Nasty Wind! - (9 of 10) 5 Day Solo Canoe Trip with my Dog

  • In this video I go over my canoe gear and it's setup with custom modifications. I also get my hustle on to avoid getting caught in some pretty serious wind (yup, Cedar Lake being a bitch again!).
    This is on a 5 day solo canoe trip with my dog Lucy in Algonquin park that I did the in middle of August. It was a great over all trip where I go through some tips & tricks, review some gear, try out a new tarp pitch, see beautiful wildlife and get through some thunderstorms in the night. I hope you enjoy it!
    Much love,
    Troy

    Kudos for promoting light-weight canoe packing. Makes it an adventure not an ordeal. That's a nice camp site in this episode.

    Great trip. I've definitely had that song in my head a time or two. Brings back that old animated commercial. Good stuff.

    I always like the combination of practical elements of solo canoe trips and the experience of the trips themselves in your videos, and this one is a great example. It's just enough gear talk and just enough of the trip itself. I love the tip about setting a weight goal and the dual purposing of your gear. As for the music stuck in your head, I can not trek without an ipod for this reason.

    That tune stuck in your head...lol! Happens to me often. I think it's a good sign; after a while in the backcountry the brain stops thinking so much and can just be, and that's when the humming comes on.

      You're so right. I should think of it that way... instead of getting frustrated I'll think of it as my brain unwinding and just go with it.

    Just saw the video for the log driver's waltz the other day, I remember the video growing up as a kid in Ottawa ON. haha. It definitely gets stuck in your head easily!

    Hey Troy, love all of your tripping videos, thanks for posting your trips for us. Great to see you uploading vids again!
    I'll pass along a tip I was given for the next time you get a song stuck in your head. It may sound a bit odd but it works for me and for others that I've passed it along to. Try humming the old (original) CBC Hockey Night in Canada theme for a few minutes. No idea why, but it works to "wipe the slate" of the other song. And because the melody of Hockey Night is so utterly simple, it doesn't have enough of it's own hook to get stuck in your brain (at least that's my theory as to why it works). Try it, you may be surprised!

      Haha, that's awesome. I'm putting that in my back pocket for the next time I get a song stuck in my noggin.

    You got off the water just in time! Lightening up the pack is always a good thing. My pack is an average of 20 LBS with food and water for 3 season backpacking. Thanks for sharing!

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a light pack. Do you have your gear listed anywhere? I'd be curious to have a look through it. Btw, thanks for watching throughout the series and thanks for taking the time to write as you have now and in the past.

      I use gear grams to keep track of things and customize my pack. I will send a link but Links usually get sent to your spam box so check there if you don't see it .

    Soon as I saw the white caps, yup good time to get off the water. Ever capsize ? I did once, surreal and terrifying. Glad I went through it though and survived, learned a lot.
    Nice vid, thanks.

      I've been lucky enough to have never capsized but had a few close calls where I took in a lot of water. Glad you sorted your capsize out and thanks for watching.

    Nothing like fighting the wind in a solo canoe :-)

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. What makes it especially hard is that it's a 16' boat that's generally designed for two and I'm going with a much lighter pack and smaller dog than I used to so the boat sits very high in the water and is easily caught in the wind. Adds that extra challenge to the mix :) Thanks for watching!

  • @cnyphotovideo

    Yup... I am pretty sure that song is a Canadian thing Troy. However I do get the Edmund Fitzgerald stuck in my head at times. Boy, you don't have much luck with the weather to you? Although I remember one of your trips you had lakes of glass.

    What is the cover/padding that you have on the yoke?

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the Hooligan yoke pad. It makes the portages a lot easier on your shoulders. The Hooligan one is very good as well, I've used others and they would just fall apart but I've been using this one for years.
