I was a 10 year old girl in 1999. I loved wwf back then not even particularly for the actual wrestling I loved the drama. It felt like a really cheesy soap opera every week and I lived for it. I also love how practically everyone was a star. All the wrestlers were over and loved by fans not just the main eventers. Any wrestler could be your favourite because they all had something interesting and entertaining going on

The Attitude Era was the core of WWE. It was, no pun intended, raw, gritty and grounded in “reality”. Now, WWE is polished, sporty and somewhat, as JR would say, has gone corporate.
The rise and subsequent dominance of political correctness throughout America in the last 25 years certainly hasn't helped. God forbid somebody gets offended in a free country. Remember all the crying people did after the Brian Pillman gun incident? And that was in 1997!! No way you could get away with that today or anything else that made the Attitude Era worth watching. No middle fingers or beer drinking. No references to smoking or drugs. No swearing. No improvisation. No originality or pushing the proverbial envelope. It doesn't matter how good the athleticism is today. People have completely lost the emotional attachment they once had with the talent all those years ago. There's nothing to relate to any longer, it's not funny or entertaining anymore, nothing is believable or inspiring and everything is so heavily scripted right down to the word pronunciations that it's IMPOSSIBLE to suspend disbelief. The entire roster now just blends together and nobody really stands out. And the entrance themes are all terrible, too, just like music in general eventually became. Why isn't Jim Johnston in the Hall of Fame yet?

One of the best things about the era, the camera flashes! Watch any big moment, slam or entrance and the flashes make the moment look a thousand times cooler and really sells the 'big sporting event/concert' feel
You have crazy timing on this, because I am at the March 20, 2000 RAW right now, after starting at the beginning of 1995 and watching it All... The best part for me is getting to see all the PPV's that teenage me couldnt afford. Also, its really interesting seeing it with my adult eyes and brain... Its ALL on Peacock, people. The worst part is seeing how much better and more free the world was back then compared to now.
Undertaker and Mick Foley also did not wrestle much in 2000. Thus, Kurt Angle quickly rose to the main event to break up the repetitiveness of Rock vs Triple H.
I stayed up until 4am to watch Summerslam 98. There was no school for me that day as it was a bank holiday Monday. I was 14 back then so remember this time very well. This was the first event to switch to 8pm ET so was 1am to 4 job in England. The best time for wrestling. No 26,000 near falls, no constant gymnastics just mostly interesting characters having fairly serious fights. There was the odd bit of total stupidity here and there that was bad even then but it’s a masterpiece every week compared to now where there is very few things that are actually good.
The biggest paradox of Wrestling is that the most boring thing about Wrestling is Wrestling. Attitude Era love it or hate it is the proof of exactly that. I can rewatch the Monday Night Wars over and over again and enjoy both WWE and WCW. I can't sit through most weeks watching WWE or AEW (before the Sami/Uso segment).
They cared about the product, other wrestlers, and how they were presented. Its alot more limited now and especially with WWE but also AEW and the others it definetly feels like management cares more about stability and the wrestlers care more about the pay than trying new things and pushing ratings.
I'm watching the attitude era right now (Raw, Smackdown & PPVs) and the uptick in quality is so apparent from the second Vince Russo leaves it's crazy he wasn't fired months earlier. Honestly I watched 1997 and 1998 in a matter of months and 1999 has taken me longer than the year it originally took to show it the first time around!
That Val Venis/Kaientai story had some cool plot twists. Taka Michinoku betraying Val for sleeping with his sister is one of the greatest heel turns of that era. And yes, HHH's DX was the best version of the group, especially when he became champion and merged them with the MHR. EVERYONE had gold, even Stephanie.
Ah, the McMahon-Helmsey Faction Consortium. Steph's Heel Turn was legit one of the best EVER. Nowadays, we'd see that coming a mile away, but back then it was a shock.
I think we're missing the over mid card acts now, that prop up the company and can enter good feuds. Talent like Ken Shamrock, big boss man, rikishi, test, d lo brown, hurricane etc. These guys fleshed out the wwe at the time and help put over the megastars. Its like about 6 huge stars now and no else is over, or allowed to get over.
Absolutely! Late 90s (and early 00s) Raw was held together by a strong, well-booked midcard. We can’t overstate the importance of this given that 95% of *all* wrestling shows are the midcard guys.
Nah the first DX was boring & was basically for Shawn Michaels success! The second one had one of the best tag teams of all time & x Pac made you hate or love him & they made the attitude era better 💯
If you go back and watch the episode of Raw in the pre-attitude times, there was an angle where Jerry lawyer was taunting ECW, for weeks. At one point he tells fans to show up with their signs to show support for the (then) WWF. Literally, the very next week was an arena full of signs and it was like that for years before you could actually see faces in the crowd. It was nuts!!
The WWF Commissionership was never the joke that TNA's on-screen authority structure later became, with Hogan, Bischoff, Dixie Carter and Jeff Jarrett all having match-making abilities at the same time, sometimes overruling each other, sometimes not...
I know back in the day they would kick you out if you held your signs up during a match but since 90% of the show was promos you are absolutely right here

WWE wanted to pen a deal with Mexico broadcasts for their shows and PPV events back in 2004. That's partly why Eddie was made champ. Diversity champion. Plus the wave of popularity, but there were a number of others who could have filled the spot. After Eddie's unfortunate passing, the deal got delayed and WWE still gave an honorary run to Rey Misterio. WWE then re-negotiated in 2008 for the Mexican broadcast rights. Eddie was great at what he did, but there's a reason why you don't see people like Santino Marella, Chad Gable, or Zack Ryder as heavyweight champion. It's all about how WWE can twist business deals. Like making Great Khali champion for the Indian market.
Really shows the contrast between past and present. Attitude Era was good because the performers were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Nowadays, Vince micromanages every promo. I see what Triple H was going for when he got to be in charge. He showed that the industry could evolve but keep the original heart that made it a household name.
I've learned two things from binge watching the Attitude Era: The first is I realize I'm more of a work-rate wrestling fan (I'm not criticizing anyone who isn't). I started watching wrestling in 1990 and gravitated toward Bret Hart (I'm Canadian and I love the stories his matches told in the ring). The second reason is it's not as good as I remember, as I was a between the ages of 10-15 in that time period, I feel like what I enjoyed about the Attitude Era back then was what I also enjoyed wen I listened to Limp Bizkit. Both were funny as a kid/teenager, but as an adult, for me at least they both aged terribly.
I'm the same way. I love the Attitude Era for what it was and it's when I got into wrestling, but I'll just go ahead and say it - The Ruthless Aggression Era was better.
Saying it "wasnt as good as you remember" and that it "aged terribly" are too different things that shouldn't be linked together. You can't compare it to what we have now. You must compare it to what we had back then, and it was every bit as fantastic in that Era. It's like how Bart Simpson was considered controversial back in the late 80s and early 90s for saying "damn" and "dont have a cow", but since him we had Stewie Griffin, who would try to kill his own mom repeatedly, and Eric Cartman, who once killed a kid's parents, made them into chili, and then fed them to him lol It doesn't mean that Bart was suddenly "lame" looking back, but we can just acknowledge it was a different time.

Some aspects of the Attitude Era have aged terribly (Mae Young giving birth to a hand, Choppy choppy your pee pee, etc). while other things like DX's antics and the matches from RAW and Smackdown were not as good as I remember upon a rewatch. I'm currently following a retrospective series that compares Nitro and RAW here on TH-cam and a lot of the content can fall into one of these categories, so while "age terribly and "not as good as you remember" are two different things I can certianly use both.
WWE was really only 1/3 of the attitude era. I know they coined the phrase attitude era but the other 2 major companies also had a big part in it too. WWE was where you went for storylines. WCW was where you went for lighter weight guys and ECW was where you went for more adult themed content. All in all the attitude era was great, there was a bit of something for everyone. Obviously after Vince merged all 3 companies and monopolized the business there was a steep decline in quality but that's to be expected as competition drives quality.
The thing back then is it was a PPV model. The weekly shows were there to drum up interest for the big events. Obviously they werent gonna put epic bangers on. Plus the roster was so deep and they only had 2 hours a week to fill, so theybjad to cram as much in as possible. Its not like now where you get 30+ minutes of pointless promos at the start of every show.
Everyone felt unique whether It was The Rock says know your role, Mankinds mask, Kane's mask, Undertaker's lights or kaientai "INDEED" Where as now we have about 50 wrestlers with nothing special to set them apart
The only reason you care about “5star matches” and “great wrestling” is because you can’t find a good storyline these days Back then we didn’t care at all about matches being finished or good quality, it was all STORYLINE
One thing i also realized too was that Undertaker's revamp to the biker gimmick was needed and unavoidable. Some fans dislike the look and think it was a mistake that should have never happened but looking at his deadman persona by 1999 it had reached its imaginable limit as he was basically being a witchcraft master. But beyond that there was really nothing for it to evolve to and after 9 years this was making the persona look stale and stuck in the past compared to other characters. Getting the biker gimmick not only allowed Mark Callaway to be more himself but also gave the undertaker a new direction and possibilities to stay relevant. At the same time too it also gave the deadman image the break that it needed. Once the biker persona ran its course and the deadman returned in 2004 it felt fresh and rejuvenated thus i believe had the change not being made in 2000 the undertaker would have found it harder to remain in the picture especially going to the Ruthless Aggression era and beyond.

I'm currently binge watching WWE toothless aggression...I mean.. Ruthless Aggression Era. Several months ago I decided I wanted to watch old school WWE, so I started watching in 1998 with the first appearance/match of Kane. From there I watched every Raw and PPV for that month, and then added SmackDown when that started. I'm still watching it, and I'm at December 2004 right now, and still enjoying it. I actually stopped watching wrestling back in 2004 when they did the Kane/Lita story with the wedding and pregnancy. I didn't like that story at the time, and was also pissed that both Hardy Boyz were now gone. They were the reason I started watching wrestling back in 2000. So I'm curious to see everything I didn't watch back then. Oh, and I still think that whole Kane Lita story is stupid lol. It's just not enough to make me stop this time.
I think my generation (myself included) looks back on the Ruthless Aggression Era with rose tinted lenses. For every Texas Bullrope match there was a Hornswoggle winning the cruiserweight title.

as an 18 year old now that i’ve binge watched all raw, smackdowns, and ppvs from 1998 to early 2002. i can say the attitude era was good but not all it was hyped up to be. maybe it was because i had seen all of the key moments from other wwe shows but it just seems like a complete alternate universe
You had to be there. 2 wrestling companies competing for ratings. The talent got better, the ratings were higher, Monday nights were the best part of the week. Plus the rise of hardcore wrestling through ECW really trickled into each just a bit and then it became a huge tsunami that dominated the business.
I agree you definitely had to be there. The shows on the network are slightly censored also for content and music. Watching Raw and Nitro was also big part of that time. Wrestling actually being popular made it all feel bigger too.
Smack Down didn't dilute raw it gave fans like myself who couldn't afford cable an opportunity to be fans we knew what happened on raw more or less because of smackdown ill forever be grateful for it because without it i would've lost interest and never woulda gotten to experience some good times
Yea man 5 star matches don’t really mean much when the characters or fighters having the matches are lackluster, it’s sports entertainment the storyline and the build up and plot and promos are a good 85% of it and is what’s most notably remembered the dqs or the stuff that happened after the match. the in ring stuff is usually reliant on crowd reaction and commentating superstars are goofy nowadays it’s like seeing the kids you grew up with watching all the real wrestlers wrestling now and it’s kinda off putting to say the least

I disagree with the idea that Smackdown diluted Raw storylines. If anything, it brought them to a wider audience because Smackdown was on UPN which you could get without cable. That right there is why I became a WWF fan, because I literally couldn't watch WCW even if I wanted to.

One thing I've learned is that Triple H really wasn't that good. I mean, he was an ok wrestler, but the other Attitude era main eventers were waaay better. HHH didn't have the Rock's looks and charisma, Stone Cold's personality, Kane's strength, Undertaker's agility, Kurt Angle's technicality or Mankind's stunt work.
Triple H didn't get good until around 2000, and that's because he had great Faces to work with. Not to say that he was bad, because he wasn't, but he wasn't what the WWE tries to say that he was.

People with laser pointers were really bad back then as well, especially on WCW shows but I do remember it happening on Raw as well.
Stone Cold was essential to getting the Attitude era to its zenith, but by 2000 The Rock and others could carry the show in his absence. Consistent quality and multiple stars over hoping that one guy will always be around to draw, well imagine that.

I went to multiple Raws in from 1998-2003 & people would put them down during matches or in ring promos.. it was only during the times the cameras were panning the crowd
I was in many an attitude era crowds never had issues watching the shows.
I definitely agree that the second version of DX was best. It really brought Triple H to the next level. He was now a leader and no longer a sidekick.

WWE wanted to pen a deal with Mexico broadcasts for their shows and PPV events back in 2004.
That's partly why Eddie was made champ. Diversity champion. Plus the wave of popularity, but there were a number of others who could have filled the spot.
After Eddie's unfortunate passing, the deal got delayed and WWE still gave an honorary run to Rey Misterio.
WWE then re-negotiated in 2008 for the Mexican broadcast rights.
Eddie was great at what he did, but there's a reason why you don't see people like Santino Marella, Chad Gable, or Zack Ryder as heavyweight champion.
It's all about how WWE can twist business deals. Like making Great Khali champion for the Indian market.

Really shows the contrast between past and present. Attitude Era was good because the performers were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Nowadays, Vince micromanages every promo. I see what Triple H was going for when he got to be in charge. He showed that the industry could evolve but keep the original heart that made it a household name.
I remember watching and liking what I was seeing, but I also remember legit waiting for stonecold to come back.
I've learned two things from binge watching the Attitude Era: The first is I realize I'm more of a work-rate wrestling fan (I'm not criticizing anyone who isn't). I started watching wrestling in 1990 and gravitated toward Bret Hart (I'm Canadian and I love the stories his matches told in the ring). The second reason is it's not as good as I remember, as I was a between the ages of 10-15 in that time period, I feel like what I enjoyed about the Attitude Era back then was what I also enjoyed wen I listened to Limp Bizkit. Both were funny as a kid/teenager, but as an adult, for me at least they both aged terribly.
I'm the same way. I love the Attitude Era for what it was and it's when I got into wrestling, but I'll just go ahead and say it - The Ruthless Aggression Era was better.
Saying it "wasnt as good as you remember" and that it "aged terribly" are too different things that shouldn't be linked together. You can't compare it to what we have now. You must compare it to what we had back then, and it was every bit as fantastic in that Era. It's like how Bart Simpson was considered controversial back in the late 80s and early 90s for saying "damn" and "dont have a cow", but since him we had Stewie Griffin, who would try to kill his own mom repeatedly, and Eric Cartman, who once killed a kid's parents, made them into chili, and then fed them to him lol It doesn't mean that Bart was suddenly "lame" looking back, but we can just acknowledge it was a different time.

Some aspects of the Attitude Era have aged terribly (Mae Young giving birth to a hand, Choppy choppy your pee pee, etc). while other things like DX's antics and the matches from RAW and Smackdown were not as good as I remember upon a rewatch. I'm currently following a retrospective series that compares Nitro and RAW here on TH-cam and a lot of the content can fall into one of these categories, so while "age terribly and "not as good as you remember" are two different things I can certianly use both.
WWE was really only 1/3 of the attitude era. I know they coined the phrase attitude era but the other 2 major companies also had a big part in it too. WWE was where you went for storylines. WCW was where you went for lighter weight guys and ECW was where you went for more adult themed content. All in all the attitude era was great, there was a bit of something for everyone. Obviously after Vince merged all 3 companies and monopolized the business there was a steep decline in quality but that's to be expected as competition drives quality.
There wasn't right away though. 2001 thru until about 2005 was fantastic. Arguably some of the best years in the business tbh.

The thing back then is it was a PPV model. The weekly shows were there to drum up interest for the big events. Obviously they werent gonna put epic bangers on. Plus the roster was so deep and they only had 2 hours a week to fill, so theybjad to cram as much in as possible. Its not like now where you get 30+ minutes of pointless promos at the start of every show.
Everyone felt unique
whether It was The Rock says know your role, Mankinds mask, Kane's mask, Undertaker's lights or kaientai "INDEED"
Where as now we have about 50 wrestlers with nothing special to set them apart

One thing i also realized too was that Undertaker's revamp to the biker gimmick was needed and unavoidable.
Some fans dislike the look and think it was a mistake that should have never happened but looking at his deadman persona by 1999 it had reached its imaginable limit as he was basically being a witchcraft master. But beyond that there was really nothing for it to evolve to and after 9 years this was making the persona look stale and stuck in the past compared to other characters.
Getting the biker gimmick not only allowed Mark Callaway to be more himself but also gave the undertaker a new direction and possibilities to stay relevant. At the same time too it also gave the deadman image the break that it needed. Once the biker persona ran its course and the deadman returned in 2004 it felt fresh and rejuvenated thus i believe had the change not being made in 2000 the undertaker would have found it harder to remain in the picture especially going to the Ruthless Aggression era and beyond.
As someone who went to Raw and Smackdown back then, the signs never got in my way.

I'm currently binge watching WWE toothless aggression...I mean.. Ruthless Aggression Era. Several months ago I decided I wanted to watch old school WWE, so I started watching in 1998 with the first appearance/match of Kane. From there I watched every Raw and PPV for that month, and then added SmackDown when that started. I'm still watching it, and I'm at December 2004 right now, and still enjoying it. I actually stopped watching wrestling back in 2004 when they did the Kane/Lita story with the wedding and pregnancy. I didn't like that story at the time, and was also pissed that both Hardy Boyz were now gone. They were the reason I started watching wrestling back in 2000. So I'm curious to see everything I didn't watch back then. Oh, and I still think that whole Kane Lita story is stupid lol. It's just not enough to make me stop this time.
2000 is definitely peak, after you finish watching it going back is kind of surreal how good it was.

I think my generation (myself included) looks back on the Ruthless Aggression Era with rose tinted lenses. For every Texas Bullrope match there was a Hornswoggle winning the cruiserweight title.
No coincidence that ratings significantly declined in that era due to storylines like Katie Vick.

as an 18 year old now that i’ve binge watched all raw, smackdowns, and ppvs from 1998 to early 2002. i can say the attitude era was good but not all it was hyped up to be. maybe it was because i had seen all of the key moments from other wwe shows but it just seems like a complete alternate universe
You had to be there. 2 wrestling companies competing for ratings. The talent got better, the ratings were higher, Monday nights were the best part of the week.
Plus the rise of hardcore wrestling through ECW really trickled into each just a bit and then it became a huge tsunami that dominated the business.
I agree you definitely had to be there. The shows on the network are slightly censored also for content and music. Watching Raw and Nitro was also big part of that time. Wrestling actually being popular made it all feel bigger too.
Smack Down didn't dilute raw it gave fans like myself who couldn't afford cable an opportunity to be fans we knew what happened on raw more or less because of smackdown ill forever be grateful for it because without it i would've lost interest and never woulda gotten to experience some good times

Yea man 5 star matches don’t really mean much when the characters or fighters having the matches are lackluster, it’s sports entertainment the storyline and the build up and plot and promos are a good 85% of it and is what’s most notably remembered the dqs or the stuff that happened after the match. the in ring stuff is usually reliant on crowd reaction and commentating superstars are goofy nowadays it’s like seeing the kids you grew up with watching all the real wrestlers wrestling now and it’s kinda off putting to say the least
Well people like u are just drowned in nostalgia everything is there the promos storyline and characters are there you just cannot see it becaused you are drowned in the past the weekly shows and ppv's alone from last 2 years are way more consitent and better than attitude era's weekly shows and yeah attitude era had huge moments and matches but that doesnt mean that its better than todays wrestling

I disagree with the idea that Smackdown diluted Raw storylines. If anything, it brought them to a wider audience because Smackdown was on UPN which you could get without cable. That right there is why I became a WWF fan, because I literally couldn't watch WCW even if I wanted to.

One thing I've learned is that Triple H really wasn't that good. I mean, he was an ok wrestler, but the other Attitude era main eventers were waaay better. HHH didn't have the Rock's looks and charisma, Stone Cold's personality, Kane's strength, Undertaker's agility, Kurt Angle's technicality or Mankind's stunt work.
Triple H didn't get good until around 2000, and that's because he had great Faces to work with. Not to say that he was bad, because he wasn't, but he wasn't what the WWE tries to say that he was.
