Dark Wash Jeans to Light Wash Jeans - How to Bleach Denim

  • In this quick tutorial I show you how to change the dark washing of your denim to a lighter washing.
I just used the cheapest bleach (1 liter) I could find.
My water / bleach ratio was about 1:3
The more bleach you use the faster the process will go. I didn't want to use too much bleach, so it was easier to control the process. Before you end up with complete white jeans or holes in the fabric. In my case I found my jeans light enough after 5 hours.
Note: I used cheap bleach with contains only 5% of Sodium hypochlorite. That's why it took me 5 hours. If you use stronger bleach the processing time may differ.
    Easy Diy Project.

Before you do this, please check how strong your bleach is. I had a very dark, almost black wash of jeans, used a water to bleach ratio of 1:3 and within an hour my jeans were extremely pale and a pretty uneven color. Just be careful before you ruin any clothing

I used dishwasher soap that contained bleach to bleach my denim jacket, because I didn’t have bleach on hand, and it worked excellently. Just put a full bottle of dishwasher liquid in a container, with approx a tea pitcher of hot water and let sit in the sun for about three hours, moving around with gloved hand ever 1/2 hour to one hour. Rinse very very well in hot water and then cold and machine wash. Perfect.

Please be careful when doing this, you need to do it in a bathtub or really large sink so there are not any creases! I tried to do this and there are splotches on my jeans! I’d recommend doing this in the bathtub so you can lay the jeans out completely straight.

Also, don’t forget the longer you leave something in bleach the week or the fabric will get so you don’t wanna leave any kind of fabric too long or else the bleach will eventually deteriorate fabric speaking from experience failure is your greatest teacher. Keep going awesome video :)

@@shelb3658 You are right ...ringing the jeans out then putting them back into the bleach does create on the jeans dark areas and patching. It's because ringing them out makes some areas on the jeans more densley soaked than other parts. It means that when you put the jeans back into the bleach after ringing them out the bleach will then soak slower into some parts of the jeans .

@@rajgobarani6455I did, it didn’t get ruined. He mentioned it in a more recent comment saying it must be bleach / dye proof somehow

I have a question: I wanted to dye my jacket Lavender but for some reason the result came out as a bluish purple (yes the jacket was white before the dye). If I use this method would it just turn the jacket back to white or a lighter purple? (Like lavender)

I’m sorry but I can’t tell either. Maybe it’s possible to try a small non visible piece first? Good luck 👍

Will this work with that lighter, stretchy and not so true denim material? Or do I risk ruining my jean jacket

Please don't do that because you'll ruin your stretchy denim. I have done it before and the result is awfull 😂

Fill a spray bottle with half bleach and half water. May jeans outside on ground and spray all over. It heavily in the darker areas. Keep an eye on the color changes til you are happy. Wash and dry.

I used bleach. The one used for cleaning. Best is to do some tests first, because some bleach is stronger than others. Good luck ✌️😃
