Subscribed. This is gold. I'm currently under a similar adventure (In Godot as well) and was wondering how to create the grand campaign map implementation. After reading multiple sources the best/efficient way I found was the heightmap implementation as usually Paradox does with multiple image layers (per map type). Glad you are taking huge steps already. Bravo! 👏
Thank you for your kind words. I’m happy to hear that you are enjoying my content and get something useful out of it. Please let me know when you have something to show, would love to see your project :) I've been through some iterations on how to do it, but currently I am using the approach where I process the heightmap through a shader (As opposed to changing the mesh itself).
@@GSInteractive Yep, I also saw your recent videos moving to 3D. I'll keep an eye on your work and thinking on releasing a series of videos of my journey as well soon. 😀
Great stuff you're posting. I'm doing something similar (an interactive encyclopedia on a map with a timeline) and your videos are the only ones I can find to get ideas on how to do it in Godot. Thanks a lot!!
Thank you! That is why I started posting, so that we as a community can learn from each other and not re-invent the wheel in our own silos. Sounds like a really cool idea ;)
@@GSInteractive I did a few of the tutorial missions, but I never did go back and finish them, lol. that's probably the hardest part of 4x game design, making it fun, complex AND intuitive
it all starts with a desire. I have some tutorials here to get you started. I advice you just to play around and learn Godot, once you get a hang of it you can get your ideas to life :)
Zooming in without the lines becoming blurry comes to mind of course. But this depends on the art style since one can always just generate some terrain based on a repeating texture @@GSInteractive EDIT: I see the generated terrain approach is the one you went with. Didn't realize part two was already out. Nice!
Thank you! very cool project you have yourself, I will follow closely. I am interested in hearing more about your methodology, if you don't mind sharing?
This is just a devlog, but the script is more or less what I have done in my tutorial series: th-cam.com/video/n3FvvmBDvBY/w-d-xo.html Panel_validation is just a container containing a button that triggers a validation function. It is a function that checks the values in my regions.txt.
I choose Godot not because its better, but because its open source and very lightweight, I store the whole project on Github and work seamlessly between computers, even low-end laptop. Unity is more mature and you'll probably find more map strategy games made with it (For now...) But in the end I don't think it really matters what tool you use, they are both suited for the job. If you do choose Godot, I'll be happy to do some knowledge-sharing. Best of luck!
@GSInteractive thanks for reply. I am thinking to do very easy low graphic mobile turn based strategy game where you can build your cities , grow your economy and build armies with movement points. Same like total war but battles also will be 2D. Can you make a tutorial like this too 👉👈❤️❤️❤️
@GSInteractive hello, sir. Is there any discord server for game developers that I can get help from others? I really would like to do it but dont know many things

Hi Seth! Thank you for the inquiry, but I am not sure what exactly you need my help with. I did have a look at your game and it looks like a fun project! I would stick with one direction, if your goal is a smash bros game, then that's what you should aim for.

The problem with godot is that all editor iterations are terrible. You always need to execute (and lose modifications when stopped). The inspector/serialization is very limited, specially for C#. Unity is way better in this part, you can create and modify(save too) entities in the editor, no need to start play mode. But sucks they're paid and with shit policies.
Unfortunately the recent changes in Unity's policy have scared me away even further. Luckily I have not yet struggled with any editor limitations of Godot, but it might come down the line... We will see
I have the same goal, good luck to you!
Thank you and right back! Hope I will see some content from you one day :)
Same, I also have the same goal but I am way behind than both of you! Anyways good luck to us, I say. Thanks for uploading!

Terra Invicta has one of the nicest maps I've ever seen in a game.
Thank you for input! I will check it out, might get some inspiration
Wicked, thanks for sharing. Will follow with interest! Good luck!
Awesome, thank you!
Great video! Very fun to follow your thought process

I went to make a map game, basically Risk++, during my research discovered paradox... aaaand got stuck on EU4... that was 5 years ago! lol

I want to make one too! But I don't have a pc! Which is why I chose godot!
Yes, I too love how lightweight it is!
Hearts of Iron IV Playtime: 1137.... SO CLOSE to 1337 status :D
Haha true! I've reached it with EU4, so it's about time I get it with the other titles as well
How to make Map Game?
Step 1: Map!
Step 2: Game.
