This comment might be coming a bit late but I hope it helps with the Clematis debate, which is also a contested issue here in the UK. Clematis is a Latin word that originated from the Greek word klēmatis. As Latin, Greek and some languages with strong Latin and Greek roots only have 5 sounds for vowels you should pronounce the vowels as the are read. So a sounds a and not ei, e sounds e and not i (this is all a bit difficult to explain without actually speaking and not being a linguist myself I can’t find a better way of explaining it!). The tonic syllable falls on the first syllable CLE, so that should be where the emphasis should be made when pronounced. As for dahlias, they are named after botanist Anders Dahl, who was Swedish, I’d say the correct way to pronounce the name should be following the Swedish pronunciation of the surname. In the UK it’s pronounced dei-lee-uh and the American pronunciation I think is da-lee-uh which I think is the closest to the Swedish surname and to the Spanish pronunciation of Dalia. And I mentioned the Spanish pronunciation for two reasons: one - as you all know dahlias are native to Mexico and their national flower; second - the person who named them in honour of the Swedish botanist was Antonio José de Cavanilles, Spanish naturalist and the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Madrid. So I think the pronunciation should also be accurate to the language in which the name was given. This is all still very contested but as a Spanish speaker myself I call them Dalia or da-lee-uh despite of being in the UK, and I often get “corrected” for not speaking English properly 🤣

Hi Nicole, I just want to thank you for your generosity with your information, and I love your energy. I’m starting a tiny cut flower patch here in Western Australia and my learning curve is like a moon shot. I have to switch the info round for the Southern Hemisphere, but spring is coming and I’ll be out there planting soon! Here we say Day-lyuh and with an Aussie accent I guess clematis sounds like clem-aaatus. (How many times did I mutter that under my breath getting it right 😂)

Northern Michigan....I say dal-ya, but my daughter in law (1 mile away) says doll-ya.
"Dal (as in Dal-las) -yuh - slurred together for one bloom; Dal-e-ahs -slurred together for more than one bloom or plant. My pet peeve is Ma-dam Butterfly instead of Mah-dum. Said like a Butler would, not like cursing a butterfly🤣 Love our regional flower talk!
Detroit, Michigan and I say Daaahl ya and Clematis the same as you. I’ve heard in UK they say Clem i tis maybe, was definitely different.

I planted lily bulbs in the center of pots last summer for our nursery and a lot came up *not* in the center 🤣. Enjoyed this video! I'm from CT and pronounce dahlia the same as you but I pronounce clematis that other crazy way 😂.

Dumb question - do you have a greenhouse, or do you simply go from basement to acclimating outdoors? Also, did you do soil plugs for those snaps (looks like it) or was that just dirt taken out and put on a plate? It's my first year and I have no idea how to grow snaps but I'm excited to try! I dont know if you have peony’s, but I would love a video on the harvest and post harvest care, I keep reading you can keep cut peony’s in the marshmallow stage for a month but have never seen it done. Keep up the great work!

@Flower Hill Farm yeah Nicole , just ordered a bunch of lilies , wondering how close would you plant them in a high density bed? They recommend 12" or so but would you think 6" is pushing it too much, also wondering , you said that you succession plant your lilies, do you dig them in fall and store them for spring?, if so how do you store them to get there chill hours in. I am confused and need to com up with a plan to extend my season. Thank you for all you do.

I really must get to grips with this succession planting, we grow on a very small scale by comparison, this is our 3rd season of what started as a bit of a fun hobby for our own cutting patch, we now have 2 allotments full of blooms, one annuals, the other perennials. It’s now a hobby that is rapidly getting out of control, but my daughter and I love it.
We need to succession plant, and we also need to nip out the tips of snaps, something I have learned from your channel. We learn as we go! How are the David Austin roses doing?

The roses had a bit of a setback but they are bouncing back nicely. I ended up with spider mites. I'm starting filming a video about them and will have one done soon! I do use Chrysal flower food, but nothing else quite yet for the cuts. I'm not sure I'll be selling cut roses, as my florist can get that cheaply. I planted those for me 🥰🌹 Thanks for watching and happy growing! It's addicting, isn't it?

I’ve been looking at the Chrysal plant food, wondering if it makes a difference, at the moment we just use white vinegar and sometimes a little sugar. I need to do more research, but thanks for that.

Dahlia like Dollya. Kinda. There are many big dahlia growers and much competition across the pond. The English need lessons on speaking our language! They are big on day lias. I think many Americans hear about the English, and respect their flower work, and pick up their pronunciation. Sadly. We are right on this side of the Atlantic! LOL Just my 2 cents. I need to remember to get my glads all in by 7 15. I planted some that never bloomed last year, but was not very smart about it. I appreciate your knowledge, and your willingness to say you don't know it all. Life is ALL about learning. Any day I do not learn something new is a wasted day!

How wide is the flower netting? It looks like your multi rows may be wider than the netting unless you don't use it for that type of flower.
Dolly-uh. They’re native to Mexico. If you think about Spanish, there’s no long or short a, as in lake or ant.

Hey Nicole, quick question for you. I've been going back and binge watching your videos. I ordered lilies from eden brothers and I noticed they are listed under fall planted perennial bulbs. So, do you plant any in the fall to overwinter or do you just start planting them in very early spring? I know we're in completely different zones, but I was just curious how the succession planting of lilies works. I'm in zone 7 in western North Carolina. Thank you! I just love your videos.
So you can treat them as annuals in order to succession plant. If you fall plant them all they will all bloom at a similar time. If I left the ones in the ground from this year they will all bloom together. Not sure if this answers your questions but using fresh bulbs every spring is the best and easiest way to succession plant to blooms all season long.

😂 no it’s on Main Street. Pretty quiet. We get as cold as -30 but that’s abnormal and doesn’t happen often. Right now it was 34 today and looks about the same the next couple weeks with lows in the teens. It’s a huge snowmobile country!

Oh gosh, so many! Dianthus, stock, phlox, dahlia, sunflowers, feverfew, bachelor buttons, cress, lupine, peony, cosmos, snapdragons, lisianthus, basil, dill, foxglove, iris, lily, gladiolus...and MORE!
Cool Flowers is very much a market here. So I started their cultivation of cut Flower. This is done in the greenhouse. Only the tulips and gladiolus the plant do .
Growing tulip in this is a lot of effort. This can be done in our weather in November. tulip how many days to get flowers ?
another question I was going to ask too, what would be more used and profitable Snapdragons or Gladiolus?

I'm going to look into doing CSA, since I'm going to be trying to sell fruits, vegetables, & cut-flowers this year. I live in the country, but on a busy road, so I'm going to attempt to set up a market like stand at my house to sell them, but I'd also like to do the csa.
You plant from that tiny plug size direct into the ground!? Do you plant everything from seed that size (two sets of true leaves) into the ground without potting up at all? Been thinking of investing in one of the soil blockers. Ive mostly done veg and herbs, last year was my first for flowers.
For many things yes. I even started tomatoes in them (but potted those up)

As for the pronunciation, it depends on how much the customer is willing to spend 😂
😂 they produce one stem but will produce again the following year if the foliage is allowed to die back naturally. In colder zones like where I live- I have to lift the corms and store indoors for the winter.

Check your dictionary, which has in parenthesis the pronunciation of the word. Long vowel, straight line and short vowel is a wiggle worm over. Long vowel is the actual vowel name, A is A. Short vowel sound are not and do not sound like the vowel name but are short version. So to uncover actual vowel sounds, choose an example, like apple a or ah. so on. You'll figure it out and adapt if you are still uncomfortable.
DAHL-ee-uh and clem-AT-is. I don't think it's regional. I learned from my grandma who was from the south and we moved back and a bunch of my customers pronounce clematis CLEMA-tis and dahlia DAYL-yah.
Love your channel but just noticed you don’t have an Instagram page. Why? If people know what you mean in whatever way you pronounce it, that’s all that matters. If someone happens to act like a #%*?! over something essentially inconsequential like that, thank them for revealing their character to you. I’m someone who makes the effort to know proper pronunciation as well, but I’ve seen personal attacks from grammar Nazis and I think it’s low frequency.
Never heard the weird clematis way of speaking. I say dahl-yah. I argue with my partner over that though so really 🤷♀️ its both. 😆

I'm from MN and say dah-lea 😁. I also say, clematis like you but hear others call it Klem-ma-tiss sounds so strange! Lol
I would think that since you are up in the northeastern part of the US you should pronounce dahlias as dauhlyas. If you were from the southeastern US the h would be silent and it would be pronounced more like daalyas. This is based on observations rather than any documented grammatical rules.😀
