- On October 15, 2003, the MV Andrew J. Barberi, made its approach at Staten Island, packed with commuters from Manhattan. Inexplicably, the ship failed to slow down, slamming sideways into the pier.

Not one word about why it didn’t slow?
Kind of skipped over the important part didn’t you?
This is a thing they do. Just stay tuned in the coming weeks. They'll likely post another clip from the full show.
They want you to watch the whole show on a cable channel.
Well yeah they need money to make this stuff. So they make appetizing vids then if you want to know about what happened yah have to watch it on their website.
Pilot lost consciousness due to being on painkillers. Management was supposed to enforce two pilots in the wheelhouse rule, but intentionally reduced it to one pilot. Management lied about ordering one pilot only in the wheelhouse. Doctor lied about pilot's health.
Pilot pleaded guilty & sentenced to 18 months. Ferry director sentenced to 366 days. 11 dead. 70 injured. $90 million in lawsuits.
This is just a teaser clip.
Most stories have a Beginning, Middle and End..... Not this one.
You have to watch the whole story on Smith. station.
@@kittyclow woosh!
@@kittyclow The woosh is strong with this one!
What! it does have a beginning, middle, and end
@@Crazyarnold12 lol, they are talking about the boat. The stories in this case refer to floor levels, so the boat is missing the middle story (level) because of the crash that destroyed it.
FUN FACT: This boat crashed at 2003 and crashed again at 2010
How did it crashed in 2010?
I remember an SI Ferry crash in the 1960s on a Monday. I had been on it the day before.
That’s a very FUN fact
Dragonfire Productions How is that even a fun fact?

I heard this was a pretty gory accident. Someone even got decapitated and several people lost their arms/legs
The New Brunswick train station had someone hit by a train and the body parts actually impaled people on the platform. Pretty horrible.
The problem is city people dont know how to swim so even tho the boat was next to the shore it was like omg they need special help.
@@greenlawnfarm5827 To be fair: I'd say everyone would have a few problems with swimming right after loosing one or multiple limbs.
@@KityKatKiller Well if they didnt know how to swim before then yeah.
@@greenlawnfarm5827 I agree. I don't understand how someone can't swim just because some limbs were scrapped off their body? I mean that's never happened to me but it can't be that painful. Must have to do with being from the city, nothing more to it.
Too bad Spiderman wasn't around at the time yet
Spidey were you when we need you most
With great power comes great responsibility.
I understand why you said that, because that scene in Spider-Man Homecoming
You petty
WHY: "The ferry was never slowed down at all, and it was found that the pilot "lost consciousness" due to the use of painkillers. This collision resulted in criminal charges against the pilot and others involved, as well as numerous firings and the hiring of new ferry company workers." Can't they say he was HIGH ON OXY??? Yes folks, more death, brought to you by your wonderful, local drug dealers.
_"death, brought to you by your wonderful, local drug dealers"_
Let'sbe clear; the _"drug dealers"_ in this incident were the prescribing physician, pharmacist and drug companies that are in fact most responsible for supplying the opiates and other "pain-killers" that cause vast numbers of deaths in the US currently.
The Sackler family strikes again
And no blame for the person who actually gulps down the pills? smh
@@lucygirl4926 people are a product of their environment.
@@a_legitimate_salvage No one forced him to take opiates.
I remember this. Our Washington state ferries have done this too.
Not ripping the whole side of the ferry open while not even approaching the dock.
When? I dont ever rememver hearing about a ferry ramming a pier here...
@@devingraves8044 This happened in the 80's.
@@shawnnewell4541 ah. I'm surprised ive never heard about it
@@devingraves8044 I live in Seattle. Have all of my 64 years. My coworkers who lived on Bainbridge were given the choice of moving back into Seattle or finding another job. As a union shop steward that got nipped in the bud.
Crazy part was that many people lost body parts from this disaster including one guy who was decapitated and lost his head. Imagine what that was like for everyone who survived and weren't hurt.
Decapitated _and_ lost his head? Oh my.....
I remember when a Chinese cargo ship carrying a shipment of yoyos sank - - - - - 64 times.

Yeah, back and forth..cats cradle and all..
If I remember right the ships name was the Dunkin.
Or Duncan. Something like that.
As someone who worked in Chelsea piers and on boats for a very long time around the Hudson. Most captains drink on the job.
This definitely stopped a lot of that. Regular random drug test and zero tolerance is enforced now.
Well why did it happen?
It's being investigated so they don't have that information yet.

Thanks for telling us half a story,
Really appreciate it 🙄
Read the video description you lazy youtube kids:
From the Series: Disasters at Sea: Death on the Staten Island Ferry
I was living in Brooklyn at the time. It was during the ALCS too. I went down for a walk that afternoon after class to listen to sports radio and take my dog out for a walk. I went down to the 69th Street Pier and I remember having no idea what was happening not that far across the water from where I was. I remember one woman had her legs torn off from the impact and she lingered on for several months in an induced coma, but sadly she didn't make it. I've been on that ferry too. It never seems dangerous either. So nice on a hot summer night.
Great story telling. Thank you for including all of the key details.
It's just a preview. The entire episode can be seen on the Smithsonian Channel. It's part of a series called Disasters at Sea.
😂🤣
I got on this ferry last night on my way home from work. It's still in service.
I used this ferry a lot when I was residing in Staten Island and worked in NYC
Thank god they had a film crew on board so it could all be shown on youtube
From Wikipedia:
On March 8, 2005, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) published a report on its investigation into the incident. The NTSB determined the probable cause of the collision was the assistant pilot's unexplained sudden incapacitation, with a contributory cause of the Master's failure to maintain command and control of his vessel.[2] 60 Minutes uncovered that the assistant pilot was short on sleep when he crashed the boat.
The assistant pilot tried to commit suicide after the crash and admitted he had passed out on painkillers in the boat's pilothouse. He later pleaded guilty to 11 counts of seaman's manslaughter. The ferry director also pleaded guilty after failing to enforce a rule requiring that ferries be operated by two pilots.[3]
Blackout from drinking too much?...
Seconds from Disaster needs to do a series on this
just brought back some memories .I remember it was out there forgot all about it until I saw the video

So this was posted for the OMGs and not to inform on how and why it happened 🤔😕
I think that it was meant as more of an ad for the series. It's from Disasters at Sea. It can be pretty interesting.
I guess they want us to watch the programme to find out.

@@rocketraccoon1976 Thank you😊
Seemed to have full command of the ship after the collision. I guess this was human error then.
Yes it was. The assistant captain passed out at the helm.
This is what i usually do when i needed to stop my ship in WoWS
Just the right video to watch right before to watch before getting on a ferry.
Wow I was born on july 2003, that's crazy it just appeared out of no where in my recommendation, I feel bad for the people inside the boat
Sad thing is this same ferry helped people during 9/11 and the Hudson Sully plane crash a few years after this crash.
Agent 47 Are you sure? there’s nothing about this Ferry helping people during 9/11 are you talking about the correct one?
It was not involved in either of those.
NYC Ferry is a different entity from the Staten Island Ferry.
Never been on a ferry before but I will keep in mind that if I do ride one to either stay on higher levels or towards the middle of the ship.
Five years back and forth on it. Never a problem.
Thought this was a spider man clip from the thumbnail😂
Honestly this just gives me sewol ferry tragedy vibes 🎗fly high angels 🎗😭
I was there and it was chaos that day. It was insanely windy that day.
Useless video - all hype, no info.
At first I suspected the guy running towards the back was the one causing the accident but actually he just knew something bad is gonna happen... hehe
The exact cause of the 3:20 p.m. accident was not clear last night. But law enforcement officials said the ferry's pilot fled the scene to his home in the Westerleigh neighborhood of Staten Island, barricaded himself in a bathroom, slit his wrists and shot himself twice in the chest with a powerful pellet gun.16 Oct 2003
1:39 That acting tho, laughing when she almost dies
Looks more like a scream with her eyes closed to me
I remembered. This I just got off the ferry earlier that day , wow my grandma was watching over me
Pilot impairment is the reason the ferry crashed. The pilot crashed the ferry killed 11 people. Injured 70. Let's tell it like it is!
This was like, *right* before I was born. My dad told me last night. He didn't live that far from it at the time, either.
Lol this reminds me about Spider-Man Homecoming movie
That menace!
It was likely a direct inspiration, especially since Tobey Macguire was still playing the role when this happened.
Same
But WHY did this happen???
So deeply sad😢
This ferry is now for sale man i wish i could buy it
The captain under control by himself in the staten island side passed out because he did not report a previous medical condition he had to the ferry company which made him pass out. So the fiery was left drifting towards the maintenance pier.
In the New York times it says that he was on pain pills and also exhausted and that he wished he had called off sick that day.
I googled around and found out the driver was on meds like RG said, he knew they had dangerous side effects and could make him go into a trance, but didn't tell anybody.
is the ferry skipper trained by Sulpicio Lines in the Philippines?
Not one negative word. No mention of why the captain drove it into the pier.
Spider-Man couldn’t save this one, I’m literally crying at my own comment. Lol
I’m watching this while on the Barberi now.
Kind of a non story with no information or result. Rip to those that did not make it. All in all very poor reporting.
Ok A.D.D clickers. From the Series: Disasters at Sea: Death on the Staten Island Ferry @t
I wish you would do the ‘bomb on board’ on a video, it is about my country flag carrier, Philippine Airlines flight 434 was bombed by the same guy that bomb a US state too, he bombed the plane and the pilots made and emergency landing, only one man died, the man that was sitting on the seat that the bomb was
Edit: that terror attack in the US was the 1993 World Trade Center attack
No one:

So true
Lol
What caused this accident?
Plot twist of the century. Both crashes occurred on this same vessel yet the DOT still lets it move passengers almost daily in 2020 lol I grew up taking the ferry and know the staff are some of the best people to walk this earth tho
What’s wrong with DOT still using the boat?
Does anyone know where to find the full episodes of this series?
A mis-representation of company names. When this video was released (2020), another company by the name of NYC Ferry already existed in NY Harbor. The title of this video should accurately say “This Staten Island Ferry Crash was a Complete Shock”
some people say this was like their 9/11
That boat is still in service
They didn’t stay why it crashed.
Pilot passed out from too many painkillers.
A little respect please. People died.

That "Manhattan skyline" is so WRONG!!!
Things went wrong and people died, the end.
Are you the captain? Captain? I got this costume at value village. I guess that’s that we’re here enjoy your stay on staten island
No explanation as to why. Surely the whole point of this rested on why the boat didnt slow down and the ending to this was too abrupt
Soooo what happened, why did it crash?
Failures found in one of the pilot house control panels.... cracked solenoid rings.
Man that was a clean cut
So why it malfunctioned???

@@rocketraccoon1976 Thanks, Such kind of information is what we expect when we watch vids like that!
How fast was the boat going? It’s surprising that many people were hurt but I’m guessing the people aboard did not know it was about to crash so they did not brace for impact
look at the photos, the cement pier sliced through the first passenger deck for more than half the length of the vessel like a giant guillotine... these weren't impact injuries they were eviscerations....
i bet another on of the ships were saved by spiderman and iron man after it got cut in half
I had this happen one time whilst kayaking, it was bad...
how come nobody else on the bridge did anything ? some of the passengers should of known soon enough to get everyone away from that side -
When will season 2 be available on the app?
I think they should do the MS Estonia disaster of 1994.
You know who I blame for this?
Spiderman.
That would be in legal territory. There cannot be an admission of guilt until court cases, lawsuits are cleared.
Man, Grim Reaper was really gunning for Darius Marshall..missed him on 9/11, got 'em Oct 15 2003 😮
Oh my God! October 15 2003 is my birthday.
Neat
Like I needed a reminder on how old I am.
Only Peter Parker can save the day
The Pilot was high on meds. Terrible day for my hometown. A childhood friend of mines father lost his life on that day. What a shame. RIP Pio Caninni.
He was not high. He was on painkillers that caused him to fall asleep. High is something different.
