Hi Diana I figured it out. You get the phone holder on by screwing it on the threaded bolt. And what nubby thing? There are knobs on it to tighten or loosen its position once you place it. I hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any other questions!

You could use it vertically but it’s not a very good fit. I hope this helps!
