My 5 week old son was discharged from hospital last Monday after being treated for sepsis. Theo went from developing a temp to his organs beginning to shut down in less than 3 hours. We are extremely lucky that we took him directly to the Birmingham Children's Hospital after getting extremely poor advice from 111 (wanted me to wait 2 hours until my gp opened and book an appointment!!) that I wasn't willing to take. I cannot thank the hospital enough for saving his life. If I had waited on the advice of 111 he would not be here today. Always trust your instincts.

I contracted sepsis in my pelvis and abdomen after my c section back in 2013. It's very scary, and thankfully I'm here to tell the story. I'm glad that there is awareness being made about it now.

Me too! They think mine was in the womb. A horrible experience and they told me if I hadn't come to hospital when I did, I wouldn't have made it through the night. Feel so lucky to have got through it!

Oh gosh I've never met another mummy who had it! I'm in South Wales and they say I was a rare case, I didn't even get home as my temp spiked day 2!
      Xx

+Jessica Apsee I haven't met anyone else either! I came up in a blotchy rash all over my body a few days after leaving hospital which stupidly I ignored. I didn't fall ill for another week though - two weeks after c-sec 😣

My boy was so very lucky! He was 18 months old when he started rubbing his eyes whilst playing with his toys we thought it was because the light was shining through the blinds and closed them.over the next hour he became really irritated, crying wanting to be held and I knew something wasn't right so we took him to A&E by the time we got there him temp was sky high and I had striped him down to his nappy,we got to triage and the nurse seemed concerned over a spot on his tummy,I asked if she thought it was meningitis because since having him that's the thing I feared the most after losing school friends to it when I was younger! She said she'd get the dr to check and he did and told me it was just a viral rash even though it DID NOT blanch under the glass and we were sent home.20 minutes of being home he was lethargic, crying this weird cry his temp was sky high and wasn't coming down and I could literally see the spots appearing everywhere! I rushed him back the hospital and they had us waiting for ages, when the nurse came to do his obs I told her it's meningitis he's got all the symptoms and still they kept us waiting! We waited a further 2.5 hours before they decided they were going to take blood! I then sort of lost the plot and screamed the place down, when the dr asked me what I thought he had (he asked ME wtf) I told him and his words were NO it's not it's a virus I'll bet you all the money in the world It's not, but we will put him on antibiotics just incase he will be home tomorrow! We were admitted and the bloods come back as him having MENINGOCOCCAL meningitis & Septicimia! His antibiotics were changed and a couple of the family were also put on antibiotics. He was in hospital for just over a week and is extremely lucky to come out of it without any problems! He's 13 now I'm so grateful for the nurses who helped but I'll never ever thank the "dr" who betted on my son not having meningitis and only seemed concerned when I caused mayhem!!

So important for all parents to know about the signs and symptoms of both Sepsis and Meningitis. It's worth mentioning that while children and vulnerable to these illnesses absolutely anyone of any age/gender etc could get either one of these. Sepsis is a lot more common than what people think and can occur as a result of any infection - a bite, a sting, a urinary tract infection etc. People who already have a long term health condition, those who are pregnant and the elderly are at increased risk so you by knowing the signs you could be saving anyone like your parents, grandparents, yourself etc.

My little boy had meningitis at 4 months, we were very lucky and he was treated quickly and is ok now but when we first took him to hospital he didn't have a rash and by the time we were seen by a doctor a rash had appeared. Please trust your instincts if your child is unwell and get medical attention as soon as possible. I'm certain the doctors would rather see a dozen children who don't have it than not see one that does have it.

I'm not a baby but recently I was very ill high temperature headache joint pain and then a rash appeared that didn't blanch with the glass test so I called 111 they sent an ambulance. I swear if I'm dying I will never call or agree to having an ambulance again. I was treated appallingly by one of the crew he said my rash was from flea bites because he could hear my dog who is out in my bedroom as requested. I was horrified I told him that it's not flea bites I have a cat that has a serious flea allergy so all my pets are kept up to date with their flea treatment. But he wasn't happy about that . He took my temperature which was 38.2 and he did a heart trace which showed I had a heart rate of 110 he then asked me why they were both high. As if I should know it's not something you can cheat at. He asked me what I wanted them to do. I told him I only called 111 for advice I didn't ask for an ambulance or to be taken to hospital . That guy who's name was kevin. Made me feel dirty embarrassed and of wasting their time.
The hospital didn't once ask about flea bites because you could see they weren't. Luckily I only had a vital infection and was told that I could stay in hospital for a day of two or go home . I opted to go home. I can now see why people leave going to the Dr until it's to late. But when it comes to your child don't take no for an answer they can't tell us what's wrong don't take the risk.
