TK recently did an interview with Crunchyroll (it's on their TH-cam channel) where he talks about his musical journey including discovering his unique vocal style. To this day he is entirely self-taught. He started out like you could imagine in his normal voice. When his band Ling Tosite Sigure rehearsed their demos in a tiny run-down studio he couldn't hear himself because his guitar drowned his vocals out. So he started to raise his voice an octave and it worked. The fault was btw the sound monitoring system haha. Obviously he learned a lot over the years (a lot of voice cracks early on but with practice they stopped), but he also expressed the desire to do voice training someday. LTS is btw a post hardcore/prog rock band with twin vocals (TK + the female bassist Miyoko). It's worth checking out one of their live performances (Dead is alive tour 2022 has lots of good ones like Missing Ling, Telecastic Fake Show or disco flight).

The video might be only 3 years old, but the song itself was released in 2014. So there is quite a time gap between this and his performance for the First Take
This video may be about his vocals, but more than anything TK’s guitar playing is wholly unique to him. He is one of the most fascinating guitar plays of our time, and his style is so distinguished.
100%, TK eschewing the sort of power-chord riffing you'd usually expect to hear in such "hard" music in favor of clear, clanging chords, arpeggios, and rapid funk-like rhythms completely changed the game. You could certainly argue that someone like Shutoku Mukai of Number Girl fame walked so TK could run, so to speak, but TK has probably inspired a whole generation of guitarists in Japan and beyond by now.
The First Take is basically an acoustic version. But this version is absolutely amazing, absolutely: th-cam.com/video/m0Fzb3FSqVA/w-d-xo.html If YT doesn't delete it, I highly recommend it.
Was able to go see TK live when I recently visited Japan and it was amazing! I've been to a few concerts and seeing TK live was a completely different experience. It was probably the first time where I got the feeling that it wasn't just music anymore, but art...
I've never seen someone give such an in depth technical breakdown of the artist and you even understand how to get to those ranges its like vocal teaching for novices and experts alike!
Chris, you are super educational and entertaining at the same time. Just love the way you respond and respect the artists. You are the model and the embodiment of constructive character that this world needs.
The singer's voice and the teacher's voice are completely different, but Mr. Chris, who can instantly express the characteristics of the voice of a unique musician, was so wonderful that I was stunned 😳 I am often surprised by the singer, but ... After repeating the voice of the previous video and today's video, I realized that the vocal coach is also very cool✨I want to continue to enjoy the skills of my favorite singer through Mr. Chris♪🎉
An interesting point, on the world tour (and others too), "Ado" band had keyboardist and backing vocalist Sara Wakui, and she is also part of TK's group, was on the recording of his last song, and is now on his tour.
The way you reacted to guitars reminded me of some other reactor listening to "first death" by TK. Full of guitars, super fast, screamy, also featured in the anime Chainsaw Man. Would love to see you check it out, it's super cool!
Man this takes me back, god this is so nostalgic. I heard this song the first time watching Tokyo Ghoul (This song was used for the opening theme of the anime tokyo ghoul). I was just so stunned at how much chaos this had but weirdly teetering on the overstimulating aspect for a song. This song gave me chills, a genuine whole body chills. I'm glad you finally reacted to it, finally the day has come 😭.
Since I first heard TK's music as a college student in Japan about 15 years ago,(「Imaginary Security」, Before his solo career the coolest song..) His aggressive guitar solos and delicate singing voice.he has remained basically the same. And now I am watching your professional analysis from across the ocean. Isn't this very nice and interesting?
I´ve been praying for you to do the original version for the longest time and now that it happened it took me 3 weeks to notice lol. Thanks for this! All we need now is the acoustic version and you´ll have heard every important version!
It's when you listen to this original version of Unravel that you realize that Ado was actually very accurate live to the original. And yes, Rock is alive. He's just on a world tour.
"Boukan" in it's live version specially, is also a very good one you may enjoy, the lyrics are very emotional and intimate, the singing has many nuances in it and there's an awesome guitar solo at the end. Also thanks for checking out one of my favorite singers, he inspired me a lot to start singing along with other Japanese vocalists and I had already waited years for an expert like you to analyze his mesmerizing voice!
Just fyi…. There’s a channel of “professional” vocal coaches that completely degraded and belittled him in one of their videos. So much so that the hate on them was so bad they had to make a re-reaction and then proceeded to do it AGAIN. So glad you aren’t brain dead and actually can appreciate they beauty in his art.
I know that many people start with live performances but I always listen to studio versions first. It shows the way the song is intended to sound like, plus it shows the artist from their best side. Live performances can furthermore be influenced by the artist's current wellbeing (just recovered from a cold, exhausted from travelling etc).
I've been hoping that you would do more TK he's my favourite singer, if you're interested in looking at more of his stuff from here I'd recommend Katharsis as a song which really shows off his abilities, or you could look at his first take performance of copy light which is really beautiful. If you're interested in hearing his screams I'd recommend Sergio Echigo from his band Ling Tosite Sigure's first album, tho id understand not covering it on the channel since it probably wouldn't get too many views.
Fantastic analysis 🤩 Just when I think “Wow that was cool. I wonder how he does that,” you are unraveling it before my thought completes. Always learn sooo much in every video. So much gold as a listener just wanting to fully enjoy the experience and as a singer wanting to learn from it. These are perfect examples and supplements for what you teach in your courses. ⚡️✨🌟🔥🎶
Yeah, it would be awesome if Chris could check out a song from LTS. They are a 3-piece with TK on guitar + vocal, 345 or just Miyoko on bass + vocal and Pierre on the drums. I would love to hear his opinion on their twin vocal style with TK's high vocals and Miyokos female vocals :D I think Miyoko has improved her vocals a lot over the years, so an analysis would be awesome.
one of the best, not only vocally, but also as a guitarist and composer, I recommend listening to his band, ling tosite sigure, one of my favorite songs is "telecastic fake show", "am 3:45", "disco flight", " abnormalize".Thanks for the reaction
TKs music is awesome, I especially love his bands early albums, they're such a classic, I wish we had better masters of them (he always composes/writes, sings and does the whole mastering of his bands stuff so early stuff when he wasn't as good suffered from it), but they're still very good albums, I especially love as you still a sigure virgin? it also has a track sung entirely by his bassist (a girl called 345). They do dual vocals in his band (ling tosite sigure) while on his solo stuff he mostly does only his own vocals (LTS lately has been mostly doing more experimental stuff though his earlier work was more raw rock)
Just came from your Ren reactions, I really love your in-depth insights to music and singing! I don’t hear a lot of reactors talking about head and chest voice, something I had drilled into my head during my high school theatre days. If we’re talking anime, Shunkan Sentimental is one of my favourite Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood endings, with an electric guitar intro that never leaves my head. FMA:B has a LOT of really good songs. I don’t know how often you take recommendations, but I think you might like an artist that goes by Will Wood, formerly Will Wood and the Tapeworms. His work in the Tapeworms era has a special feel to it, so strange and fun and messy in ways I haven’t heard modern music use before. “Hand Me My Shovel, I’m Going In!” Has a lot of pieces that make for an experience of a song, his use of head and chest voice is so mesmerizing to me, and the available music video to that song is an experience I can’t describe. Another great one from those days is “Mr. Capgras Encounters a Secondhand Vanity” and that’s just half of the title. I won’t get into “The Song With Five Names” yes, there are five of them. But that song is ALSO a really good one. My second favourite of the album. Of his current work, I’d reccomend Cicada Days. A very beautiful and powerful song, with a softer, cleaner, more mature feel that shines through the album (but only a lyric video to go with it). Going through his catalogue feels like you’re seeing the change as he works to be in a better place. “Against The Kitchen Floor” is another fun and personally heavy song, my favourite of that album.
Me too 😢. For such a masterpiece manga, to get that kind of halfhearted animation, really is an insult to the mangaka. I hope it get the Fullmetal Arcgemist Brotherhood treatment.
@chrisliepe hello from tokyo as a Japanese lady i really really like your reactions to things and how you pick out the smallest of details in songs within the voices that even other vocal coach reactors fail to realize or mention. Anyway i would love to suggest a song to you and that would be the song vanitas by dimlim its one of my most favorite Japanese songs ever and everytime i have shown this song to others they have been mind blown by the sheer talent from the entire group unfortunately they have disbanded and its sad but i really hope you check out and enjoy the experience and be mind blown like others who have seen it
I'm so glad that you started with the Ado cover of this song and finally got to this original. And I could tell you that you have loved this song very much long before you arrived this time.
Hi Chris! I highly recommend checking out Takanori Nishikawa - FREEDOM, the original song and THE FIRST TAKE version!! He has an insanely powerful voice that will blow you away!
For some reason when I hear TK’s songs, I feel at peace, like my anxiety just ceases to exist. He has such a beautiful voice. Please check out natori at some time, he has a unique voice as well
You should do a comparison between Imminence's studio and acoustic versions. Eddie hits some impressive high notes, and they've completely reimagined the tracks for their acoustic versions. The versions of "Wine & Water" are one of my favorites for this comparison.
Thanks for the analysis, if you want to check out more TK's vocal performance, I suggest you check out "Katharsis" which is also sing by TK. Also I recommend you to check out "Lemon" by Kenshi Yonezu, I think the texture of his voice is very unique and pretty interesting to check out

If Chris checks out a live version, it should be the one from the egomaniac feedback tour in 2021 on Zekken's youtube channel. TK is so passionate in that performance and obviously every support musician on that stage is so talented.
