I played Waterdog often in Chicago around the turn of the century. Mr. Rogan is correct about his phenomenal pool skill. Once watched him tear through the best Chicago pool players in a nine ball tournament. At the time his break was mediocre, but his position play and potting abilities were unparalleled. RIP Don Edwards aka Waterdog.

I bartender in a pool-hall in the mid/late 90's and what Joe described occurred almost every weekend... Such characters and personalities would show up and try to out hustle each other out of whatever they could.... Pool, cards, dice, flipping coins.... I got a cousin that’s about 5ft tall. He is ridiculously good at playing pool. Like, he should have been playing professionally. After he turned 21 he got into drinking really hard. To the point we would enter a tournament and by the halfway point he would be passed out drunk. His brother would go over and wake him up and hand him a cue and he would run the table. He won tournaments without knowing it was even over yet. I saw him go in and start a tab and win just so he could pay it off… it drove people crazy. People would actually try to bully him around because of his size and being so wasted and we would have to handle it. They tried to say his height was why, so he played on a crate one handed. The messed up part is he used the alcohol to get away from his perception of his height keeping him from leading a normal life. He had a great personality when he was sober and had no issues charming women. He just can’t escape the alcohol. I tried playing pool while really drunk but I could barely stand at the table.

I played in a BCA all American tournament in 1998 and he showed up late and registry was over. He walked around to every person that entered and asked if they cared if he bought someones spot in the tourney. We all ended up agreeing and he bought my friends spot for $100. He ended up winning the tournament for around $600 playing with a stealth cue. The bathroom story is 100% true. I saw Waterdog play two other times sober and he lost bad both times. That man had a crazy life story from when he was very young. He could have been one of the best.

My uncle Johnny Morrow never played pro because he didn't like the rules. But he played in Vegas and was based mostly out of Texas. He would play all the champions, before their matches for practice etc. He was really good. But he was a REALLLLLLLY big heroin addict. I mean... getting tore out of the frame before he played a match. This story is eerily familiar to my uncles. Its like, borderlinenceeepy to me. The last match he won, he walked away with a white Cadillac, and $280,000....... this was in 1996 or 97? They found my uncle dead on the floor in his hotel room, his girlfriend, the cash, and the Cadillac were gone. There were 2 needles in his arm. No one knows for sure to this day but what it looks like is probably what it is... js.
    Rest in peace Johnny Morrow

As a recovering opiod/heroin addict, that's the 1 thing I miss is the absolute lack of any nerves whatsoever. The only time I ever got the least bit nervous was when I thought I was going to die from my blood pressure dropping & breathing becoming absolutely labored to the point where if I fell asleep (as it's often impossible not to) I wasn't going to wake up. I used to play poker a-lot on dope &/or pills & I would either play like a God or call off chips w/marginal hands & lose, so essentially I'd break even a lot of the time. Now that I'm off it all, you sort of learn to enjoy feeling normal emotions & sensations again, & it's almost as overwhelming to have these kinds of feelings again as pins & needles & a hard nod from opiates but I still remember w/some fondness those days where I felt nothing but oblivious calm & what is *_the_* ultimate form of relaxation. It unquestionably ruined more than 1/3rd of my life that I've been trying to rebuild over the last few years, but back in the midst of it, it all sorta seemed worth it...
*Edit:* I feel like I should clarify, because I don't want anyone who might read this to think i'm glorifying or encouraging opioid use. When i say that I never felt any sensations of nervousness or anxiety, that only applies to when I had them. When I ran out, or couldn't find them, it was the exact opposite multiplied by 100 once w/drawl took over, where all that anxiety or stress I had run away from by getting high came back w/a vengeance, along w/an inability to go to sleep, nor enjoy any semblance of comfort for even a brief moment until I snorted or shot-up some more. It's also not remotely sustainable, because the more often you use opioids, the more of a tolerance you build up to them, until it gets to a very dark point where (In my case), I was having to come up w/, &/or spend upwards of at-least $100 a day just to satisfy the insatiable desire & relentless burden that is addiction - that goes especially when you're barely making that much at your job, or worse you're unemployed as it's pretty difficult to hold down a job, when you can't pass a drug test nor can you function at anything close to a necessary level w/out having something to eliminate the w/drawls. That specific cycle will inevitably lead anyone in that spot to searching for a cheaper alternative, & because the cost of pain pills had inflated to all-time high, more & more of my friends were switching over to H, & it had suddenly exploded In prevalence w/in the scene & throughout the community, that I decided it was the logical next step in my downward-spiral. While heroin is much cheaper alternative to pharmaceutical opiods, It's also so incredibly easy to overdose on, because it's basically a guessing game of Russian roulette figuring out the right dosage to use, & that is why all of those friends I mentioned, who, once I had committed to trying & get off of it, I had to distance myself from, because they continued to use heroin & eventually fentanyl, have all (but a couple) died as a result. I'm not exaggerating, while i was going through the long, painful & arduous process of recovery, more than 30 of my closest friends & family; 2 of them my best friends on the planet, 1 of them an ex-girlfriend who I never stopped loving, another my aunt whom I loved & adored, & several other close friends - I watched all of them die around me as a result. Not that it's really important or relevant to my point, & I don't want this to be a complete bummer, but seeing all of my friends die after I'd essentially abandoned them leaves me w/a huge amount of what's been referred to as _"survivor's guilt",_ & misplaced anger where I feel like I need someone to blame, but there is no-one directly responsible. I also don't feel as if I deserved to live anymore than they deserved to die.
The point of my rant is that there isn't anything good that comes from opiod addiction, except maybe a harsh lesson demonstrating the darkest aspects of depression, anxiety, pain & regret/the human condition, & when I say it was _"the ultimate form of relaxation",_ that temporary relief from whatever issues I was suffering from comes w/a major detriment/cost, that it doesn't really fix anything, & ultimately only serves to compound upon everything that you're trying to avoid. After losing so many people I cared deeply for, along w/a chunk of my soul & several teeth, plus having nothing to show for over a decade of my life, I have learned my lesson, & I hope anyone who reads this, who may be going through it as I type these words finds the spark to realize that If I can beat it, so can you, or anyone for that matter. It will be the hardest thing you'll ever do, but the reward for that effort is a strength that will, no matter where you're at in life nor what you've done, work like body armor, & once you're past the most difficult part, there's nothing life can throw at you that you can't summon the willpower to overcome or accomplish. Life is filled w/double edged swords - they can cut you deep, or destroy you completely, but I *_promise_* you, *you,* right now, can find the strength to wrestle it away, kick life in the teeth, snatch that motherfucker up by the hilt, & wield it like a hell-bent knight in impenetrable armor. It's in you, & everyone else - you just have to be ready & willing to fight for it.

Day 2 a couple of things happened: 1) I started getting a glass of whisky to sip on during my matches, and 2) I got a pep talk from the goat of women’s pool, Allison Fisher. Played way better, and by the third day I won like 13 of 15 games I played, and the two I lost I felt I should’ve won.

If your muscles twitch and are tense from being anxious, back contorting into a ball while hurting from everywhere, eye-sight blurry, you ain't going to shoot sh!t. It's not that they couldn't play sober but who could play good at withdrawals (which I don't equate to being sober since you ain't in a normal state, makes some stories like this sound like something is missing).

Well who is not a drug addict anyways?
If you get to the age of 10 and not become a drug addict (cigarettes, alcohol, weed, coke, heroin, pharmaceuticals, TRT, other PEDs, coffee, nicotine etc.), then you are an EXCEPTION.
Breediot ‘logic’, ‘ethics’, ‘morality’, ‘rationality’: ’’The birth of my son was unsurprisingly the most significant event in my life so far. I have cherished every instant of his life. He has given my life an intense meaning and purpose. I feel an overwhelming need to provide him with as much happiness as he has brought me. That said, life comes with suffering. To shield him from all suffering would ultimately cause a great deal of suffering in itself. Raising children, if done properly constitutes a truly heroic act of love and patience. The real challenge then becomes raising a child with sincere intention and balance. To decide not to have children simply because that child will inevitably endure suffering is in my opinion, an asinine and twisted bit of logic.’’--------Nah, you are the one with the twisted logic. Romanticising suffering as overcoming a challenge and being heroic. Lol, there was no need to overcome any of that but u decided to create a problem out of thin air to satisfy your own ego.
