This is the greatest and most important video on the internet. Thank you! I need this. It's a bit harder in real life, with a space 2 sizes too small, and your wrist cranked at 90 degrees, and of course you have to do you blind and by feel. Still - this was tremendously helpful to navigate the worst headlight design in automotive history.

    Dude?!? You are so awesome!
I had to change the lamp on the driver's side and the spring came off. There's no way that I would've been able to get it back on without this video!!! You saved me a lot of $$$ because I would've had to take my 2010 GLK350 to the shop just to get a bulb changed! God bless u man!!!

Did you have to open it all up? I was just quoted over $800 for this...

@Su Ma No, I didn't. I used this video to SEE where everything was, and how to put that spring on. Then, I squeezed my hand in there, and very patiently tried and tried again until I got it. It only took maybe 20 mins., once I could SEE. Make sure u HOLD ON TO THAT SPRING. U don't want it to drop down into the abyss.

@@Fraumannal Oh no, don't pay $800. U can do it. Be patient.

I was just trying to replace my right Low Beam Bulb and I had a hard time replacing that spring. I stopped and told my wife about the hardship and had planned to just take it to Mercedes shop. I checked on the You Tube and BANG! You're a big help, Sir! Thank you very much!

Thank you for the insight, it took time, but with the help of some small hands (my wonderful wife) we were able to get the spring and bulb back in place and functioning as intended, great video ! (:

Good video! Though I was in deep trouble when that clip came off. After a brief swearing fit I managed to following the steps in your video to get it back in place

Thx for the CLEAR view of your procedure! Helped me a lot, and saved me from a scumbag mechanic that said I would have to replace the ENTIRE unit.

We used Bob M's video in 2018 when we replaced the driver's side low beam bulb on our 2012 GLK350. It was VERY helpful. One thing I'd add: When he talks about the notches at the top, he means the very top. We thought he was talking about the slots (at 45 degree angles) on each side near the top and we wasted a lot of time trying to get the retaining clip to go into those slots. Once we got the bottom inserted as he instructed, and popped the top of the clip into the CORRECT notches, it only took 2 or 3 attempts to make sure the wire of the clip was OVER the bulb on each side and that the bulb was, in fact, held solidly in place. Remember to not touch the bulb. We also found a remote (snake) camera to be helpful. I still can't believe this car was engineered like this. This is our second, and probably last, Mercedes.

Nailed it... After wasting over an hour trying to use the Mercedes manual and common sense. Bob M. was right on the mark!

Thank you much! Knowing someone else didn't have to endure this makes it all worthwhile. It is worse for those who have to change this on the driver's left side.

      Hi Bob
when on the car to difficult to do
do you have a video how to remove the entire headlight assembly from the car ?

    • @stratBite
      @stratBite  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Robert Arcand Sorry, no. I bought the headlight with the intent of using it to figure out how to create a makeshift spring, and then install it. I returned the headlight once I figured it out.

@@stratBite hey Bob do you happen to know the dimensions for that retainer clip. Both of mine had fallen out and now I am trying to bend one of my universal h7 clips to fit exactly. Please help

Thanks, Bob. This probably saved me about $75 at the stealership as they said replacing the spring would be a half hour job.

Also, the camera on my phone was super helpful to ensure I had the bulb securely in there.

This video probably saved me a couple hours. Just having the ability to see what the assembly looks like makes a world of difference. I would have been completely guessing as to how to put the clip back on.
What a terrible piece of engineering. In my Jetta I simply twist the bulb out and twist back in. I can't believe this clamp is in a Mercedes.

It look nice and easy when you have the headlight unit out of the car, so I did try to find an instruction for the X 204 To get it out, but could not find one except for the W 204, and these are different.

It's not easy. Be patient. Use a mirror to confirm status. Find someone with small hands and fingers after they review this video. My daughter finally made it on second attempt. I had been working for two hours before.
    It does work.
The Benz manual is WRONG. It says to release the clip and fold down. That's when the trouble begins. The clip will fall into the cavity, loose.
Thank you. Thank you, Bob M.

+Richard Bird I lost a bulb before, replacing that right side low beam before (took me 3 hrs), on the second attempt, I tied the bulb using the sewing machine thread. I do the same thing on the spring. Bob has a better video. Took me only less than 30 minutes this time.

I did not remove it from the car. I had bought the headlight assembly separate because I could not find the spring. I found the spring and returned the headlight. You don't need to remove it from the car. Use this video as a visualization to help you feel your way around. Hopefully U have someone with smaller hands that can help you out.

if you touched the light bulb with your fingers the oil on your hands will cause that bulb to die in 9-16 months. where if you use gloves it should last 6 years.
