    Thanks Sandy for a fantastic video, it is nice to see you and your friends out and about, this has been the worst year here in BC western Canada for getting out in the wild. we had 1,026 wild fires that burned 8,950 square kilometers, 10's of thousand of people had to flee many losing everything they owned, a no fire ban with an 1150 dollar fine if you lit one, all parks closed no back country camping at all, the air was so bad it was hard to breath. the fire near my home got to with in 4k of my house almost 75% of the fires were man made. looking forward to your part 2 again thank you.

      That is awful Greg. I was aware of the fires but of course separated by a few thousand miles. Your comment brings the full horror of it home.

    Good for the soul. Not much that can't be made better by a day out walking in the wilds. Great video footage.

    There really is something about the rain beating down on a tent. Very soothing. Great adventure Sandy. I've not been to Exmoor since I was a small lad. I can say it's not changed much from what I remember.

    Exmoor is indeed another lovely area of our green and pleasant land and the sound of rain on tent or tarp is, I find, a soothing part of camping in England, 👌🏻👍🏻🇬🇧

    Hello Sandy, now that I know your name I love your stprmy videos. I remember your first ones where you were always alone, and I think your complete kit was a ratty wool blanket and a plastic painter's tarp. You've come a long way baby. But you know, I'd rather be in the tent you're using than those little ones - I like the space in yours. Best, still camped out in Vermont, Cynthia

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cynthia,
      My name really isn't Sandy. It is Alexander. But I have always been called Sandy. It's a Scottish thing. My father was from Aberdeen:) You can't beat camping in a storm. It's what storms were made for:)

    Love that sound of the rain on the tent. It's great unless you have to do a security watch. Hidden in your basha , warm in your waterproofs and trying to keep your eyes open watching the ground below you the sound can easily make you go to sleep. Thanks for aanother great video Sandy. 73 dah dit dah

    Im a recent comer to your channel and really enjoying it. You adding peanuts to your curry did make me laugh. When i joined the RAF in the late 80s we had a part of basic training known as MFT (Military Field Training). This involved going out to some remote place and playing war and cooking and eating from standard issue ration packs. The curry and rice was particularly good, also had a desert of apple flakes which went straight into the curry along with the pack of Spangles the MOD must have got cheap. (Remember those? got banned in the 70s because kids were cutting their tongues on them).
    Great Channel.

    I enjoyed seeing your friend camp with his older gear- true and tested! Here in the states we can pick up so much used gear for next to nothing at Estate sales. It makes me feel good to keep someone’s camping gear in use, even though they have passed on. That might make a good TH-cam Channel, huh? 🙂

    Great video Sandy. A little but very true story for you. March 17th 1985 my two buddies and me camped overnight on Exmoor. We'd had dinner and a few beers and had sang a few songs to my buddy's harmonica. About midnight we bedded down for the night. About 1.30am my buddy woke me up frantically saying "there's something out there keeps growling and keeps walking around the tent.' Naturally I told him he was dreaming and feeling the effects of the beer. About 10mins later I heard the same sounds!!!! I wasn't dreaming either. We spent the night shitting ourselves hoping that whatever it was wouldn't try to come into the tent and freaking eat us!!. I don't know what it was nit the growls sounded like a large cat and so did the sounds made from prowling around in the undergrowth. It really scared us and put us off camping for a year until we finally got the courage to go out again. Both of my friends are now passed over but the week one of them died I went to see him for the last time. He mentioned this incident to me and said how scared he was. It is something I'll never forget. RIP my camping buddies. I hope wherever you are you are camping safely!!

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was a bit freaky. But I have heard a few stories of large cats prowling around. I even saw a large black cat in the middle of remote countryside a few years ago and I have a farmer friend who has made eye contact with one. It had big green eyes

    • @bigteno4597
      @bigteno4597 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we came to the conclusion it was a big cat of some sort. I remember doing some research in a local library and came across a few reports. It was something big that's for sure. It's well over 30 years ago but I remember it so well. We all just sta there shitting ourselves holding a little pen knife!! @@WiltshireMan

    Ahhhh.....an intrepid quartet of fine souls communing with mother nature in all of her glory Sandy. I like Simons rucksack and great to hear you mention Patrick Dickinson, a great chap and another wonderful channel. Simon it appears to me is a well seasoned, hardened, tough bugger (compliment Simon, honest) much like his bombproof rucksack and probably didn't need a tent so good luck if you attempt to get his malt recipe out of him lol. The rain on your tent Sandy was heavenly :)

    Hello sandy.
    Good to see you actually camping again, walk in the woods for a day vids are all very well and good, but us wellard wild campers want to see you do a bit of tent time.
    i'm currently on a mission to camp at least once a month in my 50th year, which will then lead up to my 50th birthday, and celebrate by , , , , , you guessed it, camping.
    6 months done, 6 to go, which month should i be concerned about the most? anyone can answer that if they like.
    but enough about me.
    its nice to see you out and about again, keep them vids coming.
    Gary.

      @WiltshireMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bad and good weather can occur in any month but for the cold I would say Feb or March can be particularly damp and cold

    • @garyhertswildcamper8958
      @garyhertswildcamper8958 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that, im still trying to get hang of this comments malarkey. only been registered on youtube a week or so. long time viewer though, of lots of your mates.
      my preferred spot is in the Chilterns, about 2 mins walk off the ridgeway as it happens, on a hill in the woods. cant say no more, the camping police might be monitering.
      im looking forward to a clear night in feb/march. the cold will be worth the sunrise through the trees.
      and people say we're strange for doing it.
      Quote of the day for you.
      'i;d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere, than any city on earth'. Steve McQueen.

      I would say it is the mad ones that stay at home and miss out on experiences like this. Even though it was blowing a gale and chilly and wet I would have it no other way. I’ve wached this video before, and if I remember correctly, you’re wearing a Ventile jacket. Could you tell me who made it?

      Hi Bjorn,
      I don't know who made it as it was a gift from a fellow TH-camr called. Mack tightwad. Maybe if you send him a PM he will be able to help?

      Hi Robert. I don't know. Ask Mack Tightwad. He was the one who got it for me. I think he may have made it or altered it.

    That's an interesting windshield for your triangle stove. did you buy it or make it, mate.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stove burner was indeed a trangia but the holder is called a Click stand. They aren't sold in the UK anymore, you have to buy them from the US

    i once slept just off the beacon after doing the two moors way or mariners way as it once used to be called which was a route that ancient mariners used to take if the weather at lands end was considered to rough or risky they used to short cut the circumnavigation around the s western tip of the peninsula and walk from exmoor to the south coast pick up a vessel going up the english chanel or visa versas!!
    the year i did it it was considered to be one of the hottest years on record!! 1976!! do you remember it? we got caught by a milk tanker driver topn up our empty water bottles with the fresh cool early morning milk of the urns that was left for collection in the country lanes we couldnt get the urn lid back on in time the driver spotted the lid was skewiff not on straight and the milk moustaches around our lips!!
    he let us off with a smirk after we shamefacedly offered to pay him over the odds for it!! we felt as guilty as hell but a lot of the streambeds had simply dried up due to the extreme drought conds the road sections were killer from the refracted heat off the tarmac we couldnt breathe it was so hot claustrophobic with refracted heat!! airless!! stuck for hours
    between 2 high hedgerows!!
    in sweltering heat!!
    but it was a wonderful walk
    you can start at mothecombe or minehead or visa versa well worth a try on yer next illegal raid of my home county!! id advise you to raid devon whilst im still away abroads!! as we shall soon put a stop to this disrespectful nefarious activity of outa towner blow in grockels raiding us when i get back!!
    exmoor is smaller than dartmoor but several parts of it can be equally as rugged and the weather changes come sweeping in from bristol chanel fairly rapidly go up there in a storm and you shall know about it!!!
    it has unusual aspects when you reach the edges where land meets the sea it has some very unique perspectives of steep grassy emerald green cliffs meeting the azure seas light blue skies you feel that yer about to drop off the edge of the path on the cliffs in some really steep places its a unique perspectives i dont think ive experienced that feeling anywhere elses except exmoor!!
    its a very unique kind of place!
    has some very ancient settlements up there too some arent to far away from that beacon for some reason they used to start to inhabit the high grounds and clear fell from tops down maybe using the aid of lie of the lands & gravity to help them clear fell the land to make way for subsistence farming the valleys had mosquitoes and the climate was supposedly akin to the luberon in the south of france in ancient times years or past eras gone bye? bronze age times 350-550bc
    you just missed out bye an eon!!
