It isn't the deadliest lake in the world. Assuming you don't drown, you could survive in it pretty well. In Lake Karachay, 1 hour would cause you to die of radiation poisoning. Frying Pan Lake is almost boiling, and Lake Nyos and Kivu literally explode.
*For clarification since most of yinz didnt watch the entire video:* You can actually swim in the lake when the water temperature is cool enough but you should be careful of getting the water in your mouth, nose, eyes or an open wound as it would be extremely painful...you also should watch your step due to the jagged floor. I've been waiting for a video about Lake Natron for 2 years. The first time I learned about it in another similar video, it couldn't answer one of my questions, and this video did. Thank you to the people who made this.
There's a lot you have absolutely no clue about. Research the pink lake of Australia for another neat topic; though the cause of its pinkish hue is due to the excessive build up of algae from human interference.
Here’s one. What if humans had evolved as the size of insects? Could we have survived over the millennia’s or would we have been wiped out by insects or nature? Would we have higher technology by this point or would we have never gotten out of the Stone Age? How many of us would be on the planet? Would there be more variety of races and maybe even humans that are now extinct like Neanderthals still around? Would more insect species be extinct due to over hunting? Could we domesticate insects to do the heavy hauling and get us around faster? Think about it, humans are larger than the vast majority of life forms on the planet but what if...
I think with us that small we would look more bug like as our bodies would be extremely fragile at that size. To be intelligent though and that small I have no idea
Careful though, Brightside in particular but also Infographic show are pretty reckless with what they put out. Not familiar with this channel but probably.
They say that if exploding lakes could talk, each lake has a story to tell, but few other old stories related to this. ^Ottoman Empire^ is so scared of the lakes, please help!!
I've been there (to Lake Natron)! Well...close enough to see it, anyway (it wasn't pink then, as I visited just after one of the rainy seasons, so the water level was rather high, and the alkalinity was rather low). I went to Tanzania primarily to climb the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai (unlike most people, who go there to climb Kilimanjaro...man, that's been extinct for like, half a million years; Lengai has been erupting almost consistently since the '60s at least - SO much more interesting). Like the video says, this is actually the source of the alkaline minerals that turn this lake into a caustic hellhole - the natrocarbonatite* it erupts (usually as lava flows), is black in daylight (though it glows red at night), both as a flowing liquid, and a solidified flow...the solid lava flow then turns white on exposure to rain, or even just the moisture in the air for a couple of days, and gradually weathers to a brown, sandy material over a period of a few months. Because of this partial dissolution in the presence of moisture, alkali carbonate salts tend to contaminate all shallow water sources (though if the concentration gets high enough, it will start to precipitate out of solution). The village of Engare Sero (adjacent to the volcano and a couple km from the lake) is fortunate that there is a deeper groundwater source in the area that is uncontaminated by these (toxic - at these high concentrations at least) carbonate ions - it exists below an impermeable cap of rock that prevents meteoric water from percolating into it, taking with it the sodium carbonate from the surface. It's too bad that the lava flows on Lengai are currently not easily accessible to people, being at the bottom of a very deep and dangerous crater. When I went, you could climb the volcano fairly easily (it's not "walk in the park" easy, but a motivated person could get to the top in 5 or 6 hours) and just walk into the crater, no big deal (we even CAMPED in the crater for a night - 2 months later, that campsite was buried under 10 feet of lava). Now...the climb is so much harder, and you'd need oxygen tanks and climbing gear to even THINK about entering the crater. Oh well...another 15 or 20 years and the crater will be full of lava and accessible again, and then...I'm there! I count that trip as the best one I've ever taken (no contest). Nearly 3 weeks of pure adventure...and lions, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, rhinos, zebras, gazelles, baboons, wildebeest, buffalo, hippopotami and giraffes aplenty (seriously - even though the cost of JUST the park entry passes for Serengeti and Ngorongoro was something like ~100 USD per day at the time, the experience you get is impressive enough that you just don't care about the cost - it's the best money you'll EVER spend). I highly recommend the country to anyone who is looking for an adventure (even in the absence of an accessible Lengai). It's phenomenal. *This natrocarbonatite is SUPER unique (one of the reasons I spent over 2,000 USD, in 2006 dollars, on a Tanzanian trip...I've seen 7 other erupting volcanoes in my life, plus half a dozen that were very active but not erupting at the exact moment I visited, but Lengai is, hands down, the weirdest volcano on Earth)...it is ONLY erupted at this one location at present, and the vast majority of the small number of total known places where this magma has been erupted in the past are also in the vicinity of Lake Natron (mainly to its south).
1:48 “The whole chemical composition is extremely alkaline with pH levels of 10.5 close to that of ammonia” But he shows us a strip that’s at a 3 - 4pH level making it acidic not alkaline? 😂
They also kept showing pictures of a bog body, which was preserved due to the cold, dark, anaerobic, acidic conditions of European peat bogs, not an alkaline lake in Africa.
The one image of the charcoal colored corpse that was used several times in this video was not found near lake Natron. The bright red hair is a clue to where it was found. That is one of the bog people that were found in the swamps of Ireland, hence the red hair. The throats of these corpses had been slashed ear to ear. Researchers don’t believe it was from battle or execution, instead they believe these people were offerings to the Druid gods. After having their throats cut, they’re tossed into the bogs which have an acidic quality, cool temperatures and low oxygen content that perfectly preserves the human body. The only noticeable effect is the discoloring of the skin, which it turns to a charcoal color. These mummies were featured on the cover of National Geographic back in the 1980s and I remember being fascinated with how much detail of their skin and facial features were preserved. The skin was so well preserved that scientist were able to extract perfect DNA from the mummies to help understand the people of that time period in Ireland over 2,000 years ago. You can clearly see every pore in their skin. Those bogs create the most detailed mummies I have ever seen.

That’s... actually interesting
I think with us that small we would look more bug like as our bodies would be extremely fragile at that size. To be intelligent though and that small I have no idea

Careful though, Brightside in particular but also Infographic show are pretty reckless with what they put out. Not familiar with this channel but probably.
Ted Ed too
I don’t think the photographer was first to discover it the locals obviously knew of it
Over a million people live around that lake, kuria tribe, maasai tribe and locals from both Kenya border and Tanzania border.

Wow this was very interesting. Thank you for sharing! 🙏

They also kept showing pictures of a bog body, which was preserved due to the cold, dark, anaerobic, acidic conditions of European peat bogs, not an alkaline lake in Africa.

@@tjx657 yeah, salt doesn’t evaporate with the water, it’s left behind. This video is just…
The one image of the charcoal colored corpse that was used several times in this video was not found near lake Natron.
