I was around 12 years old when my mother had a box of AYDES hidden away and I found them and I snuck (or sneaked) something like 4 pieces. A couple of days later I was in a neighbors car, along with my mother, when the news broke about AIDS and how there was no cure for it, and I got really scared and confessed to my mother that ate some of her “chocolates”. Instead of being mad at me she reassured me that they were two different things. I was relieved! 😁

I also remember the commercials for AYDS, and, while I didn't understand diet pills (that was all boring adult stuff that didn't hold a five year old's interest,) I could tell that the people in the commercials seemed happy about it. So, I was a bit confused as to why it was scary for some people but happy for others.

My grandparents wanted her to be even skinner even though from what I have heard, my mom was like a model when she was young. Fuck drugs and stay straight edge.

For those that don't know, the way Ayds diet candy worked is that it contained Novocain which numbed your taste buds so you lost your appetite. It was a shame about the name because the candy actually worked, and it had no side effects or aftertaste.
I remember AIDS from the late 60s early 70s and I don't think they ever had novocaine in them I remember they were just sugar mostly I don't think they tasted that bad just not that good. The way they worked was you were supposed to eat it slowly with a cup of tea or coffee and it was supposed to fill you up a little bit so that you weren't so hungry.

I was once watching show at night and a commercial for the movie The Number 23 came on and then immediately following that was a Dr. Pepper commercial, talking about its 23 flavors.

My mom got them for my dad. I tried a few. Very chewy like fudge but tasted a bit like chewing tobacco. The idea is sound - eat a couple with hot coffee or tea an hour before eating to cut the gnawing hunger so you don't overeat.

PS: -I looked it up, and the time difference was something like two decades- This may have been confusing. The show was a couple years after the weight loss scandal. The second scandal was much later. The product was popular much before. I only knew about it because my dad used to eat those dumb waxy things in the 1970's and 1980's.
I remember as a kid going to the kitchen cabinet looking for a snack and finding a box of AYD'S inside. Apparently, my mom had bought AYD'S and was trying to lose weight with it. I'm happy to report that some four decades later, she is still alive and well, despite having gotten AYD'S all those years ago.

The most beautifully timed advert was when I watched the movie Castaway on TV. In that movie, the pilot is played by Vince Martin. In Australia and New Zealand, Vince Martin was the guy who did the Beaurepaires adverts from 1983 to 2013. In Castaway, there's a scene where Tom Hanks's character finds the pilot's body on the beach. Then there was an ad break. The very first ad was Beaurepaires! So, we see Vince Martin's bloated corpse washing up on the shore, and literally one second later he's flashing a smile and inviting us to buy some tyres.
I remember Mom having this and me eating a whole box of them. They tasted like chewy chocolate wax, but HEY it was chocolate. So much for being an appetite supressant!

My mom got them for my dad. I tried a few. Very chewy like fudge but tasted a bit like chewing tobacco. The idea is sound - eat a couple with hot coffee or tea an hour before eating to cut the gnawing hunger so you don't overeat.

I was in university in 1983; I remember the ads.
I’ve been HIV+ since 1991, lost a ton of friends who wasted away due to AIDS in the 80s and 90s, and I still find this unfortunate coincidence hilarious! 😂 Sometimes ya just gotta have a sense of humour. 🤷🏼♂️

PS: -I looked it up, and the time difference was something like two decades- This may have been confusing. The show was a couple years after the weight loss scandal. The second scandal was much later. The product was popular much before. I only knew about it because my dad used to eat those dumb waxy things in the 1970's and 1980's.

I used to work for Life Alert. They were actually a good company. Although, some of the sales people were a-holes.

The most beautifully timed advert was when I watched the movie Castaway on TV. In that movie, the pilot is played by Vince Martin. In Australia and New Zealand, Vince Martin was the guy who did the Beaurepaires adverts from 1983 to 2013. In Castaway, there's a scene where Tom Hanks's character finds the pilot's body on the beach. Then there was an ad break. The very first ad was Beaurepaires! So, we see Vince Martin's bloated corpse washing up on the shore, and literally one second later he's flashing a smile and inviting us to buy some tyres.
