Or you have a camera that shows the battery and card status on the shoulder display even when it's off..... One look and you know that the camera is ready.
***Spoiler Alert*** I don't know why but I feel oddly disappointed that the worse nightmare was forgetting the SD cards and not a mangled camera like the one in the preview pic appeared to look like to my tired eyes 🤔
Yeah, this is not SUCH a bad nightmare. You can usually find an SD card in any town. What's worse is a "no SD card" message when the SD card, full of your shots, IS in the camera. Just it's dead now, and you don't have a backup.
Yeah I thought for sure he had slipped and camera was dropped. I fell on a slippery rock trying to get an idyllic shot in Wales like that a couple years ago but luckily only wet my pants and shoes, camera was ok.
Worst nightmare happened to me recently. On shoot with a couple (just before their baby is born) took about 1000 photos. Saved on both cards. Got to my studio, started transfering the photos, crashed on photo #14. Went to see what happened, both SD cards were clean. No files whatsoever ... a single tear dropped down my face, then ... massive anger! Had to reshoot the whole thing the following week... first time it happened to me in 10+ years of shooting every single week. Set both cards on fire. Bought new cards. They did the job fine.
Saw your title - and having just got back from a tramp/hike to Kapuni Lodge on Taranaki on which I'd discovered I had no SD card in my camera and nor did I have a spare stowed away somewhere even after taking great care to pack everything I needed the night before - I immediately thought, 'today it's no SD card in the camera!' And lo and behold, there you were - remedying a 'No SD card' from three years prior. Fortunately for me, I won't have to wait three years to get up to Kapuni Lodge again as it's a 40-minute drive from Te Hāwera to Te Rere o Kapuni followed by a 90-minute uphill trek. So enjoy your videos, James. Looking forward to the new location and the new office. Oh dear on the news that Wales is going into lockdown. Stay safe.
James, I really like it that you show your shots as you talk about them, even if you don’t think it the best composition. It really helps me (the viewer) see the decision making process and therefore improve my own photography. Thanks as always 👍
Hi James, what a wonderful spot. You got some beautiful shots. Many congratulations on your move to Wales, I wish you all the very best in your new home and lots of wonderful photography. So pleased to see your channel going from strength to strength since I met you in Edinburgh, you really deserve it. You're the only photograher I follow now :-) Sadly I haven't worked since March due to the pandemic, and I really miss it, but it'll all pass soon enough and I'll appreciate it even more when I can take on work again. Keep up the great work, I love all your humour and light-heartedness, not to mention the wonderful photography. Warmest best wishes, David :-)
You should consider using a longer lens (70-200mm equivalent) for woodland. I saw at least 3 marvelous compositions in the first four minutes of this video that a longer lens would have captured brilliantly. They're great for isolating details, tree branch patterns, etc. in the woods. My last foliage shoot the other day, I used my long zoom almost exclusively. Anyway, congrats on the new house. I look forward to your upcoming Wales content.
Sitting on a beautiful pic at 1:53! No, not your keister, the beauty lined up composition in your vlog shot. Always find something I've learned and enjoyed with your videos...thank you sir for your continued treks and the vistas you show us!
This episode was mint mate. That view looking back downstream at 3:27 was beautiful. I certainly would have taken a pic of that, but I’d probably have taken 100 different shots of that beautiful location.
Cracking video James. The colour in that valley was spectacular. Definitely interested to see how you edited those shots to bring out the best of Autumn.
I would like to see this too, as well as how you focus stack the handheld shots. I am too lazy to carry a tripod, and have tried to stack images where I have focussed on various depths within the scene, but even though I attempt to keep the same view in screen the stacking has never turned out well!
Last time I tried for drone footage like that, my drone had it's first (and last) swimming lesson. Much more careful with the replacement. Including insurance! Beautiful work as always, James.
Never seen the need to remove the sd card, just plug in the cable that comes with the camera two the pc and away you go. Congratulations on your move. What a brilliant looking location for photography, so lucky. Thanks again for sharing James and stay safe.
Good to see you :) And, glad you're moved. Funny you should mention the tripod. I am looking into getting a TLT Bucky for my work. Got some saving up to do. But, absolutely interested in seeing the edits. That is one of my biggest challenges, currently. The edits... Best of luck getting back to normal!
Got back yesterday to discover I'd shot my autumn stuff in jpeg. Low quality jpeg. Did a re-set on the Panasonic, and restored preferred functions except for Raw. Couldn't work out why some edit functions weren't working. Chump.
Yup, had this happening to me too, my girlfriend was EXCITED to drive back 15 mins while her friend waited at the lake.... Never close any port on your camera before putting the card or battery back in. Never ever close empty ports!
@@raksh9 There is absolutely no reason to ever leave the SD card out of the camera. Transfering the data is usually done in seconds and then its ejected and back in the camera. Get a second one, switch through them with charging. Also, while you empty your card and charge the battery you don't use that camera - put it somewhere safe.
Hey James @13:05 you mentioned "windscreen wipers" for the lens of a camera on a drone. Brilliant idea! :) Wishing I had the windscreen wipers for my Gopro, on my motorcycle helmet, vlogging here in the Lake district over the past few weeks. Thanks to you, your hints and tips and travelling to places to get that "perfect shot" you inspired me to bring three of my passions together: Motorcycles, Photography and beautiful scenery. Why am I talking uphill again? Haha. Sorry to hear about another lockdown there James, but great you're in a new home to keep you busy for a bit. The scenery there looks stunning. We had lockdown over autumn unfortunately so missed a lot of it this year. Really enjoyed the mix of drone & go pro footage.
what a beautiful location James, you got some lovely photos that day! would love to see more editing videos as well - always helpful. cheers to you from Toronto
Wow James, Wales is definitely pretty. You've inspired me to go out after church tomorrow and visit a few of the places here in Central Texas that I know may be starting to show Fall color. We've had a couple of cold weather fronts come through recently. Crossing my fingers... Sorry to hear about the pending lockdown. We're possibly facing more as well since the positive case numbers are climbing again. Hang tough. We'll all get through this together!
Welcome to Wales, mate! I know you lived here before, a while ago, but welcome back. Lived here for 37 years, myself. I am, what people call, a Welshman.
When I see your video length hits the 10 mins+ mark, it only seems right to make a lush coffee and sit back and enjoy whatever is about to appear before my eyes.
Great video as always and good luck to you both in your new home... When we get back to a bit of normality, will you be running any workshops there in Snowdonia?
James, yes I’d like to see the editing process please. Enjoy Wales 🏴. Hope your lockdown isn’t as long as ours was in Melbourne, it (kind of) finishes today with limited retail shopping opening up.
Loved this vlog mate. What a stunning location! Congratulations to you and Emily on the successful move "home", will we get a glimpse of the new house? Crap that you are going to have to endure another 2 weeks isolation, I think we are all just sick and tired of this damn virus, my heart goes out to those who are struggling to make ends meet. Was curious, so Googled it. "Close to the disused 19th century, water-powered Machno Woollen Mill built in 1839, there is a drystone-built, packhorse bridge over the Machno river. This is known as the 'Roman Bridge' but it is actually 16th or 17th century. Penmachno is, however, near the section of the Sarn Helen Roman road from Betws-y-Coed to the Roman fort of Tomen y Mur."
Another great video James 👍. Loved those photos. I might have to go that way when I’m next able to go to Conwy. I’d definitely be interested in a video of how you edited those photos 👍
Love this spot at the Roman Bridge! I think your return shoot after worst nightmare paid off big time! When I saw the worst nightmare title I had to see what it was. No card in the camera. Ugh. How about inadvertently hitting the format button on a 10 year old camera and deleting two days worth of photos? Tried recovery and no such luck. Crying did you say? 😢 Still recovering and will never do that again! Your post helped me on my way to thinking of return to redo the entire 2 days worth of photos. Hopefully won't be 3 years. Cheers James. Love your photographs, videos, and commentary. Also sound like you and the spouse made a nice choice in moving to Wales. Looks gorgeous.
Get over yourselves guys. Every shot of water is blurred unless you have the luxury of a bright day and 1/1000 sec shutter speed. James shot at 1/13 sec will show some movement. It's just a case how much or how little is appropriate for the scene and how you want the image to look. James was just being narrow minded and so are you.
@@CornishMotorcycleDiaries Enjoy your boring molten wax pictures, I guess. A small amount of unavoidable movement is fine, but intentionally using long exposures on water just looks disgusting to me.
Painmaker as I said, just get over your narrow minded view of life and you'll learn lots. Sometimes fast is good, sometimes it's not. Disgusting is a term of abuse not necessary here. We can disagree politely? Can't we 😏
While photographing the Golden Gate bridge more than 30 years ago from a cliff on the Sausalito side, I started to slide down. It was a 750-foot drop. I was wearing street shoes, and there was nothing but dirt on the way down, so I had no easy way to put on the brakes. There was a small rock sticking up, which I grabbed. I gingerly removed the Hasselblad from my neck, figuring I could come up with $3000 to replace it, but I couldn't replace me. Luckily, I was able to scramble back to safety (very carefully!). Trust me, there are worse things than getting out there without a card. BTW, wouldn't it be smart to carry a spare card in your pocket? Then It wouldn't matter whether or not the camera had dual slots.
Another nice video. And yes, I am curious to how you edited those photos. There's a certain look, been trying and trying, but can't seem to make it. Lift shadows AND the blacks? Seem to be something of lowering contrast in the darks too. And maybe darkening some specific colours, while increasing their satuaration? I know every photo is different, but I'm just curious to that 'general idea' you apply to 'most' images. Yes, I would like a video about that. Congrats with a new house btw. Cheers.
Hi James: You must be so happy to have such a diverse new area to explore. I have been to Snowdonia but unfortunately only for 1 day. It is certainly on my bucket list location. I will be in Patagonia in April 2022 so I hope that you create some new content of your trip for your channel so I will know what to look forward to. Keep Covid-19 during this next lock-down period . . . keep creating . . . and keep happy. Cheers, Keith Pinn (Barrie, Ontario Canada)
Back in the Stone Age (before digital) I had a roll of exposed 120 film squirt out of my fingers and unroll in front of my client... the bride... at her wedding. Lost all the shots of the bridesmaids, the bride, and her father entering the sanctuary, plus the bride and bridegroom making their way to the back of the church after the ceremony.
Happened to me in Germany in March. Over several days I'd been balancing the load out I was taking for walking around the city of Nuremberg. Trying to work out what I needed for casual photography with my X-T1 and still have bag capacity for gifts, snacks etc. Third day enjoying a tour and realised I left the SD card in my laptop from transferring photos the night before. Gutted. So I was faced with a 2 hour mess around going back to the hotel or just enjoy as much as I could and use the phone. I keep spare SD cards in my camera bag but I didn't bring that on this day. Lesson learnt. Luckily my X-T3 now has 2 card slots. So I always keep a 32gb UHS-II card in the 2nd slot that I don't really use. To cover that in future.
Tony Northrup said buy dozens of cheap memory cards. Not top shelf, just knock offs. And stick them everywhere. In your backpack, in your wife's purse, in your VW trunk (boot, in your case), etc., etc. That way you should never find yourself without memory cards.
That is a very interesting bridge and amazing drone shot! I agree with your worst nightmare especially when it happens with a client and you have to go buy some sd cards at a gas station! The good thing about them, they are cheap for 2GB! This didn't happen to me, a friend told me that story!!
Loved today's episode! The scenery is just amazing! You should make a video on the build of your new office/studio! People do enjoy those kind of videos! Well, at least I do! All the best! Keep doing great content!
Yep, I've forgotten cards. Extra batteries, mics when needed. Tripod when needed. Even worse, I accidentally turned my volume off when doing video tours! Nice....had the mic set up. Ready to go! Did my tours, loaded the vids on my computer afterwards...nope, no sound! So lots of extra hours spent on voice overs....when will I learn to do tests first????
You sir are quite humorous! I enjoy your content immensely. I hope to be in wales sometime soon and I hope to run into you out and about with our cameras! Keep up the good work!
Always interested in learning from others. Love the composing you do, would also love to see your editing process and Lightroom workflow(s). Still trying to break away from Bridge and Camera Raw for editing. Congrats on the move and thanks for the reminder about the sale.
This setting reminds me of something out of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. It is gorgeous and a bit haunting at the same time. Mesmerizing images!😍
I did that over the summer. Brought my brand new refurbished camera to my favorite forest specifically on a cool day to get some water photos. No card. Thankfully there was a store an hours drive away so I was able to buy a new one to use. Sure I could easily have just come back the next day, but I was so annoyed with myself that I insisted on going back and staying for a few hours to make up for the lost time.
Create a checklist you run through each time you leave the door(for photography). Could be done digitally or just print up a whole bunch of em. Works a charm!
I did that about a month ago. I rode my motorbike about 45 minutes from home, got to where I wanted to take photos to discover no SD card. I then rather angrily rode back home to retreive said Sd card then rode back to the location. Over 2 hours riding back and forth because I left the SD card in the reader on my PC.
Personally I bring a spare polarizer with me on trips (a large one, and then use step down rings if needed). Of course I don't spend a ton on the "backup" polarizer since it is a backup and rarely to I need to call on it (so I might spend $100 on one but it mostly lives in the camera bag, but like most other things you have spares of, it's a good idea to keep a second one handy, even a cheaper one would work in a pinch, over no polarizer).
Ironically I had to cancel my trip the other week to Snowdonia because of lockdown, and switched to the Peak District; and found your back catalogue of videos great for location scouting as well as tips when I got there...... hopefully Wales will be open soon so tnat I can get there... stay safe and welll :-)

cool video of some amazing scenery mate. Would it be possible to see those images without your texture or presets on them? I thought the colours were better without the preset... those greens from the drone looked amazing.
Would love to hear about the mindshift rotation 180 that you're wearing. Torn between the rotation, shimoda action x30 and an atlas athlete (or just a backpack). Is it the 34l that you have, and how do you find it?
If it makes you feel any better about your impending visit to the dentist, I pretty much have at least two of those mints every time I get in my car, and buy them by the multi pack 😳 This really is the worst nightmare. I did this on a shoot the other day where I was hoping to get my photo of the month for the club I'm in. DOH! 🤦♂️ Congratulations on the move and great photos James! Wales is a lovely place. One of my favourite for biking!
I'm confused. Why do you have a camera without a card in it? I always replace my card in my camera once done importing and checking I've got everything. I never even have to think about it because that card goes right back in the camera. Is it bad for the cards or the camera to keep a card in it when not in use?
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Also makes me *less* likely to drop my entire memory card collection off a cliff/into a river/down a canyon. String will do the job, but I spend a few pounds and use cheap coiled kevlar lanyards. Given the cost of memory cards (even cheaper ones) it makes sense to me & it's already saved my bacon once...
Nice video, Great Location and beautifull photo’s. Love the postproces. Love to know More about That. It looks foggy, desaturated and has a nice vibe over them. Succes with the Kock down. In Holland they are Talking about a lockdown. Cheers
It was funny when you explained you normally use the viewfinder. It was almost an apology. Whatever works best for you at the time is fine, GoPro filming or not. Great photos as always. Wales is beautiful, I hope to visit again some day.
yeah I do have mini panic attacks when i'm on my way to a location thinking if i left my sd card case even though i've checked it 5-10x before leaving. Same goes for the batteries.
I recently did a whole session of product photography in medium size jpegs instead of RAW due to lazily not checking my settings AND couldn't shoot it again. That felt amazing. Anyway... Congrats on the move. That's a beautiful spot!

Another great video James 👍. Loved those photos. I might have to go that way when I’m next able to go to Conwy. I’d definitely be interested in a video of how you edited those photos 👍
Cheers Rob! :)
"I don't like blurring water." I knew there was something I liked about you.
Me to i dont like the blurring water ..
I agree, everyone seems to be drooling over those photographs but I just feel like they're wasted shots.
Can't we 😏
I just love this video James, one of your best, the tree colours are absolutely gorgeous, catch you later.
That's the perfect meme for a t-shirt... "I have got SD cards, I've checked!"
Would love to see your editing process. Gorgeous photos as always.
Nice video mate. I have made that same mistake multiple times. Even forgot my battery once.
Nice video, photos James. :)
God the thumbnail and the title of the video made me think you had dropped your camera in the river ... I'm glad you only forgot your SD card! 😁
Haha, thankfully not :)
Cheers Keith, much appreciated :)
Great stuff James!
Tony Northrup said buy dozens of cheap memory cards. Not top shelf, just knock offs. And stick them everywhere. In your backpack, in your wife's purse, in your VW trunk (boot, in your case), etc., etc. That way you should never find yourself without memory cards.
loved the Drone footage!! keep up the good work,,
That is a very interesting bridge and amazing drone shot! I agree with your worst nightmare especially when it happens with a client and you have to go buy some sd cards at a gas station! The good thing about them, they are cheap for 2GB! This didn't happen to me, a friend told me that story!!
1:27 next video: "this video is sponsored by the dollar shave club"
Great video, I would love to see how you edited these photos. Really like the colours of them.
Loved today's episode! The scenery is just amazing!
You should make a video on the build of your new office/studio! People do enjoy those kind of videos! Well, at least I do!
All the best! Keep doing great content!
Morning James. Good to see another video - Snowdonia? Dodgy subject at the mo-they just cancelled my holiday! Thanks for the reminder ! Grrrrr
Don’t know if anyone has asked this but what kind of drone you have use and where is the location of this video please ?
P.s. brilliant pictures
Cheers Anthony :)
This has happened with me SO MANY TIMES! Haha! I love your content man! Keep at it! Hope you're safe!
Geat Vlog James. It would be nice to see a video about editing this photos.
Nature shots can be tricky but shooting simple is always best.
I love the drone shot of the bridge. I don't use my OG Mavic Pro much but, when I do, I prefer it for photos more than video, in most cases.
Hi, loved the vlog, please can you say where the bridge is...as I've googled it and it doesn't appear at all..P.S. I love my G9
What locations specifically did you enjoy photographing? Considering venturing up there soon.
@@curtisjeffs6731 At this time of year, Padley Gorge (park where Google maps says Ice Cream van); Mam Tor or Winnants if there is a chance of an inversion; Higger Tor at Sunset; The Roaches at sunset; Chrome Hill
Hope this helps ..?? :-)
cool video of some amazing scenery mate. Would it be possible to see those images without your texture or presets on them? I thought the colours were better without the preset... those greens from the drone looked amazing.
Sure mate, will probably do an edit video at some point! :)
Would love to hear about the mindshift rotation 180 that you're wearing. Torn between the rotation, shimoda action x30 and an atlas athlete (or just a backpack). Is it the 34l that you have, and how do you find it?
I've got the 22 and it works great - but I love my f stop lotus equally for more rounded usage :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Hadn’t seen that one before, but thanks for that. Now I have 4 bags on my list to choose from. 😅
you make the best videos on youtube lol love them all :)
Check out Pecos Hank
If it makes you feel any better about your impending visit to the dentist, I pretty much have at least two of those mints every time I get in my car, and buy them by the multi pack 😳
This really is the worst nightmare. I did this on a shoot the other day where I was hoping to get my photo of the month for the club I'm in. DOH! 🤦♂️
Congratulations on the move and great photos James!
Nope, just bad habits of not checking the card is back in if I get distracted by something :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto THAT I can relate to, lol.
Where are you in Snowdonia? Looks amazing.
Love the new neighbourhood James, motivation must come easily in those surroundings? . First-class face fur too.
I keep my memory card holders physically attached to my bag - makes it much harder to forget any cards.
That, is genius :)
Cheers
Defo interested in seeing how you edited the photos. Where in Snowdonia was the location for the video ? Love the channel keep up the good work 👍🏻
It was funny when you explained you normally use the viewfinder.
That's a beautiful spot!
how much is the trip to Patagonia ?
