Marissa, so proud of you. As a union ironworker, you are the first person on any RV channel that I have seen flag any one into a spot using hand signals and doing it right. Cup your hand and flick your fingers to move forward and then close your hand as the stop signal. YOU ROCK GIRL !!!!!!!

Your trip to the island looked like a lot of fun. I live in NC and travel to Ocracoke Island frequently. One thing about the NC Ferry system is that they run on time unless weather or some other extenuating circumstances prevents it. If you have reservations, be sure to be checked in 30 minutes ahead of time or you may lose your spot, they are pulling away from the docks on time.
Another fun fact about Ocracoke Island and Hatteras, is that there are two plots of land that are leased to Great Britan and fly the Union Jack flag. In the past the Queen sent new flags every May (assume the King will do so now). In 1942 a German U-boat sank a British ship protecting our east coast shipping lanes. Locals found the bodies of 4 of the soldiers and buried them on Ocracoke. After an agreement between the US and Great Britain, it's now marked as British soil and fly their flag. Every May the US Coast Guard and the Royal Navy have a memorial service.

we loved SJI too! Next time don't miss the sculpture garden at Roche Harbor. Any easy walk from the Harbor, there are many fun sculptures for the kids to discover! So unique too. Wescott Bay Oyster farm for a great lunch too. We RVd our rig at the fair grounds. E/W only but there's a popular kids playground there as well as full bath house. Not a fancy bath house and no privacy in rv sites but we were gone for most of every day.

Thank you for showcasing our beautiful part of the world! My parents boated in the San Juans every summer and Roche Harbor was our happy place. When my Dad passed, away we sprinkled his ashes in the bay at Roche Harbor. They have a flag lowering ceremony at sunset every night and they announce the people they were honoring that evening. BTW the Washington State ferry system has been struggling with older boats and staffing issues. They won’t run a route if there aren’t enough staff so they have to cancel certain runs. The ferries get backed up hence the 75 minute wait. Sorry if that interfered with your plans. But we are so glad you came to our area. Thank you!

There are jump points under the hood to jump start the motor. Look for a plastic round disc in center area of the engine compartment towards the top. Then on the drivers side there's a ground block. I was laughing when you were opening the battery compartment. I've done that.

I am thinking about all the changes to our life in my 50's, 60. 70's! However, I remember driving down the red dirt roads with my cousin Rodger going to Route 2, (I think, this was next door to my Grandparents home!) My Grandma would send me over to Zollies, or Zollies general store and gas pumps back in the 50's. This was before the Interstate highway system was built! However, I think my dad and his 7 brothers, and my one aunt Leola, were the rock of my family in my 50's growing up! Thank goodness that my youngest Aunt Leola Overholt Talley shared so much of her life with me before she was called home unto our Lord!

Be sure to drive to the top of Mt. Erie on Fidalgo Island. The view of a lake plus the sound looking east is great. I always thought Fidalgo was prettier than any of the San Juans and Orcas was prettier than San Juan.Doubt I'll ever return but I graduated from FHHS in '63.

We spent every weekend we could on the sound and summers up in the San Juan's. I love sleeping on a boat! I'm glad you got up there, but sorry the ferry system is so stretched. Hoping you stayed in the west side of Washington long enough to e experience our beautiful blue sky days.

We went yesterday and the ferry situation is a HOT MESS! 😅 On our way over it took more than 2 hours to arrive at San Juan. The ferry schedule online is very confusing. I had seen a comment on another video about how they get canceled all the time and you might get stranded for 12 hours! We ate a late lunch at the brewery, which was excellent by the way and then we decided we shoukd check on the times and try to get some kind of confirmation. Ended up finding out at the boarding gate that the current ferry boarding was going to be the last one until possibly 10pm 😮 So...we got on that sucker. We really wanted to visit the state park. I think planning to stay a night or two would be best so you can see everything. ❤ It was beautiful, I love the water too Marissa!

Stopped overnight at a campground that is right on the Susquehanna River. We were parked right on the river and saw a paddle wheel ferry pull up to the boat slip. Our son asked if we could get a ride over to the town on the other side with no reservations, and they said “sure!” We loved it. Such a beautiful ride and went over to the picturesque town on the other side and had some amazing burgers and shakes. Explored the town, hopped back on the ferry for the last run of the evening before sunset, and continued on our way the next morning to Houghton, NY. We definitely will go back.

thanks for taking the jolly trolley. FYI...ferry food. is similar to airport food😊 I look at that flag daily...at least in the summer. It's too bad they don't tell you what the Samish Tribe can tell you about the British. You come in high season that should be the expectation..
.It's just late and they were lacking a crew member. Not sure when you were on the Island...there was issues generally with the inter island ferry. This was a bit exaggerated you would have gotten off the Island.

When I lived there in the 70's I knew well the family who started the Whale Museum.
In the 59's my dad, mom and I would take a shallow-bottomed boat to False Bay with a pitchfork and scoop up crabs for dinner. My dad would put water in a big kettle and drop the live crabs into the water. Much of my life there was spent eating crab salad and hot crabs in the shell to be cracked open with butter on them. And eating steamer clams and eating clam nectar. In the late fifties there were millions of Belgian Hare rabbits all over the Island though mostly on the barren South End. People would come from Seattle and drive around the Island in rabbit cars, which were cars with no top and one person would shine a light at the rabbit at night and the bunny would freeze and a net scooped them up and put into a cage to be transported back to Seattle to sell for food. And every spring my neighbor friend and I would look for fresh mounds of dirt in a field. We would scrape away the dirt and reach our hands into a hole and pull out baby bunnies. If they were too young, we left them but if big enough we would take them home and feed them with eye droppers until they became pets and would roam around our yards.

The red knob looking thing in the engine compartment at 19:21 is where you hook up the positive jumper cable, just push it in toward the firewall and it will expose a post to clamp to and there should be a bare post on one side of the engine bay that is for the negative cable. Next time you need to jump it. Sent you an email of a video link that I created today.

Okay, all the years I've lived in the islands here, I've wondered who actually bought ferry food. As for the schedules, the ferry system is severely underfunded by the state (as part of the state highway system). In addition, the crew must all be US Coast Guard documented, a process that takes a significant amount of time. Thus when each boat is staffed super-close to the bone, one crew member calling out sometimes means the ferry cannot go at all (though they do try to call around for subs). In addition, with minimal crew (which is still short-handed in terms of their goals), they cannot load and unload at the expected pace, so each ferry gets progressively later as the day goes on. If they've had to cancel a run, later ferries will "improvise" to pick up at the islands that got missed. The good news is that they're adjusting the schedules in the coming year to account for these longer "dwell times." Unless you're trying for the last ferry of the night, people virtually always can get back to the mainland, especially if you're walking on. We just call it Island Time, grumble a lot, but live with it.

We take our RV every Summer to our cabin on Orcas Island for two weeks. Costs $320 round trip which is very reasonable considering the price to stay in a VRBO. We use the trailer and friends come to stay in the cabin. The BC ferries are a bit more expensive but they aren't as strict about the vehicle lengths and also have saver fares if you are flexible in your travel times.

I was looking into a paramedic job many years ago on San Juan Island. It didn’t work out. That looked like a pain in the butt jump starting the camper. I am surprised with the battery under the floor there aren’t jumper terminals under the hood. Jumper packs can save the day. Have one in each of our vehicles.

When it comes to ferry transportation there are so many variables that mess up the timing. And you need to have on of those small battery charges for when your battery dies.

I live on San Juan Island and yes, the ferry can be a ginormous pain in the behind! But it is worth it, life here is just a bit slower and sweeter. I am an aspiring full timer and we store our TT in Anacortes because it costs $300 to get it on the island. May I ask what campground/RV Park you were at? Always looking for good ones close by for weekend trips!

Imagine living here in Friday Harbor. When a crew member is missing is because of lack of coastguard documented crewmembers. Meaning they don't have enough documented crew members to run the boat. Btw... we don't have soup kitchens here

Last couple summers San Juan has had the worst service of the islands. . Our ferry system is a mess for many reasons. Orcas for a week vacation next time at Moran state park or west beach resort.

When you had the dead battery you showed the engine compartment. There was an bright red plastic thingy. All you have to do is push the plastic in and that's the positive terminal the negative is a metal rod nearby on the side of the compartment. No need to go thru what you did..... next time you'll know
