We have a branch of the Canada Geese family here in Albuquerque. They enjoy our portion of the Rio Grande year round (including nesting season). Talk about immigrants... one day I expect them to change their family name to perhaps Big New Mexico Geese. Our area also attracts even bigger Snow Geese. We are indeed the Land of Enchantment. It's always something.
I don’t have the best memory so it really helps me to solidify events by (1) taking photos, (2) editing videos, and (3) making a soundtracks to the events.
I totally agree that photos are memories that you can revisit time and again. I have prints (snapshots) going back to the '50s that really help me revisit my childhood. Love your foggy landscapes. Good luck with your move and am looking forward to seeing your new neighborhood.
I really enjoy going out on photo shoots with you and appreciate the way you move around to find various compositions. Looking forward to virtually going on more shoots when you've relocated to Wales. Hope all goes well with the move.
I fully agree, and have one addition: not every photo has to be technically great. Yes, if I go take a hike somewhere to get a few shots, especially if I can easily go back, I'll try to get the ones the light allows me to get. But, if I'm on a vacation and this is my one chance to be somewhere, or perhaps an unusual subject comes along, even if the lighting won't let me get the ideal shot, I'm still going to take it, and I'm still going to enjoy it, because it's part of the story. It might end up only in a photo book or online album for the trip and not printed and hanging on my wall, and I won't flaunt it as an amazing photo, but I'd rather preserve the memory than pass up the opportunity because in other circumstances the shot could be better.
All the shots shown on this video are so soft! I really need to learn how to edit soft. Most of my photography has been concert photography which is all about being sharp and saturated and bold, so when taking landscape photos I still haven't really found my own style that works with that type of image. I still go straight to bold, bright and saturated

That drone footage 5 minutes in is fantastic! Always inspiring to see you shoot such wonderful pictures by what feels like just walking around and shooting handheld.
Canadian Geese are EXTREMELY territorial. I used to have to chase them off the lawn at the restaurant I worked at banging pots and pans together... I should've gotten hazard pay for that. Love your thoughts about photos being a snapshot of your memories. Maybe next year more will happen worth remembering haha
I had a Border Collie a decade ago who would chase geese away on command. We had the only building in the office park whose sidewalks and lawns weren't covered in goose poo. (1-1.5 pounds of poo per goose per day (that's 0.68kg max in science units))
Great stuff as usual. 2020 has been tough and i wish I could buy some of your prints but honestly don't know where they would go at the moment, some rearranging and decorating needs doing at home. Anyhoo I decided to get 1x of your 2019 books and a few Nothings. Hope the move to Snowdonia goes smooth, can't wait for regular Welsh scenery videos and photos. Hi James! I know this video is from two months ago, but I just wanted to let you know that I FINALLY understand your fascination with taking photos of sheep! I took a photo of a sheep just a few days ago, and when said sheep looked directly into the camera, my heart leaped for joy! (Ok, maybe that is a slight exaggeration but you get the picture. Ha! get the picture! Get it?)
Beautiful stuff bud. The S5 and the drone are making things a massive level up for you. Not so keen on the go pro bits though, I guess it makes your life easier though!
Hope you feel better soon James, I did something to my back last week so I sympathise with you. Just hoping it's OK enough not to impact on my break in the lake District in a few days time. Hope the move goes well.
Canadian a very vicious when it comes to Englishmen!! Only when they have young ones to protect or you invade their space! Great video and a great message that I will share with my photography students. Nothing like having a "remembering" photos in whatever cloud base you use. It is fun to revisit those photos and the story behind it. Like in Google Photos, on this day ... Then 2 hours later that you spend looking at all those photos, you miss the sunrise!! Stunning photos. Interesting point about photos as memories. There is something about the ‘right’ photo. You know it when you see it. It’s like the difference between manga and anime. You can stare at a brilliant manga panel forever and marvel at it. As for the bird in sky shot, if you had substituted the sheep there, that would have been awesome. Take care.

Aaaahhh! Peak District. I was watching this for a full 3mins before I realised that this place felt like somewhere I have been but I couldn't really figure out why. But indeed I have been to peak district 2 years back and we might have exited right near that bridge.

To solve your shoe problems: Wool socks (not less than 80% wool) really cut down on the freezing. Wool soles (inside) also help tremendously (similar to the ones you have, but with real wool ;)). But the most important preparation was to get the shoes dry inside. Like really dry. I sometimes bake them in the oven at 40°C for half an hour before going out, but cool them off before you put them on, cause else you could trap warm, moist air inside which will turn cold on you. It´s also worse having warm shoes becoming colder than having them just stay at body temp.
Can't stop watching your videos mate, and love the detailed painterly look of your shots. Really good having someone who isn't telling us we need the MOST expensive body and lens on the market, it gets to the point where I'm wondering am I the only person deciphering how on earth it's affordable? I've been using a Lumix FZ1000 for a few years now, and I'm not really sure where to go from here... Being in the 'bridge' category, I can understand it being dismissed as nowhere near pro. Opinions?

Such amazing pictures!! Love them!! And yes, geese do bite, they even attack.. In my local park, people go through the grass if the geese are on the path.. But they are different geese, they are white ones, not sure if that makes a difference 😅
What wonderful conditions and landscape. I love the drone footage and images. Geese can give you a nasty peck, but only if you invade their territory or get near their nest or babies. They are lovely intelligent creatures, and out in the open like this will be no problem at all. They can be quite territorial in farmyards and domestic breeds are often used as guards because of the noise they make when they spot an 'invader'.
Completely agree with your thoughts on memories! I was hoping to see some optical phenomena with those sky conditions, though :) Do you ever see halos around the sun and such?
On a hike in a local forest preserve a while back, two Canada geese swam past me up the Des Plaines River, one of them giving me the side eye as they passed. A few minutes later I saw two geese running toward me on the trail from upstream. First thought, “Where’s the fire?” Second thought, “I’m the fire!” I put up an aggressive display which convinced them not to mess with me. It’s not every day you get to fight off what are essentially avian dinosaurs.
Gorgeous countryside and that mist\fog is amazing. That bridge picture is very cool. Did you start using the Lumix S5 camera yet or have any plans to try it? I'm on the fence between jumping into m43 or trying the new S5, having only owned APS-C stuff thus far.
Interestingly, the reason mentioned in the video is the exact reason why I stopped and re-started my hobby in photography. When I was in high school (secondary school), I showed up to an event once with a camera and from that point forward was the defacto photographer for everything. Which meant I rarely got to experience an event without a camera in between me and what was happening. I also despise taking photos of people, I'm terrible at it, I got into photography for nature/scenic photography and that is still my style. However fast forward a few years and I'm in grad school for conferences and I get the chance to travel to places I nor most of my family have never seen. So of course while I'm out I take photos of my surroundings and notice the limitations of a cell phone camera in being able to take the photos I want, and I get back into the hobby as a way of trying to capture the world outside to bring back home.
With you on the memories I have 1.3 million of them.... Appreciate you trying to find a sheep for the photos would have been perfect. I don’t really do landscape but inspired by your recent videos last week went out to capture some water logged fields. So now my primary photography tip is to take a pair of secetures with you to clip twigs and bushes which are ruining the shot..... Good luck with your move hope the bonsai is still alive! Used to work outdoors. All seasons. Cold feet was a usual in winter. To help keep feet warm....try "cardboard" as inner soles. Wrap feet with paper. Sitting on a cold surface? Try a piece of cardboard.
Those Canadian Geese can seriously go into defense/attack mode if they are nesting. Wrong season right now, though. Luckily. Looking for input on photo printers, I made a note of the one you have listed. Any updates? - Elaine J.

Used to work outdoors. All seasons. Cold feet was a usual in winter. To help keep feet warm....try "cardboard" as inner soles. Wrap feet with paper. Sitting on a cold surface? Try a piece of cardboard.
