Very excited for this! I have 3 of the 4 BP omnis ordered. I don’t plan on getting world of wakanda just because it’s so thick I’d rather save shelf space. Great job as always Omar!
I read the stories in this omni in TP, and although is all over the place in the beginning, it gets better by #5. I like the serious almost intellectual take on the character. A big difference from the Priest run, which has a Blaxploitation feel to it.
It took a while, but I decided to revisit this review after giving up on the run because of how delayed the final issue was. It was already late even before Chadwick passed away, and having just started reading BP mid-story, I was already working backwards, reading the current issues while tracking down the other back issues. Fast-Forward to today, I have the opportunity to pick up a copy of this omnibus for 50% off, and thanks to your review, I am going to pull the trigger. For nostalgia’s sake, and for wanting to read the complete story in order. Thanks, Omar!❤
Can't wait to get my copy, it's coming out towards the 11 of october I believe. I liked this run. I tried Priest's, but I really couldn't get into it until the Casper Cole issues.
Same, both this and Immortal Hulk I picked up in deluxe hardcovers so I skipped on this omni, probably will Hulk as well. Still, stoked for everyone else!
On the wishlist so many good titles to budget for, so hard to choose. I got into the first couple of issues at my local comic shop of the Intergalactic Empire arc and was hooked.
i dropped this run twice i drpped it then came back for inter galactic empire then dropped it again it was justtoo dull and this is now way the best run
This is pretty much my experience. I hate this run and it really bothers me when people try to act like this is the best BP run. Coates was the worst solo writer for the character until the current one, even the Hell's Kitchen stuff is better than this imo.
@@NearMintCondition Thanks for the response, Omar. I can see the appeal of Coates' run as an overall reading experience, and the art is mostly great... I just don't think it did T'Challa any favors. I've only read 1-12 of the first series and 1-4 of the second series, but what I read diminished his intelligence and agency several times and at points, he felt like a supporting character in his own book whose primary skill seemed to be "delegation". The continuity is handled poorly and doesn't build on the end of Secret Wars in a satisfying way, at least imo (we end Secret Wars with T'Challa having helped save the multiverse and the launch of the Wakandan space program and start Coates' run with him on his knees, bleeding from his head- how inspiring). Coates didn't really care about the character by his own admission and it shows. Hudlin's run might be a facile Saturday morning cartoon at times, but he liked the character and wanted to portray him in a cool light. I just wish Black Panther had a writer that loved the character as much as Scott Snyder loves Batman. It seems like all the writers since Coates have a problem with T'Challa, prefer Shuri or the Doras or just want to shoehorn in their own ideology instead of writing a fun and exciting comic. One thing I will give Coates credit for is that his run gives a lot for fans to talk about and debate about. I really wish McDuffie had a long run on the character before he passed- for my money, his brief FF run had the best handling of the T'Challa/Storm relationship and was just a fun read.
Not a fan of Coates but especially the first half of his run was alright so might get this. Can't wait for the Christopher Priest Omnibus tho! That's the best BP run!

Just wanted to ask since a) I put down and never finished the run after reading up to the second arc in singles, and b) in light of your own previously voiced conflicts with it: its inferiority to the Priest run aside, how satisfying was it to reread altogether instead of segmented out through the OHCs?
Depends on your taste. If you like silver age stories go for the early years. My favorite is from the late 90s and it’s Christopher Priest. The modern books your style? This is the one.
Omar, it looks like Comic Releases is still saying that the DM covers for both this and the BP Early Years Omni are coming out on the 11th. Do you know the story straight from David Gabriel? I'd rather wait until I get my next check before preordering this and a few other Omnis, lol.

I highly recommend reading up on this mans history and Ta-Nehisi other writings as a political activist as it seems to have strongly bled into his other writings,you might be shocked at his stance on things and racial issues.

Very few people call out Ta-Nehisi for what he said in trying to get a point out and clout chase by referencing an event where thousands of people died by saying something controversial. At the same time though I'm not really canceling him because I'm not calling for him to be de-platformed or saying that Omar shouldn't review his work. I'm quoting something he said and saying that if what he said bugs you to not support him with your dollars. Very different than calling for him to be de-platformed and unable to sell anything.

Good run but the empire bit shit. So Frist like 20 issue are great and tie ins then it get really bad. Coats captain America is awesome much better
And I think the opposite. I thought Cap started strong and just went downhill.

I read it in singles and agree a slow burn, but when it picks up. It's up there with Priest and Mcgregor for me.

Priest run much better. The Frist arc good and tie in but the galactic empire was so bad. Coats is a great writer cause his captain America rocks

Priest’s BP, but if it’s between this run and Wakanda. Go for this. The others are a series of minis.
