  • I'll show you how to service your 4L60E found in most Chevy Astro/GMC Safari: drain the ATF, change the filter, and install a drain plug into your existing pan. This allows you to change the ATF in your transmission more completely, as just draining the pan doesn't get all of it. Please leave a comment if this helped you out, cheers!

    no issues with my transmission on my 02 Astro. 268k miles. I've done a lot of maintenance, but transmission filter and fluid hasn't been one of them. I was always told that of the transmission has no issues don't change the fluid. With my recent inspection at a shop for registration they said the fluid was dark and I would most likely need a transmission soon. Doesn't make sense to me as I've had zero issues with shifting. No hard shifts or anything. Just smooth and quiet. Anyways I ordered the filter for the deep pan which is what's currently on it. I went ahead and paid the money for the new pan with the drain plug. Thanks for the tips, links and videos!

      Good luck. Make sure you use the correct fluid. Service interval is 30-50k for fluid changes.

    Thanks for this video! You could have shown installing the new seal and filter…
    Make sure all of your Astro videos are in the Badastro playlist.

    I'll be filing this one away, I have a pair of HS8's that I'm going to fit on my '73 project as soon as I get a manifold from across the pond. I will have to get different needles, maybe different springs as they are spares for my Rover P6 2 liter.

      @@ADDvanced What the hell happened? I didn't do that on purpose I can assure you. I'll try to sort it out and find the proper video. I rewatched the vid I thought I commented on and wondered why my comment wasn't there, this is jacked.

      @@mescko TH-cam gets screwed up sometimes. I had a video that was live for a day, and then after that first day it froze half way through. Had to reupload, even though it was fine for a day. Whatev. lol

    Nice Van. Can you switch a shallow pan for a deep pan? I'm guessing that more fluid is better.

    I have an '84 K5 Blazer with a 700R4 trans. The first time I did the trans filter that same seal got stuck in there. I assumed it was going to be a real bitch but I got super lucky and the second I tried to get a tool in there it rotated 90 degrees to the hole and I was able to hook it with a pick. But I was really sweating it when I first realized that thing was up in there.

      @addvancedgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, basically what I did. Just get it to rotate enough to use a 90 deg pick

    Leave it to GM to not put a drain plug in the trans pan. Definitely idiotic indeed. You are correct about the torque converter holding the fluid too and thats the only way to safely cycle through all the fluid so you can get the most amount of clean ATF in there. Itll probably take you at least three times of adding clean fluid to have it be mostly all fresh. If you do a regular 'flush,' you run the risk of possibly stirring up some sediment, dirt or whatever contaminates. Thats why doing the way you are is always the safest bet in an autotragic. Good job adding the drain. Really dumb it wasn't there in the first place.

      Right? So dumb! And flushing transmissions is a bad idea, like you said. Best way is to just drain and fill on a regular basis. Stick to the factory interval for the filter/dropping the pan, and keep the ATF fresh. Cheers!

      @@addvancedgarage Absolutely bro, you hit the nail on the head. Turning wrenches for around 25 years so far, and I've found this method to be the best, for the least chance of failure. Valve bodies are very sensitive to contamination as you know so this way keeps that problem to a minimum. Nice job fixing what G.M. aka General MALFUNCTION should've done from the jump. 🤔😆👍

      Ah, the good old days when there were drain plugs on transmission pans and...even on torque converters. Pepper Farm remembers!

    Not much fluid came out of that pan when draining

    • @addvancedgarage
      @addvancedgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tipped it to drain some of it but it was still full when I lowered it. Maybe it's not showing in the video, either way my fluid levels and trans are working fine, and I want to keep it that way.
