      If you haven't seen it yet then you should watch the documentary series "Hollywood: A Celebration Of The American Silent Film". It's a 13 episode documentary released in 1980 by Thames Television. It has interviews with many actors, directors, cameramen and others who worked in Hollywood during the silent era. You can watch it on TH-cam. It's on the " "Joao Antonio Franz" channel.

    Fun Fact...There is a stage play called Merton & The Movies...This...Isn't it...Most of this footage is lifted in generous chunks from a 1980 BBC 13 part Doc called "Hollywood"...I do appreciate Mr. Merton's taking us to original locals in the modern day...FYI Merton &/Of The Movies was a play Buster Keaton toured with his wife...Anything about Buster you ever wished to know...A PBS American Master's Buster Keaton: A Hard Act To Follow...It's out there and it's stellar...Thanks for this upload...Well worth the view...

    This isn't bad as far as it goes; I like the on-location shooting, and the host is ok. However, it borrows MASSIVELY from the already-existing, and COMPLETE, history of silent film called "Hollywood: A Celebration of Silent Film" by the great Kevin Brownlow. In fact, the Allan Dwan interview is taken right from THAT documentary. Could've at least credited it.

    In terms of filmmaking, "Birth of a Nation" is such a masterpiece for it's time; so unfortunate that D.W. Griffith chose to make such a deceitful and poisonous film. I guess he joins Leni Riefenstahl in infamy.

    • @petesmitt
      @petesmitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Despite its controversial story, the film has been praised by film critics, with Ebert mentioning its use as a historical tool: "The Birth of a Nation is not a bad film because it argues for evil. Like Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will, it is a great film that argues for evil. To understand how it does so is to learn a great deal about film, and even something about evil.

      Not to justify the racist treatment of former slaves, DW was the son of a Confederate Colonel which may explain his film’s portrayal.

    • @yolandagaines1760
      @yolandagaines1760 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @ppineault, I think it should be noted that D.W. Griffith later apologized for the film and even if he didn't I'd still love him as a filmmaker. His' Orphans of the Storm' captivated me at the tender age of 11 yrs. Griffith will always be my favorite director alongside Ford, Wyler and Lean. He'll never be infamous to me. I am a person of 'color'.

    I tuned into this for some history and perspective on the film and television industries. I was exhausted before the end of episode one because for each and every little factoid given the viewer is subjected to a video clip. That got to be so distracting that I wasn't picking up on what he saying. Pity.

    That Wagner theory was such a stretch. Birth of a nation is techinally impressive and a masterpiece of its era but obviously racist and flawed, end of story. So annoying that they spent so much time cherry-picking his films/ bad scenes.
