The Empty Man, while not a great film, has one of the best cold opens i've seen in a while. It is 20 minutes long and you would never guess that the story shifts so much at the end of it.
I honestly adored every moment of the film! It switches from horror to mystery to culty thriller every quarter but that's what made me love it so much! It kept me constantly entertained and second guessing myself. But yeah that intro is flawless!
I knew absolutely nothing about Smile when I went into it. The amazing advertising for the movie definitely helped. No one really knew what it was about.
Only problem was that no smile topped THAT smile… Plus, I couldn’t take the monster seriously once I actually saw it. It was much better when it was more humanoid.
#2 was a great reveal, but for me no divulging of macabre intentions will ever top "because I cut off his arms, and his legs, and his head...and I'm gonna do the same to you." from the Hitcher.
I had forgotten that the second "Orphan" film was based on a true story. I don't know if they'll admit to that or claim it was an original idea, but watch the documentary "The Imposter." It's the same premise. We don't officially know what happened to the little boy who went missing, but the doc definitely makes you question if the family killed him and that's why they're so quick to accept "the imposter" even though he is obviously not their missing child.
Man oh man, Evil Dead is doing this whole "Bringing old franchises into the new era" more right than any other property. Straight up. 2013, now Rise; keep up the phenomenal work I say 👍
Whats crazy is that the twist in Orphan: first kill is somewhat based on a true story. They dont know for sure that the mom and brother killed the missing kid in the real case, but their behavior was pretty suspect that its a prevailing theory. Check out the documentary "The Imposter"
Smile won me over with the first death scene because it was soooo unsettling. And lost me completely by the time the birthday party arrived because I realised that it was just repeating a cycle of jump scares and people not believing the protagonist, so it felt like a retreat of It Follows without being as interesting. Jump Scares are good in the moment. They work ONCE, and only if you don't spot them coming. They're the equivalent of someone prodding you with a stick and yelling BOO!!!! It makes you jump. That's it. I think Horror works better when it gets under your skin and stays with you. Jump Scares are quick and then done.
Everyone compares Orphan First Kill to the documentary The Imposter, but Law and Order SVU had this same twist before OFK. A missing girl returns and her family takes her back...and the reveal is the older sister killed the real girl years ago.
Film, not moment 10, Scream VI 09, Barbarian 08, Orphan: First Kill 07, Evil Dead Rise 06, Last Night in Soho 05, Army of the Dead 04, Nope 03, Prey 02, Fresh 01, Smile
Solid list. Man, Whatculture Horror vids can be pretty hit or miss, sometimes. Usually when it’s Josh, though, I can be pretty confident it’s going to be a decent one.
Am I the only one who was a bit thrown off by the CGI in Orphan: First Kill to make Isabelle Furman look like she was still acting/looking like a child? The movie itself is amazing. I was surprised by the twist halfway through. Lol.
I personally loved Army Of The Dead even though it was got very mixed review. I feel like most of the hate comes from people trying to *logically* and *realistically* dissect about a fictional movie as fictional can get.
I had to pause and I just want to say the Mother in Barbarian is NOT the real villain. The real villain in the movie is her daddy. I can't remember his name but the old guy that Justin Long finds in the basement. And I'd say that Justin is another villain but his character is just an everyday A-hole
Listening repeatedly to the end of the Nope entry, I'd swear you said, "Gordy having his head blown off as he calms down is just the icing on an extremely traumatic cape." Cape? You put icing on a cape?
I love this channel but you guys really need to delve into some flicks older than 10-15 years old more than once an upload Try doing this same list all pre-80s or something
@@TSmeowMeow many of the clips are repetitive. Saying the same thing phrased differently using mostly the same movies. Which is fine. I enjoy them. I just think using decade specific lists would be a decent way to add content and force more variety in movie selection than using Hereditary, Midsommar, or Audition yet again
@@TSmeowMeow personally, I feel it would add variety and possibly hilight some hidden gems or films from other countries that I haven't heard of. When I started watching this channel, there were a lot more top 10 underrated/unknown lists that actually featured films that I hadn't heard of yet. The 70's and 80"s were a glut with small independent slashers, gialli, killer animal movies and supernatural horrors, so focusing some lists there are more likely to come up with cool things for me to track down & see that I've never seen before. Especially since I don't live in the UK, so some of the movies they come up with may be even more unknown in my area. That's just my perspective tho. I don't know about OP here. P.s. it would also cut down the silly political quibbling in the comments around recent films' messaging. I can almost guess 100% on the mark which movies are going to have a fight in the comments about recent politics just by looking at the list title at this point.
Smile started out good to me, then it crashed and burned. It tried too hard, in my opinion, and a lot of the problems in it could've been solved if the main character wasn't a psychologist. But that's just my take on it. I know a lot of people liked it.
I personally thought Evil Dead Rise was a huge let down. The gore looked really bad imo and felt very dragged out. I love the 2013 Evil Dead and am fond of the OG trilogy (especially part 2) but Rise was meh.
Smile had such a terribly generic ending it totally undid alot of the good the rest of the film did for me, alot of people praise this film but dont call it out for it's incredibly trashy ending
Prey never won me over. I already watched the Predator systematically destroy presumably one of the deadliest combat units in the world armed with cutting edge weaponry. Then I got to watch him slaughter the local wildlife and ultimately lose to a skinny chick with a rope tomahawk that wouldn’t even work if you tried to throw it with that rope attached to it. They should’ve done something to make it clear that the Predator in Prey was a rookie hunter or maybe taken away some of his tech to make it semi believable. As it stands, it was asinine.
I know US viewers are a bit below nuance and subtlety, but there were plenty of obvious hints of the Predator being a rookie. The slow climb through the food chain, actually getting hurt by the animals at some points, and crafting a helm out of his top prey of a bear before setting sights on humans... The movie was about the Predator's trial as much as the main character. They were both hunters on their first real hunt. Also all the weapon tech was downgraded since it was hundreds of years before the first movie, if you actually bothered watching the first and even second movie, you'd be able to tell the cloaking and heat vision are the only things still the same.
Smile ended up being such a generic paint-by-numbers horror movie. I went in hopeful and left bored. The only really unique scare was the car scene with her sister knocking on the window and they completely ruined it with the trailer, like usual.
Evil Dead Rise has one of the best opening title sequences ever...PERIOD.
The Empty Man, while not a great film, has one of the best cold opens i've seen in a while. It is 20 minutes long and you would never guess that the story shifts so much at the end of it.

Gonna have to check out Fresh. As for Smile, I really wish they'd have left the scene in the car out of the trailer. I really liked it.
I completely agree. That scene was really the only unique and surprising jump scare in the movie and they ruined it for the trailer.
I don't watch trailers for the simple fact that they always put the best parts in them
I recommend Fresh. It was an interesting concept and fun.
Evil Dead Rise has a nice opening, giving a nice round ending... open to a sequel. Yet the scalping scene was done better in Terrifier 2 IMO.

Today I learned the director of Barbarian, Zach Cregger, is the same Zach Cregger from The Whitest Kids U'Know.

Double Toasted’s review of Orphan First Kill is one of the best things on youtube 🤣
Scream 6 has by far new record of "Have bad guy knocked down, but then just drop your weapon and run/stand there..." Ruined that film for me.
It's just a shame that the rest of Scream 6 never lived up to that "Who gives a fuck about movies" line.
Barbarian...is good.

Why though? No seriously, sell me on this list being made exclusively with films from the early 2000's and older only
