      It’s actually very common for Asians to help family members financially - even distant relatives to some extent. That’s one of the reasons why Asians climb the socioeconomic ladder quickly after immigrating here, but that’s just what I’ve experienced. I personally know lots of once poor immigrant Asian families who made it out the hoods of NYC because future generations become more educated than the last and work white-collared jobs, such as in engineering, finance, investment banking, etc. This is done while each member in the family takes up lower waged jobs at first to fund each other’s education. It’s part of our collectivist culture and ideology

    It boggles my mind that in a developed country like the US, education fees has become a business for student loan providers. In my country, there is almost no such thing as student loans, there are only scholarships, both governent and private. The students "pay back" by working back in their home town or get a contract with the private company for a number of years. Win win solution for all. Education should be about advancing people and the community, not jailing them in debt... Hopefully, this young lady & her family will go and do well after she graduates ❤

      It’s because the schools themselves profit from this model and it creates a filtered echo chamber that will refuse to change since no one who has to go through that will just offer it up for free
      America very much still has a classist system and higher education is the funnel
      It’s not merit based but solely wealth and connections. Only a lucky few such as the girl can get in but not without tremendous debt

      Same here. I barely understand student loans, what are they? How is the system? Because in my country (INA) there is no such thing. Fotunately I got a scholarship for bachelor.

      I honestly believe the US still don't have free college because the government wants enough people to work menial jobs that will not be done if many have college education. The US does this because it can. The moment college becomes free it is because things are going really bad that the country needs college educated workers.

      The question is why should a lot of these nonsense degrees be required for these jobs in the first place? To be a corporate executive or middle managers in some business these degree are not actually practically required or relevant even at these high end jobs, most certainly not required for the average white collar office worker. All these people with degreess are just diluting the pool of candidates for companies and making it more difficult to hire competent people. The smartest and the brightest should be the ones rewarded, not trying to shoehorn everyone into university because "equality". Pushing everyone to go into university has made these artificial requirements for degrees and continually encouraging people just makes it worse.

      You’re from EU aren’t you? I used to think the same, being from NL, all our public universities are around 1k in tuition fees but all top 100 world universities. However, you don’t understand, the salary in a top paying firm is incomparable to EU. Some starting salaries of $100k and can go up to 250-350k in 3 years. If y you are an engineer(then honestly you can get your degree anywhere it don’t matter much; but if you study economics, business, etc. It’s really hard to get a high paying job unless coming from a really good uni. Salaries in EU (even in London, Netherlands, Germany) are way too low compared to living costs. I lived in the US for a while, I dislike many things, but I must admit the salaries are very attractive.

      @@BuzziMuzzi And then you get ill and or have an accident and have to hope your insurance is good enough.
      Yeah, because the US is a stratocracy, higher wage earners get way more money, but at the expense of living lives of debt slavery and then having no work/life balance.
      Also EEA, not EU.

    • @chickensadist7554
      @chickensadist7554 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      "Yankeeland" graduates also have access to way higher level opportunities. When you go to a top university in America you're not paying just for the education but the connections and title.

    • @BuzziMuzzi
      @BuzziMuzzi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dmitrisnikioff Honestly, most white collar jobs get you an insurance. The people in the US who are fucked are the minimum wage workers. I don't agree with it, I think a truly healthy country has a healthy middle class, otherwise the economy is unsustainable. However, from a selfisj perspective, I put in 6 years of study at a top uni in Europe, but getting a top job in EU the salary is too low compared to living costs. Nowadays you need to pay 1,500 pounds for a room in London with entry level salary being 33k pounds a year BEFORE taxes! It's insane. You're from the EEA and sure, I bet it's organized quite nicely, but I am from NL myself, and in.a way similar to those countries, small, relatively well organized, but it's just so extremely boring. I can't live in NL anymore. I'm not trying to convince you, I'm just sharing my experiences. There is a certain benefit of getting education in the USA if you want to reach the absolute top of a global career. If you're satisfied in your country, then it's not worth it.

    Her comment about student loan highlights the danger. We can scream about "free market capitalism" vs "social safety net" and such, what we have in student loan is the worst of both worlds. Under normal circumstances, any money loaned out must be scrutinised. Yet, we have a government program that doesn't do that, creating this money circulation of educational institutions hopping on the train of easy loan ordained by the government, increase their prices as government hands out more money. At the same time, graduate students are forced to carry his huge burden that's inflated due to government's program AND "free market" force. Rather than directly fund schools like other countries, or loan only to important and lucrative fields like others, the U.S. government let big institutions to profit off, of education LOAN, not education itself. The best part about this, is that politicians love student loan because they can use it as political tool to get votes. They can cancel loans to gain emergency popularity, why reform such a useful system?

    Don't do student loans. They're devastating. Half of college enrollees fail out, and still have to pay them back. They're non bankruptable loans. Students who work their way through college have higher grades and higher graduation rates. And no debt.
