  • Peter Gabriel's Full Moon Club update for September 2023 - it's the harvest moon and Peter is on tour in North America. In the video he discusses the release of This Is Home, the tenth track to be taken from the album i/o.
    Listen to music from I/o - lnk.to/PG21
    Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, This Is Home is, he says, ‘a love song.’
    ‘It began with inspiration from some of the great Tamla Motown rhythm sections so we’re trying to recreate that in a modern way, complete with the tambourine and handclaps. The groove I like a lot, Tony Levin does a great bass part there.’
    ‘I did an unusual thing for me in that I tried doing this low voice / high voice thing, so you get this almost conversational voice at the beginning and the second part is a higher, more emotional voice. I thought that would be both intimate and emotive to put the two side by side.’
    Though he doesn’t appear on the final track, some of the early brainstorming for what was to become This Is Home was done with the DJ and producer Skrillex;
    ‘I’d had a call from Skrillex, who’s a very talented musician, and I thought it would be interesting to see what he had in mind, so he came to my home studio and we sat down and talked and tried to evolve bits and pieces and it was mainly for this song. He was trying to encourage me to write a song about staying up all night in a night club and that sort of thing, but that’s not really my life so I made it more about family and home and I like it. Though we took the song in this other direction it was an interesting experience nonetheless, and I think it is good for me to be taken outside my normal comfort zone sometimes.’
    This Is Home features contributions from a Swedish male voice choir called Orphei Drängar, as well as another orchestral arrangement from John Metcalfe;
    ‘I think it’s got a groove but unlike most pop songs that have a middle eight or bridge this has two and they are both quite different. The first one is atmospheric and dreamy and we have this amazing all male choir which comes in slowly into this dreamy, garden-like section. The choir, Orphei Drängar, are based in Sweden and I think they get a fantastic sound, it’s dark, stirring and emotional. The strings in the other middle section I really like, it’s quite catchy, poppy in a way. I think John picked up on what I was trying to go for there and did a beautiful job, as always.’
    This September full moon release comes with artwork from the artist David Moreno and his work ‘Conexión de catedral II’.
    ‘The artwork this month is a wonderful piece by David Moreno. I was looking for contemporary art that represented the house or home in some ways and we saw a few things but his really stuck out. David often makes these one-colour, house-like symbols with piano wire connecting and I think it is very unique work. This is a relationship song, so given what I was trying to do with the lyric it felt like his image with the two doors was a very natural match. He was up for letting us use it, so I am very grateful to David for that.’
    This Is Home comes with differing mix approaches from Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix), released here on the full moon 29 September, and also Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix), released in mid-October.

    I love Peter collaborating with everyone, but I find it HILARIOUS that Skeillex wanted Peter to write a song about clubbing. I can just imagine Peter turning to him with a hard stare and saying "I was born on a farm in 1950. This is a song about a home."

    I drove from Tampa Florida to Washington DC to see the show because I simply could not miss it. I have seen many of your US tours over the years in the NY, NJ, Phili, area where I am originally from, but this one was the most emotive and compelling. I'm no longer the young 20 year old Genesis fan stunned by seeing the young Peter Gabriel singing "Me and My Teddy Bear". Now at 64 I felt a deep connection to the entire event, the music, the visuals, the message. It was quite the emotional journey and I will always cherish the journey.

    Saw the show in Detroit last night, drove home under the full moon and some beautiful fog.
    PG's voice was fantastic, the musicians were so talented and the art was lovely.
    A very meaningful evening. This wise elder and his work are to be cherished.

    I'm the oldest of six living adult children. I have loved PG's music since the PG3(Melt) record and later had my mind blown by a little single called Shock the Monkey. From there, also being a PC fan, later Genesis, I discovered that PG WAS IN GENESIS!!!! So I took that mythical red pill and have never come back.
    Second ever "real" concert I saw was Genesis in Toronto almost exactly 38 years ago. Myself Todd (ToadeR) and two buddies, friends with me, but not with each other except through me, got on a grayhound in Buffalo, NY headed for Toronto. My two friends were 17, I was 16, yet by some miracle and threatened with "if we phoned your parents, where would they say you were?" by a Canadian customs officer in Ft Erie Ontario, we hit Toronto, had a wonderful full day topped off by Genesis who were touring Invisible Touch with Phil firmly at the helm. It was a fantastic concert! An adventure to be sure. One year later (approximately by my reckoning) I missed Pete and the So tour and every tour since although I remained a dyed in the wool fan through cassettes, CD, VHS, DVD, peer to peer downloads (mp3 and flac) and finally streaming media. Jump ahead to 2023, my brother Joel has this crazy idea to buy all of us siblings fantastic seats for the I/O tour in Buffalo. It was So (pun intended) worth the wait! Pete IMHO has never sounded better. Thank you and all your crew for a "bucket list" concert of a lifetime!

    I’m almost 59 (November) and I’ve been inspired by you as a singer songwriter for almost 40 years, thank you Peter (I’m a ‘Peter’ as well)!
    My grandson, who lives with us and is also a musician, is a big fan and we are going to see you in Denver in a couple of weeks. It will be a wonderfully emotional experience for me in that my late younger brother, also inspired by you musician, saw you over 30 plus years ago on the ‘So’ tour, which I sadly missed!

      I totally understand! 💚 My late brother and I were so close. He being the older one, took me from Sesame Street to rock 'n roll. I began listening to Genesis as a young girl..the late 60s/early 70s. Fell in love with PG at the young age of 5!!! He has been a favorite ever since. The I/O concert will be my first without my late brother. We had been to 5 PG concerts over the years. Truly bittersweet!

I love to read everyone's comments in our Lunatics/PG family!

In the quietness sometimes those questions come back, time has passed so quickly, thank you to all those who stepped outside the lines (so many progressives) and gave my soul a voice.

Of course I'm older now but as soon as I saw you were coming to Columbus I pounced on tickets like a raccoon on free food. BEST. CONCERT. EVER. I love how you make music so multifaceted and dare I say it, complete. Just have to say your band was SO top notch. They made your writing shine. 🙂

    There is a line in Sheeran's "Bad Habits" about staying up all night: "Nothing happens after Two; it's true..." that evidently came from a comment by Styles to him about the need for a touring singer to get enough sleep. They are both Aquarians, so I pay attention. 🙏

    Fantastic! I really love this approach to releasing a record. So very unique - upending the whole record promotion paradigm. Having to patiently wait each month for each new song to drop adds a real intimate element to the listening, as opposed to just sitting down and running through all of the album's songs in a single sitting. The very cool thing is, that once this is complete, we WILL get to enjoy the finished record end-to-end, then look forward to starting all over again when you start the next project. Thank you for sharing such richness from so many different artists - visual and musical! Enjoy the rest of your tour!

    • @denniskristos3800
      @denniskristos3800 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Upending the record promotion paradigm notwithstanding, I really do wish he'd get the long player out so we can hear and see how these disparate tracks, fit together end to end. After all, it's supposed to be an *album*, an art form that Peter Gabriel has always excelled at. Annnd, it's been too long a wait since "Up"...

    • @redhare
      @redhare 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@denniskristos3800 Ah, but this is so much more satisfying! He could've just made us wait until 2024 and given us nothing but silence all this year, but instead, he has given us a new tune (with 2 different mixes even!) and incredible artwork every month this year, and 2 this month! Sure, it will be great to hear the final programmed piece as a whole, but I still dig this unique approach. We can agree, though - it HAS been an awful long time since Up!

    • @denniskristos3800
      @denniskristos3800 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@redhare I'm 72 years old and have been an avid PG fan from way back in 1972 when I first heard "Foxtrot" and then backtracked the catalogue to "Trespass" and "Nursery Crime". I've seen him perform live on three solo album tours ("Car", "Scratch", "Secret World") and once with Genesis in '73 on the "Selling England" tour at Bartlett Gym, Queens University - Kingston, Ontario. So you can just imagine my anticipation for "i/o". I've shot interview pics with Gabriel in his Toronto hotel room after he'd flown in from Berlin to do a press junket to promote the then upcoming "Scratch" album and tour in '78. Guess I'll have to content myself with Steven Wilson's exceptional, genre-spanning and just released album, "The Harmony Codex" until I have a physical copy of "i/o" in my hands. Until then... Cheers!

      Completely agree!! Besides, if he had released the album in January, would we still be listening to or talking about it in October? And if the album presentation at the WOMAD Festival is to be believed, this is the running order, which you can make into a playlist on your streaming service:
      1. Panopticom
      2. Playing For Time
      3. The Court
      4. Four Kinds Of Horses
      5. I/O
      6. Love Can Heal
      7. Road To Joy
      8. So Much
      9. Olive Tree
      10. And Still

    Peter, I was fortunate to see you in Boston a couple weeks ago. The show was wonderful and the new musicians you added to the lineup are super talented. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your tour.

    Bro. A few things. First - you're an inspiration to my own music. Especially everything that appears on the Last Passion soundtrack. Second, I had a professor on an American Air Force base in England who said he was a long time friend of yours. We were enamored by his stories of you. You're a beaming light in the darkness. Thank you, Sir.

    See you in moody rainy October in Vancouver ☔️
    It’ll be my first time!! I’ve loved your music since I was single digits old. I listened to my Aunt’s So album on her amazing high end headphones. It changed my life. As did her Hounds of Love album.
    It led me to your earlier albums. I discovered the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - it’s a masterpiece.
    Your voice in Washing of the Water (favourite song) is hauntingly beautiful.
    Can’t wait!
    xx JJ
