- How are democracies and authoritarian states reacting to the coronavirus pandemic? An investigative team is looking for clues worldwide and interviewing virologists, health experts and citizens. Where is the fight against COVID-19 working and where isn’t it?
Nine months after the new coronavirus first appeared, the documentary "The Pandemic Spreads" finds some initial answers to these questions. The film takes the viewer on a journey around the world: We dive into seven different countries and analyze their ways of handling the virus. We return to the putative beginnings of the pandemic in Wuhan in China. We see how Taiwan reacted to the virus earlier and more decisively than almost any other country in the world, as Europe and North America were still lulling themselves into a false sense of security. In retrospect, it is clear that the Western democracies saw the coronavirus as a local Chinese problem for far too long. Yet research from France and other European countries suggest it was probably already among us here in Europe at the end of 2019. Our viral world tour also takes us to the outsiders of the pandemic: Sweden, for example. At first the Swedes' special approach was still seen as daring, but months later it seems to have gone disastrously wrong.The biggest health and economic crisis in recent history has underlined recent global political developments: as the world power USA sinks into corona chaos, its rival China seems to have hit its stride. Will Beijing’s authoritarian regime come out on top of the crisis through its aggressive and consistent approach to the virus? "The Pandemic Spreads" shows how COVID-19 is changing our world for good.

I’ll never understand why travel wasn’t suspended in China BEFORE everyone left for the Chinese New Year holiday. We canceled a trip to Asia for early 2020 because of reports being leaked out of China. I was very aware of what was happening. The worlds leaders should have been also. When I saw Chinese airport’s & train stations filled with travelers I was shouting at the television “ shut the country down!!!! A catastrophic tragedy that didn’t need to happen.
I'm from Hong Kong, I remember that day when I told my pro communist father. "Many people all over the world will die."
That day wuhan was put on lockdown but 5 million fled the country. Flying to different countries.
World leaders said it is only a flu. So why did 5 million suddenly had to escape. The death toll is near 900,000.
Remember it's way more easy to be wise afterwards. Good thing you cancelled your trip, but nobody knew this would be this devastating early january.

By the way, the US CDC , came out this week with a report estimating only 10% (!!!) of deaths attributed to COVID are actually true COVID deaths. As it hits mainly the elderly with underlying co-morbidities, this correction was necessary...It would also appear the virus strings became less virulent as times passed... pls don't let yourself be fooled.

The title of this documentary is misleading. It’s more of a history/timeline since December 2019, but it doesn’t talk about how the world changed because of the virus. Please find a better title.

Chen Chien-jen in Taiwan is a very smart guy. He got Taiwan prepared for this outbreak, based upon his past experience as Minister of Health.

@@rogerfaint499 Not a lie. You can look it up. Taiwan is not in the WHO. The names of the doctors were Chuang Yin-ching (莊銀清) and Hung Min-nan (洪敏南). They were publicly announcing that they believed the virus was spreading between people by Jan 15 or 16. At that time China and thus the WHO that is under it's thumb were still denying human to human transmission.

I'm really dismayed at how my country(USA) fumbled the ball and how bad the so-called experts were wrong. They said it would trickle down during the summer months but the infection rates went up and now we are headed towards the worst flu season ever and I fear it's going to spike in the USA. This pandemic has destroyed our economy and affected our way of life forever.
Actually, the virus does trickle down in the summer because we are outside breathing air. However... the infection rate went up because people went to bars and other crowded indoor places. This fall and next winter, infection will go up if we stay indoors where there is a lot of people. We'll be fine IF we stay indoor in places where there isn't a lot of people! (ex. a house / appartment, a restaurant where there isn't much people)

Last winter (march), we ended flu season earlier because of social distancing... so, we have a chance to have a "weak" covid19 2nd wave. Let's hope we don't have a big 2nd wave, because it's going to wreck the economy!

Thanks so much for including my country Nigeria. The government imposes lockdown but provides no form of social or welfare services.
Most citizens refuse to wear a mask. If you wear a mask, people laugh at you as you walk by on the streets or markets. Most church leaders and their congregations refuse to take precautions. There are large gathering in the churches with no form of precautions. Most church leaders say that wearing masks is either the way the government wants to prevent free press. Some say it's a means government has used to steal public funds.
The government has embezzled almost all the funds intended for the treatments of the coronavirus. people can't get tested because it's too expensive.
The shops and companies that produce cleaning supplies and face masks has purposely sky rocketed the prices. Foodstuffs and basic necessities are very very expensive. Most cleaning supplies and face masks people are able to get are those produced by students or those given as donations. The hospitals are nothing to write home about.
To be honest the only place that precautions are taken are in schools and a few churches. people who are willing to donate cleaning supplies and face masks and testing kits, please do not give them to government, instead donate them to churches, schools and hospitals
PS: I sincerely from my heart apologize to anyone offended by my post. I do not intend to offend anyone. I just feel people should know what's happening.

This is the impact of the restrictions which was a direct result of the stupid restrictions.
1. I was supposed to go to a cricket game on March 13, 2020 which was cancelled and was made behind closed doors. I totally got the message it was targeted against me as a result I imposed a ban on cricket till 2051 November
2. I was supposed to go to a snow trip on June 2021 which was again cancelled, again I got the message I wasn't welcome to the snow. I banned attending natural snow for atleast 2026.
Be careful what u wish for, they had no reason to cancel these.

So relieved when i heard this doctors timeline, he just confirmed what i have known all along. I also knew what myself and my son { along with thousands of other folk in the UK } had in December was NO, "bad flu along with the Norovirus". My husband and a few of his coworkers in late December 2019 had what we are now sure was Covid as well. We are Canadian .

They are going door-to-door to test, track and monitor Covid-19 patients across the country. It is not the most effective way but works for India.

2020 has drove me back into depression. We have to find answer as a whole. About 20 miles (32kms) down the road from me, is a factory that makes ammunition. Some of my friends that work there tell me they have been very busy the last two years as they just can't keep up with the export demand from the USA.

Two friends of a cashier at a grocery store I go to in the US were in Taiwan during the lock-down. They were living in a high rise apartment building there. The authorities welded a bar across their door so they could not leave their apartment for 2 months. The bar was welded so they could open their door just enough to receive food. Did they not mention this in the documentary because maybe that only happened in an isolated area of Taiwan? Did similar happen in China?
@HF Hi HF! That was a while ago that cashier said that. I'll ask her about it again, but maybe she was mistaken, although I'm sure she said Taiwan as a writer I like (he doesn't know me...) lives there and was thinking of him and his wife too. Really though I think Taiwan isn't totalitarian, but maybe I'm mistaken there too.

Very little change here. I live in Nebraska in a town of about 4,200 people, and people are not
quarentined at all, everyone is working, and even our school is open
and sports and events are being done as well. the kids have an option to
wear mask or not. Some of our churches were closed for a while, but
just a few weeks at the start, and people can wear a mask if they want
to. We have two stores ( out of about 3 dozen) that say wear a mask,
but nothing is said or done if you do not, our resturaunts have been
wide open for months, after a few weeks of carry out only. McDonalds is
still just drive thru. the lake areas are open, the public pool was
open till school started (as usual) and if not for being continually
streamed news reports that all Americans are , and have been for
months quarentined in there homes, not working , schools on line and
all sporting events cancelled, I think I am hearing about another
planet. Once again I fail to see any advantages to living in an urban
area.
My mother a nurse and there's never a day, where I'm very worried about her safety at the hospital. I know she's giving her all to get as much people to get well or cure at least🥺IT IS HARD not to be able to hold, kiss, and hug my mom, all because these idiot of people not being safe, doing the six feet rule, wash hand, wear the fucken mask for crying out loud😭If you really want your life back the way it was then do this so we can all go back to our regular life.

While I hated our 6 long lockdowns here in Melbourne Australia, I only know one family who have had covid19. I am definitely blessed to be Australian. Our government gave us and keeps giving us financial support and we have FREE healthcare. Everyone should have government support esp during a pandemic and free healthcare.

Interesting documentary. My friend (a youngish man) was living in Europe in Sep/Oct 2019 and he said at the time that he had a strange dry cough lasting 2-3 weeks. At night time he coughed a lot with a high fever, very low lethargy and low appetite. During the day he said he was still very tired, but his symptoms were not as bad. Looking back at his experience he wonders if he had the Corona virus. It could be true that the virus has been around longer than we previously thought?!
SARS-CoV-2 *has* been around a little longer than health officials *initially* thought, but so have hundreds of other viruses that cause URIs in 'flu season.
yes, if you cough all night, your very tired all day. have had bad night cough for months now. so hard to have a life being this tired. weirdly some nights i do sleep all night. Taiwan is one of the best countries to deal with COVID 19, however, due to the political stress from China, Taiwan has been exclusive from WHO, WHO should be helping people and save the lives. China didn't tell the world the truth, what they did is cover-up and cause a pandemic.
Wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance is the best way to protect yourself and your love one.
I remember last year, what was there to worry about, and then all of a sudden while getting a haircut in January my barber told there was a virus in China killing hundreds of people, I looked up “virus in China” ok it’s just in China what’s the worry about, and then it was actually spreading overseas, but at the time still not in New Zealand, and then it came to NZ, that’s when the panic buying started kicking in, but I am glad thanks to Jacinda Ardern my life is back to normal, many countries have now actually stopped it which is great.
My older brother is living there. U are very luck. One of my school friend is in Deutschland and he stayed there, because South Africa has limited Health Care.
Omg it must be so nice to be able to actually look up to your political leaders with pride and joy... instead of disdain and disappointment... ugh coughtrumpcough... -_-; also a country full of idiotic citizens that live under rocks and don't believe in science or education.

I was really thinking about prediction of economical growth aftermath of Coronavirus when I clicked on this Documentary but This is Telling A Brief History of what Happened.
There's something not right about this pandemic he think if there was a worldwide pandemic that everybody would know at least one person who has died from it yet I live in the downtown Eastside Vancouver and I don't know one person who knows anybody who's even had it what kind of pandemic is this all they're doing is destroying all small businesses
My friend lost both her parents to this virus and I work in a Canadian hospital where I see families losing members to this ..please show a bit compassion for people dying from this thing because it is very much real even if it hasn’t personally affected you ... you should feel blessed by that

I think this pandemic showed me how selfish people are. Working in a personal care home hit hard with covid. I ask the residents cover your nose put a mask on 100 times a day. When most got sick I would tell them put your mask on your sick and I do not want to be. They would tell me I gave it to them. No I did not give it to them because I never was infected. One who never covered her nose got it twice never got vaccinated. Would tell me she couldn't breathe with a mask over her nose I would tell her people on ventilators cannot breathe. We were supposed to do what was absolutely necessary and leave the room quickly. That went over like a a Led Balloon. They come out in tbe hall way coughing. Workers coming to work sick. People fighting over wearing a mask. Residents told me when they went to Dr appts they take their mask off for the trip no mask in the waiting room. Because it was too uncomfortable to wear one. If people just for once followed the rules it would not have gotten so bad. Lord forbid anyone be inconvenience the tiniest little bit for the sake of someone else. Didn't matter the age covid broke out the worst in a lot of people.

Australia has experienced many lockdowns and border closures that for economic reasons were always lifted right before major holidays and school breaks. Utterly baffling that tourism was held in higher regard than safety!

Hope some of you folks around the world watch Dr. John Campbell on youtube. Im very concerned about the hunger and discrimination in so many parts of the world. We all need to come together as a human race to make a better world for everyone now and in the future. Im by no means rich with money but I have food and all the things i need. So many have nothing, yet others starve. Please all you people with 2 cars, wasting food in your fridge, angry because you cant go out to a bar or an event, too spoiled, share what you have and you will likely feel good in your soul. Please lets come together as one big beautiful family.

Won't happen. Greed is what some practice. Private islands, dirty minds of enslavement of others. Its the system that needs changing. Third world countries need to start using protection instead of making huge amounts of children and then struggling to feed them. There could be enough food for everyone but when you can't profit from something so elite doesn't have interest in it.

People that have healthy immune systems that do not get sick from COVID19 do not need vaccinations. People who can and will get sick because of weak immune systems need help.

A democratic government needs a number of legs to stand on one of them is a free press, another is representation, another is an independent justice system, another is an informed and motivated population involved in civic duty ... the us has none of those democratic principles engaged...so how could it be democratic?

It's basically a flu but all of it's symptoms are 90× worse and it's more contagious

Yea, considering the CDC literally just stated that only 9000 Americans have died from it. Yet the flu kills hundreds of thousands.
If you want to be even more safe, be very conscious about where you put your hands. People touch surfaces and later their face or vice versa far more often than we are aware of.
