You can make really interesting pictures of people with multiple exposures, I play with it all the time with my friends, even in low-light conditions. I found an error in the ExpertRAW application, in astro mode and with the focus set to Auto, when it starts taking a photo, it shifts slightly, when it finishes, it shifts for a while, and when it finishes calculating the photo, the focus is set correctly again. This happens on the ExpertRAW 3.0.06.28 version, and when I installed the older version 3.2.06.28, this error does not occur - it is 100% the fault of the newer version of ExpertRAW. In other modes or manual focus it is fine, only Astro mode and only in Auto focus on the lens (Wide 23mm). Can anyone else confirm this? I have a Galaxy S23 running the latest firmware 6.1 with August security.
Good overview but I had a quick question. During the last set of the northern lights I took around 1200 images on my S23 Ultra. Turned out amazing, but the system stopped Refining the images after a while. (you know the "refinish pictures" notification after you take the images right?) Some look great, others are still hazy. Do you know of a way I can go back to select the untouched ones and finish refining them?
Hey! Using the ND-Filter with the 5times lens was the best hint in this video. Together witch my atachable flexible Filter now i got way more range. Great!
Very informative and interesting video. I'm going to have to replay this a couple of times to access and change some of the settings that Expert Raw has made available. Being unable to walk great distances, or stand for any length of time, using my DSLR proved difficult to get the shots I was looking for. I have a DJI OM 5 which would allow me to get different angles and prospectives, especially when filming classic cars. So thanks for the video and I'll be practicing with the gimbal and the new Expert Raw settings.
Hi Ian, can I ask if you have the s24 ultra or the 23 ultra? I'm asking because on my 23 ultra it doesn't have the 'lossless files' update option, and I particularly want that for post editing.
@@Allegro_Giusto I have the S23 Ultra, so I'm guessing that is going to be the same for me too. Any way to disable the "Hold your phone steady" prompt/delay? defeats the purpose of an image captured with a fast shutter speed. And is there a way to disable post processing of a RAW file?
Great questions. ExpertRAW is computational in nature so stacks multiple frames together, hence the hold phone steady prompt. As far as RAW files, throw them into lightroom and it strips away the post processing, alternatively, use Pro Mode instead, it doesn't apply any processing to the RAW FILES
The 'lossless raw' option isnt available on my s23 ultra. Is it s24u exclusive? Will it be coming to the 23, I don't see why it shouldn't as its an app. I've checked the store and there'd no update available.
Reason for this is the expertRAW photo in Samsung's gallery has mult image processing applied. When you load it into Lightroom it strip's that back. You can edit it yourself and it will be more to your taste that way

What annoys me is that the Gallery app changes the RAW by adding a "Samsung Expert RAW" profile, which often makes the images really bad. All you can do is change the profile in Lightroom, as if you didn't have enough work.
@@donnawetter1513Hi Donna, do you know if the 'lossless Raw' option of this update is s24 u exclusive? It's not on my s23u and the store shows everything up to date. I don't see why it should be if it is?
@@Allegro_Giusto I don't know, don't have a S23u personally anymore, but you might not need it, a bit of history: The s23 always offered a choice between compressed and uncompressed dng (if it has much value over the jpg is open to debate but not the issue now), I don't remember if it was lossy, lossless or uncompressed in the choices, but it had always two options, with the S24 this option was removed and lossy compression was forced upon us as standard, this seem to have resulted in massive banding artifacts in lowlight images (dng only, even the embedded preview looked fine), Samsung reacted by returning the option for letting the user chose the compression option.
@@donnawetter1513 I have only had my s23u a couple of weeks, but went through a bunch of past videos and articles up to current with on changes and updates. In Expert Raw there is no choice of how to save the Raw file itself specifically. Just the general save as JPEG, Raw, or both. So the Raw can't use post edit options like 'denoise' in Lightroom because the Raws aren't pure. Having the Lossless file (I think) may solve that. Possibly the ability to edit colour in HDR also, as currently we can't do that.
No matter how I set my ISO and shutter speed, no matter what settings I do, HDR on or off, the result will always be different from the reality. I want the exact darkness of the evening or night I'm about to photograph. I don't see any reason to use expert RAW in daylight. I need it in darker environments, I do everything right, I get the scene, I like how it looks, shoot, but then the result is completely different, far from what I want and what I see when I take the photo. Try taking a photo of the candle flame in the dark..you have the flame in the dark, nothing around the flame, just dark, hit the shutter button, but the result will be a disastrous overprocessed mess that has absolutely nothing to do with either the reality or the preview after setting everything up. Even using nd filter in manual doesn't work. Preview image is perfect, but RAW images are useless. Too bad Samsung, hopefully someone can repair what was a great app!
I was VERY disappointed to find that the RAW image, like its sister 12MP JPG one is only 12MB on my 108MP S22 Ultra phone. I'm the first to not be suckered into the "more megapixels is always better" false mindset. However, it seems to me that there are many post editing options where more IS better. Such as extreme cropping. Also allows for pixel binning and picking the best of adjacent pixels when reducing the size of the image. I shot a series of pictures using all of the phone's image size settings (3:4, 16:9, 1:1, and Full) in both 12MP and 108MP settings. The only setting that gave a full 12MP and 108MP was 3:4. Every other one binned pixels. The popular...for reasons that totally escape me...16:9 max'ed at 81mp's and was 9mp on the 12mp setting. Knowing what I now know, my default setting for "serious" pictures will be 3:4 at 108mp. It makes a file of about 22mp, depending on the scene, of course.
