      The libtard tree huggers with a stranglehold on CA forestry politics don't allow this type of work to be done. Hence outrageous forest fires. Up here in Idaho the forestry department is proactive and do manageable mulching which minimizes the severity of fires. Apples and oranges. Your vote counts!

    I worked beside a "I'm told" 600HP mulcher for almost a week. The most AWESOME and scariest machine I have every been around. That machine went thru over 100 gallons of diesel in less than eight hours and would go thru a two foot diameter tree in seconds. Don't remember the name of the machine but I will never forget the operators name, call me a liar all you want but the operators last name was Munch.

    • @LatitudeSky
      @LatitudeSky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @Bruce Davies These are usually trees not worth harvesting. If they don't get mulched, they would get cut down and dragged to a chipper, or just piled up and burned. Mulching in place keeps the nutrients in place and lets it decompose back into the soil it grew from.

    • @boydjobe1324

    That's some machine! The last time I saw anything like this in terms of size and power was when I worked as a refuse worker down at the tip where we unloaded the trucks, all of our compacted general waste would be shredded through huge mulching machines before being loaded into huge trailer trucks to be taken elsewhere for incineration or whatever it is they do with it now. Was quite extraordinary to see, and smell...

    Just a tip, but as a retired machinist of 45 years experience, when carbide tool bits first burst on the scene we had to re-sharpen them ourselves. I'd remove a couple and take them to your nearest tooling sharpening place and see what they can do with them. Buying one set to swap out while the other is being sharpened might save you some major outlay.
    If it were me; I'd buy a good 8" bench grinder and a couple of Green wheels and have at it by hand. It's not like the relief angles have to be exact for those.

    • @samkaufman5232
      @samkaufman5232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't sharpen carbides anyone. Just run them until they are done. I believe this model also has reversible carbides.

    • @paulthesoundguy1
      @paulthesoundguy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do need to sharpen them…the drum will rotate easier if all the teeth have the same profile shape.

    • @brustar5152
      @brustar5152 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samkaufman5232 Perhaps you don't, but I can assure you others of us have and do sharpen them. It ain't rocket science for a certified machinist to put an edge back on those large teeth as the profile is contained in the back rake of the tooth so you simply sharpen the face and you're done. Have done many smaller towable limb/tree stationary mulchers along with stump grinders for local guys. Better yet, buy an 8" pedestal grinder, equip it with a set of carbide wheels (green) and spend some time learning the process (20 minutes tops) yourself and sharpen them during your winter down time. Once taught, a high school student could do the job for you.

I’m imagining they need to charge “at least” $500 an hour, can he mulch the same 3 acres in 8 hours = $4000. You won’t get the ability to subsoil, but it doesn’t look like they’re going deep on this project. For small acreage, does it make sense to hire a machine that large? It is a nasty beast, I’d love to run it a couple hours.

      If this device shreds below ground level-there should be no stumps left-just mulch!

    I get so jealous watching these types of videos. The last 2 years spring fall and summer I have been clearing my parents back property that has been growing for 25yrs by my lonesome. Weed eater with blade a chainsaw and truck and me I've cleared a lot but still have a lot to go. I had to take down about 150 yards of fence that was covered with poison ivy with vines 2 inches thick running the length of the fence running in and out of the fence holes so that was great. It keeps me busy but I would love to have that thing for 4 or 5 days

    Would it make more sense to make paper out of it or something than just burn it or just put it into the ground?

    I rented a Prime Tech PT300 which looks similar to the Raptor... $25k for a week but worth it. I don’t know about the Raptor but the PT300 mulched, subsoiled and pulverized small rock. For an all in one land clearing machine these are just awesome.

      How many acres could you clear in a week?

    • @zfilmmaker
      @zfilmmaker 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ depends, some days I was in light stuff like cedars and autumn olive which are soft wood junk trees that the PT ripped through fast. Hardwoods take longer and really depends on diameter of trunks. What took the most time was subsoiling the roots and rock which takes more time. I have since rented it a few more times but always could use another week. This is for my farm so I’m not getting reimbursement right away. I own a Case TV620 with FAE head which is good for small jobs only, the big difference is how fast you can feed and process… the Prime Tech tool carriers and mulch heads are 1000x faster and more powerful. If you have large acreage to clear, you’re not going to do it as fast with a CTL. Plus you can’t till out the root balls. I’ve done it both ways, cleared with a CTL and mulch head and a year later when it all regrows, go over it all with my boom sprayer. It’s extra work and expensive which is better spent on the PT300 cause I can till out the roots at the same time and be done. There are disadvantages, if you have lots of cedar, avoid mulching cause they will lower your soil acidly to astonishing high levels. It will take years of liming to correct. For that, your best bet is to dig them out with an excavator. This doesn’t answer your question cause it changes due to what your mulching. Based on straight clearing and not tilling, I would estimate 25-30 acres for soft wood and 18-25 hardwood. Those are experienced operator numbers, if your not then those numbers are less than half. If you till out the roots those numbers drop significantly too.
