I grew up around there. Just off Homerton High Street and my school was just on the other side of Mabley Green. Very nostalgic for me, the feeling heightened by your choice of music. Terrific video. Thanks. Cheers
Thanks for some great films this year John! I've only recently got really into watching your videos after looking for stuff about Iain Sinclair. I must say that I instantly felt at ease and immersed in your down to earth and uncomplicated, yet incredibly fact laden style. I got one of your books for Christmas so that should carry me through the new year. Hope you have a great one too!
Brilliant John Rogers! I'm racing through this one so it won't be too long before I'm ready for the next one. I wish there was a few more psychogeography rain in Manchester but alas the scene is either really underground or has petered out. Still, even though I only lived in London for a few months a decade ago your videos really bring the landscape to life for me! I eagerly await the next installments!
PS. Loved the way you played with the music and editing in this one John. Winter/Summer and back to the Winter. Captured the mood brilliantly and very funny. Thanks. Dave
I always wondered why they used to cover up streams in parks?! A park near me used to be a few Sunday league football pitches but they've now uncovered the stream that runs through it and made It a mini nature reserve. It's so much better.
Yes it's great when they bring them back to the surface- there have been a few campaigns to unearth lost rivers but a lot of the time they get forgotten- like the Philly Brook
I feel like I have been for a brisk walk! And yet when I first watched this (11:20 am) I was still in bed. However, I am now going for a walk. Inspirational! Happy New Year to you John and the family. ( will be in touch soon).
Great video john the new flats in Dunedin Rd use to be the site of the old ruckholt school .in 1977 i was in goal for George mitchell we played them on ive farm and it ended 7-7 .what a game and love the mention of Leyton orient .thats important mate .
Wonderful video John! It's great that these traditions like the singing to the fruit trees persist to this day. There's a nice little 21st Century Brueghel painting going on here. A very Happy New Year to you!
Thanks very much Renfro, I think not only are the Tree Musketeers out there again this year but it's spread around the surrounding area. Hope you have a great New Year
Ruckholt Manor School (my old school) was on the site of the car showrooms. Now it's flats. Next to the flats was and still is an alleyway. Then wasteground where horses were kept and I believe there was a gypsy caravan. Then over the back allotments. Next to the wasteground was Temple Mills shunting yard. I used to work there for a while till it closed. Next to that is Hackney Marshes. Now part of the marshes has been allowed to go wild. Where the river Lea has been reduced to a stream, where you could almost walk from one side to another. It looks absolutely dreadful. When I was a kid in the 60s it looked wonderful. Opposite the marshes was Eton Manor sports ground. I lived there for a while. Now it's the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park. Anybody being dropped there now blindfolded who hasn't been there since the 60s wouldn't have the faintest clue where they were, it's almost unrecognisable from 50 yrs ago ☹️ I recently made my own film about how it looked before the QE Park was there.
Could watch this again and again - you shoot with sympathy but with a bit of a raised eyebrow too - like it. Keep it going for 2017 and happy new year to you. Jez Price.
Just discovered your Videos John and absolutely LOVE them! Can't wait to get to London my favorite City (live in The States). Was wondering...At the end of your "Midwinter Walk Through Leyton" Video you show women singing "Waissaling" and mention a "Christmas Walk"... was there a specific video for that?
Very sad to see how Leyton has gone in terms of development and roads . I remember coronation gardens in the 70’s , much nicer , you got told off for walking on the grass , it had a fish pond , and across the road was another park with swings and an old metal giant shed . Sunday mornings in the mid seventies Hackney marshes watching the trains shunt the wagons in temple mills east . Under Hackney marshes apparently is a load of buried shrapnel and WW2 German shot down planes that got dumped there after the war that landed locally during the blitz. Then it was filled in .,

Nice to see where I grew up, it brought back lots of memories. My parents had a Newsagents opposite Hackney hospital and I lived there until I was 24.
Lovely shots of the bandstand in the cold dusk.

There’s more development on the way too. I heard the same thing about the Blitz rubble buried beneath Marsh Lane Fields
I worked in the marshalling yard from 1977 till it closed in 84.
So many generic apartment blocks going up with no consideration to the existing buildings or general fung shui
