hunting and live in NC. Do you know of any pubic land spots I would not need a boat for and would be willing to share.
Well depends on your area. I am familiar with the stuff around Raleigh. Most of those impoundments can be hunted without a boat but be very careful wading as there a few places where it can drop of and be over your head. Since the season is about to break, I’d encourage you to get out and scout them during the day to learn the areas.
You mean up in currituck right? I had a draw hunt there 8 years ago but it was pretty dead.
It’s not far from Currituck. I’ve only hunted it in November. Never drawn a permit for later in the season.
Thanks for sharing the video. I felt that fall in the ditch. I did the same thing at J Morgan Futch last year but in January. Those ditches are no joke.
Ha, thanks. If I’d been paying attention it wouldn’t have been a problem.
Wish my lab was that cooperative 🤣
She has her moments. 😎
Yall need a couple thermacells 😂 Ill be kicking off my duck season with some buddies after thanksgiving! We will be hitting an impoundment on the 30th with high hopes! Hopefully the NC weather stay cool for us!
Ha yes we do! I drew a permit for impoundment on the 30th as well, but had a conflict come up and won’t be able to make it. I’m sure that means it’ll be covered up in Ducks.
You most definitely killed one of those birds looks to be the second bird to fold was yours
I’ll have to go back and take a look but I recall seeing them fold before I pulled the trigger. We ate them all that night anyway so it all evened out. Thanks for watching.
I just subbed, I’m looking forward to more content. That’s pretty cool that your state plants millet to attract waterfowl. My state doesn’t plant anything on public hunting land, at least in my area.
Hey that’s great. Thanks for subscribing. NC doesn’t do it as well as places like Missouri but we have some nice spots. What state are you in?
@ Texas. Some of the public lakes and wetlands in my area have patches of smartweed but that’s about it for duck food.
Gotcha. I thought Texas has some pretty public land. But I’ve never been.
@ some of the best waterfowl hunting in the U.S. can be found on the Texas gulf coast. There’s a lot of public land down there. I live in northeast Texas, the habitat here isn’t prime like it is in other parts of the state.
Lynchburg sc and have more birds here than last 3 years for opening weekend Nov 23
That’s great. I think I’m seeing more here than I usually do this early. I hope you have a great season.
What’s your thoughts on the rain system coming over Fla into Atlantic, you think the pressure will push birds more inland on Carolina coast while the cold front pressure is pushing birds south n east?
Well I haven’t been following that system. I don’t think the cold front will really be all that cold but it should push a few birds our way. If the tropical system is just rain, they will hunker down until it passes. Might be a good hunt after that.
Nice hunt. I took the NC plunge myself lately.
Thanks. If you like woodducks, its a good place to be. LOL
Nice hunt for you all and glad it was a success, I got to shoot 4 times yesterday and of course I missed but had fun
Well it’s opening day and very warm but some cold weather is coming next weekend before Thanksgiving so maybe we will get a push of ducks from the north. Take care and I hope you get your hole in the dam plugged.
Yeah I’m hopeful. I think I’m actually seeing decent activity for this time of year. Had one dang near come in the blind this morning before sitting down in the decoys. To dark to get a shot off though.
Good work mate👍👍
Thanks!
Beautiful morning and you got some shooting! Thank you for sharing my friend!
Thanks. It was a great morning to be in the blind.
Hey at least you got to shoot, season opens this Saturday so we’re going to a new swamp since our chiwapa millet is dry and falling in the water but the ducks ain’t interested, I’m puzzled but hoping the migrating ducks will eat it
They will find it. Just be patient.
@ I’m trying, I’ll go solo Sunday morning and see what happens
Looking good!
Thanks!
Bruce, based on what you said and what I saw, I’d suggest setting up at the opposite end of your pond looking back towards the blind. Your woodies are passing thru, all the jerk strings/motion you can deploy isn’t going to keep them from where they are wanting to be. At least you’ll see them in time to shoot. Hunt your blind a little later. Best of luck. 👌
Maybe but that’s the first time they flown like that. Every other time I’ve hunted their they came from the opposite direction
@ Maybe so but everything I saw indicated they had roosted somewhere behind you and were heading over/away from your blind to feed elsewhere. Patterns change yearly.
I’m not sure if you’re using a jerk rig but I would certainly recommend one, 2-3 decoys on it sure helps. Good luck Saturday 👍
Yep. That’s the plan
We will be hunting our hole for the first time this year it has been setting for three years it’s 10 acres good luck this season and love the vids
Round up?! 😬 Crazy
Good work boys👍👍
Thanks!
Looking great!! Thank you for sharing my friend!
Thanks!
Not an expert in that kind of beaver 🤣
Just keeping it real.
Rosie wants some water to swim in!
Always
Been through 5 of these pumps in the last 3 seasons.
Oh man, that’s crazy. I abused the first one for 3 years and I’m surprised it lived as long as it did.
enjoy the updates and the progress through out the year. hope all goes well filling it up
Thanks. I appreciate it. I hope we’re able to hold water.
Sorry man
It been a rough summer.
Haha. The 220. I remember it well. Would go 75 mph on the side of the highway. It’s a miracle we lived past 12.
Haha it won’t go that fast with me on it!
Great job my friend! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks.
Nice progress on all things duckin’, no success on Saturday opener, saw 7 woodies and 8 mallards but no available shots…but we were hunting 🤣🤣
Sounds like a good start
I hope it works for you! Thank you for sharing my friends!
Thanks!
Good luck repairing the damn, maybe you’ll have enough water and food for November season. Our 2 millet patches are 1/4 down in water and the ducks seem non interested in eating it, I’m hoping it’s not dry enough…could be very disappointing
Thanks. Give them time. Might need new ducks to come to town.
The woodies are eating the pin oaks but just resting in the millet that I see on the camera
If they are there, that’s all you need! 😎
@@fowlplayoutdoors68 we’re gonna try em Saturday morning anyway
@ronracz9145 good luck. Let me know how it goes.
Wish my beavers would build us a ditch to flood!
It is nice to have their help.
How much roughly would it cost per acre to create an impoundment in a field just like that?
I really have no idea. If it was flat and already cleared it’s going be less than if you need to have the land cleared first. And costs will vary greatly depending on location.
You're working very hard my friend! I hope it all works for you!
Ha yes I am. Thanks.
Lots of work building a blind for sure, obviously I haven’t seen your damn but imo you should put 2 10” pipes in and pack them in clay..long enough to pick up one end to keep the water in the hole then drop them to discharge the water. Just a thought…good luck
That’s kinda what I’m doing. I have two 4” pipes. That drains it in a day or two. I’m going to work on it next week and post a video. Has your season started yet?
Good work, Bruce no👍👍
Thanks 👍
My millet done about the same as yours! Gonna fire the pump up today and start flooding! Good luck this season
That’s a bummer. I have a little more to do then I’m start filling it up.
Been a tough year! I wish you the best my friend!
Thanks, you too!
It’s been a difficult July - September for us duck hunters. I saw tonight we have had over 20” of rain above normal so far this year and we have 3 months left. Going to be an interesting duck season for sure.
Yeah it’s been insane. But I’ll save money not having to pump water. Lol
@@fowlplayoutdoors68 Then you can spend it going down east to hunt. I just got back from Canada boy was that the hunt of a life time. Then I have a hunt booked with my son in-law as he is a guide down in Currituck the week of Thanksgiving. I’m excited about that. How did your friends impoundment work out down east?
