In 1985, we only had four TV channels to choose from, and two were BBC owned, the other two commercial and that was it. So yes, in 1985 it was reasonable. And of course the BBC focused their money on those two channels, along with only four national radio stations, it could easily live within its means. Now in 2022, it is vastly bloated, over staffed and over paid.
Great advert at the time. I do think that it's not worth paying for £159 for a tv license now though. Dont understand why we are paying for just one service (The BBC). It should be scrapped, as we have far more choice and we can cancel subscriptions whenever we want now.
Actually BBC Don't make Dramas Comedys etc. That's BBC Studios, BBC Productions that make them. They make them then BBC buys them from BBC Studios. People say we'll if you don't pay TV Licence they wouldn't be able to make and have Dramas and shows. Actually if BBC were to go tomorrow you would still be able to get all the Dramas and Shows Because BBC studios would just sell them to Netflix, Amazon or another TV Channel.
@@agatenby41 I doubt we'll ever not have it because there is really very few other ways to fund it as it is and given in the event of war it becomes the sole government broadcaster it won't be allowed to die. So I think we're stuck with it unfortunately.

Well, here in the States, yes we don't have the license fee, but I'd be thrilled if the adverts, as you called them, came on every 15 minutes. It's been more like every 6-8 minutes. Before 1978, the amount of commercial time in the US was regulated such that for shows on in primetime (8pm-11pm) you got 5 minutes out of every 30 and 10 minutes out of an hour. Deregulation means you praise the lord if the total ad time comes in at less than 10 or 20. And don't get me started on all the channel logos and other on-screen text/image crap. And as Starkicker says, thank the lord for streaming services (for me that means netflix and amazon prime). I am so conditioned to having no ads/interruptions that when amazon prime puts that intro video in front of a show or movie, I have to hit the skip option (I have no idea if it's 15 seconds or whatever; all I know is that I am paying for no ads, and to me that means not even promos for their stuff). At least netflix doesn't do that.
