I can't believe how much this changes the game while only changing one little thing. I can imagine gm games lasting exactly the same time because nothing much would change for them
lol wym? Doesn't this prevent sacrifices and trading? Aren't those things like rly vital and important to higher level games? Or am I not getting something here cuz I'm not a seasoned chess player?
Seems like it makes the queen much more powerful. In normal chess defending the queen is pointless because if opponent can take your queen but lose (say) his rook for doing it, he's still going to take. But in this variant a defended queen is an invulnerable piece that can move almost anywhere.
What about pins? If like a pawn captures another pawn which was defended, but also that defendor is pinned to the king. Could you capture the pawn in the first place?
Yes, it can be capture. The definition of defended, is when the piece that capture another piece, can be recapture immediately by another piece. Since the piece defending unable to capture due to the pin, that mean it is not defended.
@@f1reflam3 Pins are a piece that unable to move due to it blocking an attacker, this consider that piece unusable until the attacker is remove. Example is when a rook place in front of a bishop and a king. The bishop is unable to move away, because it would cause the rook to check the king, and the bishop unable to eat the rook, because it's out from its movement range And this, the bishop got pinned.
Would have been better if there was a rook at H1, and he moved Nf3# instead Knight cannot be captured since it is protected by the Queen, and Queen blocks off the only open square beside the King

Good question. I would think that because he said the opponent needs to recapture, that you can capture using a pin because any recapture is illegal.

That Checkmate at the end was very clever where the Queen is only guarded once.
Its a normal checkmate tho. Normal chess a king isnt able to take a defended piece anyways

Is this variant even remotely playable? The fact that only hanging pieces may be captured limits the options rather severely.
Oh, yes. I tried it. It makes the opening significantly longer while mid-game is shorter due to a higher development at the end of the opening.
