I love that he cast Michael Rooker in a comedy. Rooker has such an intimidating presence and he's played so many violent roles that I'll bet he loved playing this dorky, gullible father even if he's still threatening. His head is shaved because they tried dyeing his hair gray because they thought he didn't look old enough to play the father of a college-age girl, but the dye turned his hair a weird color and so he shaved himself bald the night before the shoot.
I will add that Kevin Smith wanted William Atherton to play the part, but Atherton had had enough of playing assholes, and the producer knew Rooker from another movie they had worked on. His performance is so funny...on paper, it doesn't even look worth filming, but seeing Rooker shyly taking a chocolate-covered pretzel, then another...
