The Beatles were best band ever. What made them so great was their willingness to explore new horizons. In the same spirit, the Unthanks are doing likewise with the boundaries of "folk". Let's applaud, not bash. Fantastic
Utterly brilliant! Had never heard of those girls, but then I did on the free CD with some music magazine of covers of 'The White Album' and this was the best cover.
I love this song, but the sound of this version calls to every hair on the back of my head to rise and consume every note! Absolutely awesome arrangement and mesmerising sound.
Ever been in a band Inky? Ever written a song? Ever jammed from a well known classic? If you have then you will realise that they were not trying to improve on the song at all, but celebrating it by making it more personal to them; Loving it and putting THEIR arms around it.
I'm a bit astonished at the number of negative comments that I have found here. Every re-interpretation of a song done by this ensemble has added to the lexicon of music. I see nothing to complain about here and am grateful for the integrity and commitment of The Unthanks.
0:57 - 1:20 - I can hear Carole King. Wunderful voices. Great piano. You know how the things go together. Colourful band ! Wow ! Thank you The Unthanks
Highly innovative interpretation of this song. Lennon would have loved it (not sure if Paul would though). Highly dramatic and creative ending. Thanks Unthanks and come to Australia...PLEASE!!!
Interesting cover. "Sexy Sadie" was the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whom the Beatles had gone to visit in India. John Lennon thought that the Maharishi had made a pass at a female member of their group. He left, disillusioned with the guru, but Paul McCartney still practices Transcendental Meditation to this day. Can you imagine if the lyrics were "Maharishi, what have you done?" as John originally sang? The Maharishi dies in 2008.
Why are some keyboard warriors verbally attacking The Unthanks? How is this a bad cover? Give it a rest people, they're just a small, FANTASTIC folk band trying to be seen in a music industry full of crap. These lasses are attempting to keep folk music alive and you have to hate them for one song they cover? What HAS the music world come to...
Just back from their gig in an intimate venue- and chatted with Beki and Rachel after-which is not my style at all -but thats what real artists do to you -
Excellent version of the song! Can't wait to see her at The Green Man Festival! If you like The Unthanks you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK. Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!
well i was about to give a negative comment but what the eck you sang the song how you wanted to sing it and im sure lennon wouldnt have minded if he heard it, so carry on folks, your ok, keep making music, the world needs it.
dear jasperhappy, try waking up and listening to joanna newsom, jeff buckley, patti smith, joan aspolicewoman, neutral milk hotel, mgmt, regina spector, rufuswainwright, sergegainsbourg, thebeatles, the stones thedoors, theshins, the smiths, milesdavis, steviewonder, sufjanstevens, fleetfoxes, beck, beachhouse, lauramarling, magic numbers, yeah yeah yeahs, velvets, van morrison, talk talk or your favourites, boyzone, and then try to get back to us with something resembling a sentence.
Tell you what inkymoon you go listen to your version and I'll go listen to this one. I was about when the Beatles were around and there were no more egotistical or ignorant people than Lennon and McCartney.
the world of music is not about music anymore, it about size zero girls parading half naked or in sexy clothes in a video, or doing dance routines and miming to songs. And with the advances of lip syncing technology these days, most dont sing live even when they supposed to, so the current generation have no idea what real music is. ohh and dont forget the pretty boys....
@TheVampirical Aye, that's right on. It's a shame too. I tend to cover my ears at any sign of what's popular today... Maybe the era of lip sync and autotune will start to fall behind.
I think people are forgetting something. This is a pretty awkardly shot video in a church. This is a beautifully intimate song, a great cover, but then the filming is terribly interspersed with stained glass window and it's view is cold and distant. Get the Jules Holland version up (if there is one! and if not, there should be! With better sound quality!)
Slow, relaxed and beautiful voices. Really love it !

one of my personal fav beatles covers, it adds a new dimension to the song IMO
Utterly brilliant! Had never heard of those girls, but then I did on the free CD with some music magazine of covers of 'The White Album' and this was the best cover.
Amazing voices!
John would love this I imagine. One of my favourite tracks from the white album. Wonderful version.
I love this song, but the sound of this version calls to every hair on the back of my head to rise and consume every note! Absolutely awesome arrangement and mesmerising sound.
Most amazing group of artists
Pure art! Thank you for sharing

i love you, i love your voices, i love this song....and this cover!!!
the colors are so vibrant!
Excellent. Canny fettle, these lassies and lads.
0:57 - 1:20 - I can hear Carole King. Wunderful voices. Great piano. You know how the things go together. Colourful band ! Wow ! Thank you The Unthanks
What an outstanding version!!!!
Wow. This is so beautiful - this is how cover versions should be. Distinctive and still recognizable.
absolutely brilliant!
Highly innovative interpretation of this song. Lennon would have loved it (not sure if Paul would though). Highly dramatic and creative ending. Thanks Unthanks and come to Australia...PLEASE!!!

@johnabenford Think you'll find the answer in the band's introduction (ref Guardian).
unthankyou.
Ah, finally!! This cover is better than the original. It's more haunting. The Beatles through a Thom Yorke filter.
@FEVERHICKEN how could you forget the Wild beasts????????
Awesome work. Thanks to everyone :)

Well I love it and that's all I give a flying f*** about!
❤️
Yes thanks ;)

sounds like a James Bond them with the tempo dialed back a notch or two
(and karma police, obv)
@kholmes39 yeah we know
Nice one Lids n liddets ;)

Sometimes you have to listen to a song a few times to get a sense of how good it is.
jools holland soon?
Cheers eekowarrior.
Really wish the outro section went back into the main chord prog! Nice though
Captures the sinister nature of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi that Lennon intended the song to do. This is was art does.
Thing about this lyric is it's very specific, so I don't think it works from the Unthanks.
For all the maharishis of the world. The undercurrent of sadness in being "spiritually" fooled.
John and George both apologised to the Maharishi believing they'd been duped by a false story

Deux de tension.
If you play it at 1.5x speed it sounds like the original lol
This is the way Carol King would have done it!

You can hear the accent alot..

It's ok that was six years ago. They must have disbanded.

chill interpretation. the guy who thinks they should use the upper register can't hear how great this is. shame. sometimes less is more.
I don't think they're trying to!
The sound is a schmozzle. Becky and drums too loud. Rachel to soft in her bits.
audio was so underwhelming yikes
a sort of glee version..
Nice, but not well mixed, vocals are too low... also the other vocals are rather dead, you are supposed to go on the higher octave at parts,
Nearly - not quite - but very near...
Respeten la música deThe Beatles por favor ,! Horrible
are they trying to ruin a song
Bad arrange…(ーー;)
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz
wow that is bad.
YES WEAK BUT NEVERLESS A QUAINT VERSION
Not very inspiring, is it? Also, I do wonder why so many female singers these days put on that Kate Nash style of vocal.
difficult to achieve - i.e. ruin a beatle's song
they did it though! this is fucking AWFUL.
no thanks
Very dull, I recommend the Paul Weller version... Sorry, they lack emotion and the lady in the black dress is plain awful.
shit. dont try to change a beatle song so much. especially so... soft.
audio was so underwhelming yikes
