I was born in Van Nuys and grew up in Altadena and South Pasadena during the 60-70's. I remember hiking up to the summit of Mount Wilson on those hot summer days. The Santa Ana wind was a blessing in that the smog in the LA Basin was blown out into the Pacific Ocean, and I could actually look into DLA with an unobstructed view. As was mentioned in this video, fire season also was high during the summer, and the wind could create a nightmare for firefighters in a fire. At 60, Michigan is now home for me. I have family members interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale. I come home once in a while to visit. Southern California will always be in my heart. It is 5/8/20 as I type this out. Gavin Newsom is starting to open up places in California. COVID-19 is not a joke, my brothers and sisters. Please be safe, follow current practices, and look after one another! Peace and love. Dan. Lmao I love looking back on Covid and people commenting like this and acting like Ebola was sweeping through our country taking out 10% of our population😂🤡

It wasn't that long ago that man lived in complete harmony with mother nature, at least in the America's. Now look at us, we are a complete and utter blight on this beautiful blue marble.
This is a wonderful series. I enjoyed every single episode. Thanks to Masters and KCET for doing it. I grew up in LA, mostly in the Echo Park area. I am old enough that I got to experience many things that are now gone. I decided to leave LA many years ago to move to the forests of far northern coastal California. I have no regrets about my choice. Seeing the series validated my decision to leave. So much of what mattered to me in Southern California is now gone. Very, very sad.
I've always loved reading Nathan Master's articles, and I love the whole idea behind this show. I will definitely watch. Will all the episodes be available online?
+Alejandro Duran Yes. All three episodes will be available online the day they air. Check out the series page for schedules, extra clips and great articles from Nathan and others: www.kcet.org/shows/lost_la/
I had no idea that Grizzly bears were extinct. Even after seeing one of the preserved specimens at the Natural History Museum and reading that they were extinct, I still could not believe it. I thought it must have been a mistake that was typed on the description. I learned so much from this episode, it made me so incredibly sad to learn about the demise of the grizzly bear but so happy that there is a program like this to educate us. I hope this show comes back for a second season.
Yes, the loss of the grizzly here makes me sad. I find it hard to imagine symbiosis with it and modern life like the less aggressive black bear. I hear the grizzlies were more offensive. Still saddens me.
This is a great series! Will there ever be an episode on Griffith Park, the 110 fwy and the effect Disney had in the Los Feliz/Silverlake Lake/Burbank/Glendale areas? U know California adventure is designed after the mentioned cities! And Disneyland was initially going to be set where the Buena Vista studios are now, before they found the orange grove in Anaheim! I’ve done a lot of beautification and conservation work throughout the LA basin and SGV water shed! I love our history!
@@kerryjones1257 Grizzlies in Montana & Wyoming are a different subspecies compared to the California Grizzly. The Largest California Grizzly grew as Large as a Kodiak Bear.
My dad always called them the Santana winds, not the Santa Ana winds, so I only knew of them as the Santanas until I was in my teens...I wish this had addressed that too...
I’m shocked that KCET didn’t focus upon the racist aspect to the grizzly bear and how sexism and racism ultimately destroyed them. I mean, isn’t that the theme of this entire Lost LA series? Racism sexism and animalism.
Wow! I never thought those winds were a problem when I was a kid. They seemed to get worse as the wildlands slowly disappeared & the houses took over with asphalt roads, sidewalks & freeways. There seems to be no end in sight with out current climate changes. I now live in Northern Cali & Shasta County is making some of the same mistakes that Los Angeles has previously done. They are paving this paradise to put up parking lots. Adding to the climate changes & air quality. I may need to leave the state if I want to have a worry free life in my last days on this earth! We call these winds DIABLO WINDS in NorCal!
"Fun loving omnivore"??!! They didn't get the scientific name "Ursus horribilis" for their Winnie the Pooh-esque personalities! It's easy to romanticize the grizzly bear, but the idea that the grizzly could be reintroduced into California and everything would be hunky-dory is beyond naive.
And then the white man came. I see a pattern here things that go extinct people that go extinct Indian tribes is it because of the white man. There sense of entitlement is mind boggling 🤬
clarkewi Bears usually kill people due to terrority or protecting their cubs. They actually are Omnivores like us. They'll typically eat Fish like Salmon and also Wild Berries.

Didn't Altadena have lots of dairies back in the day? Seems I remember milk from there 🤔🤷🙋
As a Californian I always get sad looking at our state flag knowing that the majestic animal on it is gone forever

You should go hangout with them in Wyoming

I’m a native of So Cal, earthquakes wildfires and urban interface. Yes there is an uncomfortable vibe that leaves us all in a mystical unrest ✌️
This was the greatest find i’ve ever came across on TH-cam!
I just stumbled on this KCET presentation. Two very informative topics you might enjoy as I did.
Can you make more videos like this Los Angeles is really a City with an interesting history.

The grizzly bear segment
editing of this show is
absolutely superb!
Nice work on the graphics! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Thank you for posting it.
Everyone’s freaking out in the Santa Annas and meanwhile I’m just sneezing all the time
Late to the party but glad I found it.
I'm obssessed with this
Thank you so much for this video upload.
In my humble opinion, let them be reintroduced among the population, and Whoever navigates the bears wins. The homeless issues will go down. BONUS

"Babylon Sisters" Steely Dan...."here comes those Santa Ana winds again"
Great, great video
Nice content. Thanks guys :)
I am looking forward to more of this series to better understand my hometown.
Thank you Sir!👏👏👏
Good stuff.
Truly sad story of "Lost L.A." We have wiped so much natural beauty and so many species (Grizzly Bears) from the face of Mother Earth.
How to describe the Santa Ana winds?
(1) Hot
(2) Windy
My work here is done.
alex carter and a bit hellish
Los vientos de Satanas! =Devil's winds! Excellent programs! gracias!

Extinct in southern california
Extinct in all of California
They're not extinct, but their population is relatively small. They are in Montana, Wyoming and parts of Idaho.
Theyre too dangerous around humans
such a contradiction how California has a grizzly on their state flag.... but drove them to go instinct in their state.
Antonio Perales del Hierro Yeah but who gives a fuck about them. No one
As soon as the video started i thought of ALL THE COYOTES RUNNING A MUCK AS I TYPE THIS IN LA!
I love the Santa Ana winds 🌬
very nice

I believe the US Wildlife people should reintroduce the Grizzly to LA.
They would have a lot of overweight mammals to eat 😂.

unbelievable treatments
The only thing creepy about the Santa Ana winds is that whispering woman describing them….
the only good thing about covid is that it introduced me to wearing a mask during the Santa Annas. I'm never going back!
LA also has a mini tornado alley
I say reintroduce the Grizzly to LA. Maybe then I could afford to buy a place.
Hello from Oso flako Ca
I'm from imperial beach California and I get some Santa ana winds, I think maybe, but I call them Kona winds, that's wierd
nice video

Hello, great documentairy! By the way, what's the song that starts in 2:25 ?
Why have no Grizzly Bears been found at the La Brea Tar Pits?
Or people....
They found humans and many animals
Griswalds? In Wally World?
Move the people
We need to reintroduce the T Rex to California. Let’s go to the next level. Why not?
"You used me to adorn your flag, but at the same time you pushed me into extintion. So who can understand you?" Signed up by a grizzly bear.
This is very sad.
we're driving the planet to extinction
No, were driving humans into extinction. The planet will remain, not us though.
This planet will replenish itself to its pristine state long after we are gone
thaintriguing1 there is no planet, because the earth is FLAT!!
At 2:42 is a picture of a giant ground sloth... not a bear. The tail and number of claws should make that obvious.
Same difference
I don’t know anything about Los Angeles & I personally never experienced a fire.
Such amazing animal's ..one of God's creatures who were hunted DOWN 😒😞😤😤
Man doesn’t need to live in harmony. He is supposed to subdue it. That’s how God in the Bible wants it.

I think it might be suicide bridge in Pasadena. I know at :29 they show suicide bridge to the left of the freeway
This is like scary wtf 🤣

Santa Ana winds 2025
suppose native americans lived harmoniously with grizzlies cuz there were far fewer native americans
