    This issue of range and whether or not you can tour with an electric (mine‘s a zero DSR) is really just a question of mindset. If you’re impatient and want to get as far as you can as quickly as you can, don‘t buy electric. Do you normally want to cover 400 miles in a day? Forget it. Personally, I don‘t really plan on more than 400km in a day, making my DSR a real world option.
    A second factor is whether you want to ride motorway or not. If I take the motorway, riding at 120kmh, I can usually manage 150km (90+ miles) on a charge. My preference is to stick to national roads (80kmh speed limit), which means I can usually manage 220-250km on a single charge. Stopping at 200km, charging the bike while I‘m having lunch, usually gives me a 400km range. Maybe the last 100km are assured by stopping for tea and a pee for the last leg of the journey, but as long as you’re not just sitting and watching the bike while it charges, it‘s all manageable.
    My DSR has a charge tank that charges up to 6-7 KWH on a 14KW battery. Do the maths, and that means 2 hours from empty to full. The Zero SR range charge in half that time. If Zero ever get their act together and go for DC charging, that time will drop even more dramatically. Of course it‘s not comparable to filling your tank with petrol, but the gap will narrow substantially in the coming years. Triumph claim 20 minutes charge to 80% on their new bike, although I have no idea about range.
    All in all, it‘s down to your own priorities. If you’re an impatient sod who only wants to ride on the motorway, stay with an ICE bike for touring. If you‘re not in a rush, and do a little bit of route planning in advance, these bikes are brilliant fun to ride and are only going to get more practical in the future.

      Exchanging batteries at service stations would possibly work for motorbikes, depending on how heavy the batteries are. Cars and vans would need a man with a forklift surely? They won't be like a smoke alarm battery after all 🤣

    The Livewire was built for the city, with a hundred miles range I would say it can do what it was built for. The average driver travels less than 50 miles a day . You also have to remember the livewire has better range than the HD 48 .

    Hay Moto Bob, love the channel!! Specifically you’re always first with the review of the new bikes👍.
    I can’t believe I’m going to comment about bike noise and cars hearing you on the motorway. I live in the states (please don’t hate me) and hear the Harley guys clatter about noise saving lives for years. I always thought they were high af,, but then the other day I was picking up my Ducati V4R from service. I usually p/u in the bed of my truck, but on this day I decided to ride it home... and man I have to tell you.. I almost got clobbered 3 times on the freeway back home. I do a fair amount of track days, but I have to tell you nothing was as dangerous as riding home on that Ducati lol. I don’t have the Akra on it so it’s very quiet, and the bike profile is smaller too. But man this never happens to me on my Harley Davidson Dyna. I’m not a moto journalist, however I do own quite a variety of bikes. Two Huskys- An FC 450 motocross’r , & FS 450 Super Moto. My Harley is ridiculously loud with its Bassani exhaust. I did ride the HD LiveWire for an 18 mile loop that’s it. But it gave me a general idea. Sorry I’m running off the rails here , let me get back to the point.. yes I believe now there is some truth to the Harley boys and the noise. I only uncorked mine to get more performance after doing the intake and exhaust I needed to correct fueling and timing. It was never my intention to piss off the neighbors with the noise of that HD. But man I do have to say I love it 😆
    Thank you for bringing us the great content for all of the world to see! We definitely appreciate it!!

    The model for eletronic cars is to rent/lease the car not to buy so big asking prices are not so hard to swallow. I recon this will be the future with electric motorcycles as well so big asking prices will become much more affordable monthly instalments. It will work especially with the news of the Big Four from Japan are all coming together to develop the swappable batery packs that will be standardised between all manufacturers. So charging will take less time cause it will be just a battery swap. So maybe there will be a place for electric motorcycles.

    • @pasiutrial

      Swappable batteries - yes. Electric motorcycle rental? I don't think so. Cars are very often just tools to get from point A to B for most of the people, whereas bikes are more individual, personal toys. I don't see the rental market growing for them.

    If I could afford 2 bikes, I would certainly get an electric. And I normally do not go more than 70 miles on a Sunday afternoon ride. But during those nice Spring and Fall days, I will easily go past 200 miles. Forget about touring. I watched the Long Way Up and was annoyed as the bulk for the series was about the limited range and constantly trying to figure out how to recharge, etc...

  • @caspianprince
    @caspianprince 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Being far too poor to afford a LiveWire but just rich enough to buy a used SR/F by selling both my ICE bikes, that's just what I did. I fretted for 2 years over the limited range but took the plunge anyway. The worst that can happen, I thought, is that I didn't like it or the range proved to be a colossal arse and I'd sell it after six months and lose a few grand, chalk it up to experience and buy a SuperDuke. However... it turns out that I was completely wrong about the range and how I thought I rode bikes. In over 1000 miles in the last 4 weeks, I've not once even had to use a public charger for the SR/F. It seems to do around 100 miles per charge doing my ordinary riding, or about 75 miles if I have to go on the motorway, but it turns out I almost never go anywhere on a motorway for any length of time. So my roving range has been around 45 miles from home on twisty little roads, which it turns out, takes me as far as I ever usually went before anyway (and both my biking buddies). Twice a year I do a long trip (North Wales, and Durham, from the South West)... and I'll be pinching my wife's CB500F to do that, which cost bugger all to buy. The rest of the time I waft around on a carpet of smugness and it costs me pence to ride anywhere. Added bonus is that it never needs a service and I don't have to oil the bastard chain. Never going back to petrol. Next bike will be electric and 50% more range though.

    • @motobob
      @motobob  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the real-world info CP! Useful to know. I have found the same when I've borrowed electrics - I stick to the local area and really enjoy it. Only with the SRS did I try to push it further because it's intended for touring to some extent, and it was a bit of a pain in the arse to sit in a Morrisons car park waiting for someone to do their shop to vacate the charger. But for the riding that you're describing, I agree there's less inconvenience than most skeptics (who usually haven't ridden one) would have you believe.

  • @philmarwood69
    @philmarwood69 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not the range or the imagined lack of chargers. It's about trip planning. You don't have to do it with a petrol bike but you really have to with an electric one. Ex-pat here and I looked online at the charging network in the UK and it seems like it's good enough.
    If I were there I'd be interested in one but the vast distances between cities here in Canada rule out an electric bike here.

  • @Heavywall70

    You’ll never recoup that price in fuel savings.
    The battery would be tired and useless before you saved that amount from not buying fuel.
    But always keep in mind, in the western world a Motorcycle of any kind is usually a luxury item, so buy bikes friends, lots of them , and ride them hither and yon and on and on!

    I don't think loud pipes so much save bikers lives . well not by much. A reasonable amount of engine noise from bikes or cars does warn pedestrians in town centres. Pedestrians a lot of the time still listen out for vehicles instead of looking. Yeah, they should look !

Inside the kriega was all the stuff I needed to camp - single man hiker’s tent, winter grade sleeping bag, stove, gas, pans, book, food etc. Frankly the Kriega wasn’t big enough so I ordered some Cortech Super 2.0 saddle bags that I think are going to work for the longer trips I have planned this spring and summer.

    • @patrickcrane1651
      @patrickcrane1651 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure thing - it’s lot like one of the other commenters described. It comes down to your point of view. If you want to see change happen, and you want to see progress against climate change, you have to make adjustments in how you do things. Having toured across the continental United States on an ICE bike, I can assure you from my electric touring experiment that riding coast to coast on a Livewire is going to be hard, even with level 3 DC fast charging. The charging infrastructure isn’t there (yet), you have go out of your way and double back a lot, and you have to stick to motorways more than you’d like, which is when you get the poorest range. So there are compromises all over the place. BUT, for me doing the extra planning is all part of the fun, and you can do a 300 mile day no problem if you’re prepared for a total time per day of 10 hours, including charging stops. Also, the instant torque after 3000+ miles just doesn’t get old. It’s a fantastic bike to own and ride, it starts conversations everywhere you go, and yes it’s bloody expensive but if you divert the $ you had for a high end road glide and buy one of these, you’re helping the industry get going, you’re helping bring prices down, get more competitors into the game and ultimately get bikes with better ranges and faster charge times. Just one person’s point of view, but it’s the future and for me it can’t happen fast enough.

    Who will buy this bike ? Eco hippie biker virtue signallers who have lots of cash. So a very small market !
    I don't think anyone will EVER get the money back on the lower cost of electricity as compared to petrol. The insurance on electric bikes is really high, then there's depreciation. Anyone thinking they're going to save money is seriously deluding themselves. As I said, this bike is for rich biker eco hippies. Along with the Zeros, Energica and probably the forthcoming Triumph.
    Even if I had £30K burning a hole in my pocket, I'd spend it on some other bikes. All petrol. Now if I had a few million pounds buring a hole in my pocket, a Jay Leno sized Garage, and I'm all petrol biked "out" , then yes I'd have a few electric bikes.
    I don't hate electric bikes, I just don't want to spend more money per mile, along with the large inconveniences, and all that weight. Until petrol bikes are banned, or made economically unviable, I'll be sticking the petrol bikes.
