  • Part 2 goes over the process of opening the heater box, swapping out the heater and AC evap cores and quickly reviews the dash and components reinstall.
    As much as I dreaded this job, it actually went well and now I have beautiful heat and no more coolant smell.
    Thanks for watching.
    Leave me a comment. Anything I could have done better?

    I just R&R my engine after getting it rebuilt, and on my first drive I noticed the heater core leaking. Grrrrr. I was going to pay to have it replaced, but after watching your video's I think I can probably do it. I will use them as my guide. Thanks so much for taking the time to make them. Stay healthy..

    Thanks for the great video! Help to others who may do the same repair. I decided to test all the controls before I put everything back together. I had WEIRD electrical stuff going on. Turning on the heater fan turned on the dash high beam and turn signal indicators. The blower fan would only engage when I turned the interior dome lights on, otherwise the resister hummed. I ripped out all sorts of stuff and spent 3 days hunting with my multimeter for a short. One time I had the entire heating system working until I slid the dash back in, only to have my problem return. Finally figured out that I needed to button up the metal screws on the bottom on each side of the dash to get enough of a ground. Problem solved! 😀

    Very helpful video, and well done, thanks! Most of it applied to my 89 Comanche. Key differences: after ordering parts and opening it all up, my AC turned out to be a dealer installed option version. Evap core was smaller than factory, and all sources (that I could find) had only the larger factory version which would not fit in the box. Original mfr doesn't make it any more. Luckily the core was basically ok, so I cut and soldered new fittings to fit new Expansion valve. Easier than trying to make a new box or get one from the junkyard. Also, being an 89, many of the gaskets/seals and other foam parts were rotted out so a lot of custom weather stripping was needed. Assuming the dealer installed option applies to several model years, I suggest that others going at this job look at the box size under the dash before they start so they know what they are getting into. A box that is smaller where the Evap core goes than what the video shows would take folks on a different path.

    Solid videos, thank you very much! I just picked up a 99 Cherokee Classic and there’s a coolant smell when the heat is on, “wispy” streaks on the side windows, and the entire cabin fogs up like crazy. I haven’t used the heat, the defrost works fine on cold and keeps the windows clear, but I miss the warmth 😂. Thankfully the heat is still hot, I’m probably catching it at the start. I’ve done a few heater cores on German cars/SUVs and those were 15 hour jobs, thankfully this seems way less difficult.

    So I was out in the rain for about an hour and couldnt get the three bolts on the right side in... Finally figured out that it wouldn't move forward because of the drain tube lodged in hole and wouldn't go through. Took that off and it slid right in (all five bolts). I hope this helps others as it is not easy getting the box back in. After that, everything else was a piece of cake!

    • @JustJeep_It
      @JustJeep_It  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this isn’t helpful, but it should just go right back up. There really isn’t too many things getting in the way of the steering column. There are two studs that come down from the dash. You might just have to wiggle that thing around to get it all lined up. And you are right, I believe they are two 13 mm bolts.
