It's all the powerful imagery that she uses in the song - time passing, sitting and staring, dust collecting on pinned up hair, the haunted corner, glass shattering on cloth, him sitting in front of her, mascara running, the "wife, kids, and Christmas" image. She didn't put those in there for fun. They're meant to help you envision the situation, and to help you relate to it better.
I think for me this is Taylor's most terrifying song or one of. Imagine being stuck in a moment or a feeling while everyone around you continue with their own lives and grow.
I think this is a song every one relates to despite not being in a relationship everyone can relate to the feeling of being stuck in time and wishing nothing changed cause many ppl especially teenagers are scared of change. This song is the most relatable song
As said above, the feeling of being stuck can be relatable for everyone. And I think that it’s especially the case for people who suffer from depression because in a way, they, we, are stuck, frozen at the age where it started and we never got the chance to grow emotionally, so I agree with the comment, it truly is terrifying
Diagnosed with PTSD almost 2 years ago and this is the only song I’ve found that explains how it feels to be stuck in a memory you so badly want to forget
I like to think of this song very literally. a woman so heartbroken that she literally freezes in time and is stuck in the same place for the rest of her days watching the world go on around her. it’s almost like a modern folktale.
that reminds me of great expectations by charles dickens in which miss havisham is so heartbroken after being abandoned by her fiance on her wedding day that she ends up living the rest of her life in her mansion. only seeing and having scarce interactions with few people.
This song made me realize that I've been living as a ghost all this time. Haunting places, people, and moments that are long gone. They've moved on while I'm still here, stuck in the places they left me remembering them in songs... Edit: It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this, made me feel less alone. To all those going through the same thing, it does get better. It takes time and pain but it get's better. Take solace in this song and take care of yourself.
100% relate. I moved a whole city away to ditch a painful past and yet my mind still frequently drifts back to haunt those streets/that school/those places/those friends that threw me away - as if I'm some sort of ghost. I have to make an effort to catch myself doing it and bring my mind back to the present where the past and future can actually be transformed.
@@FoenyxFeather I moved halfway across the country to try to forget people I miss so much but just can't be friends with. Ngl, it helps not feeling the anticipation of bumping into them or the memories that arise in familiar places, but it doesn't stop my mind from wandering back there when I let my guard down.
The best song Taylor has ever written, just so spot on about all stages of adult heartbreak, feeling like everyone is moving on but you, that everyone around you minimizes your pain - 'breakups happen everyday, you don't have to lose it' -, replaying the same scenarios in your head over and over again, asking what have you done, because it has to be you, he moved on, you're the one still stuck. I still can't believe how gut-wrenching this song is. If you've ever lost someone extremely close to you, you know exactly what she's talking about that feeling of never being able to move on even the idea of moving on is unrealistic because you're literally frozen in time. The world keeps going about it's day but you're right where you were when your heart shattered into a million pieces, the pieces shattered so abundantly that no amount of time could possibly heal or put them back together ever. In my case, it's been a little over a year since my beloved mother passed away but it genuinely doesn't feel like it's been even a day since that happened. Which is ironic because I remember just freezing when I got the news I didn't even tear up until of course a couple hours later when it all hit and I broke down crying but those couple hours they seemed like an entire lifetime your whole life flashing before your eyes knowing you're never going to hear that voice or see that smile. The person that raised you, that shaped you into who you are, that endless amount of love and appreciation it's all gone in one quick second just like that, your world shifts and it's never going to be the same again. I think this song is the closest thing that has encapsulated that feeling for me. So thank you Taylor for this beautiful piece of art.
When someone leaves you and is going to come back someday, it feels like ages had passed after the someone comes back. It feels that way because you wait for the someone to come back. That waiting seems impatient and long, because even though your life goes on, an aspect in your life goes missing. You long for that feeling. You force your life to move on even though the feeling is missing because you know that it is going to come back. So, that wait seems very long. But when you lose someone forever, it is different. You know that the someone is not going to come back. Because that aspect disappears from your life forever, you often do not push your life to go on. You want to feel like you are living in the past. That must be the reason why life freezes. You just can't believe it and don't want to feel or know what it feels like without having that someone in your life. You want it to remain the same, but it is impossible to do so. So, your time freezes just to live in the past forever.
@@sir246 I'm sorry for you too... my friend who was just 14 also had lost her father. I did not know her properly at that time. I still don't know what exactly she must be going through, but I know that she has managed to move on.
I lost my mother to cancer a month ago, and this song exactly describes what I feel right now. She was my mother, my best friend, my sibling, my lover, my everything. Taylor's songwriting is beautiful, it can connect with any moment.
"They expected me to find somewhere, some perspective, but I sat and stared." This is such a powerful lyric. So relatable. People often expect us to "see the light" and use that as a way to quickly move on from a situation, but sometimes the situation is too big and too sad to overcome.
Being outgrown is, I think, one of the underrated types of heartbreak. Imagine a closest friend of yours whom you think you wouldn’t lose, and end up having no contacts at all. Or a partner or ex-partner who’s out there moving on with his life, and you’re stuck right where they left you. It’s difficult to keep everything the same way you wanted when the world revolves to anybody else’s time and you have no choice or control but to see them moving forward without you. Outgrowing somebody is the same as heartbreak. You can’t force them to be around, or ask how things weren’t the same way as before. You’ll move on, too. But, what’s more painful is when you have to build another form of relationship just for it to be outgrown again.
I don’t know how she does it but, I thought that phrase was powerful enough, then she writes “right where you left me” and adds more powerful lines. It’s like she’s Writing about the same thing, and yet not saying the same thing by describing a whole different story. Her mind is a magic box.
she has a lot of songs like this. Apart from some songs on evermore and folklore check out songs from her earlier albums like Mary’s Song, mine, the lucky one, starlight and It’s nice to have a friend
"breakups happen everyday you don't have to lose it" this hits so hard because people around you judge you further for spiralling and sinking into depression rather than being empathetic
must be the strings on this (country feel, not sure if ukulele or mandolin or banjo maybe all of it) and the Em-C chord pre-chorus reminiscent of fearless songs
I sobbed when I first heard this song… Because I was the person she is singing about. It has taken me 1/2 decade to get over a break up. It felt like forever … and thinking about it now, it really didn’t need to consume my life back then, but it really did. Especially when the person left you for someone else, which means they found someone better than you. It absolutely shatters your self esteem, and you have to work so hard to get it back. The lyric “help” - it says so much for someone living through such thing.

This song allowed me to realize it’s okay to move on. As much as we want to stay in that beautiful moment forever, we have to keep going. I’ve been in a dark place for a little over a year and the stormy skies are finally lifting I think. I’m going to trust how I’m feeling and focus on being happy again.
This is one of the saddest songs I've EVER heard. It's just the idea of this woman who couldn't get over the love of her life and lost herself waiting for them... Such a depressing yet strangely familiar thing to think about. I'm always on the verge of tears when I get too deep into the lyrics 🥺
@@preciousjoyjuego700 yes! It is the first and the last stage of all five (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance). If you look closely at the song, she just pretends to accept it because it is the only thing left to do
@@parmesancheese1052 yes, you're right, that is the main message of the song. I just meant the fact that she makes a pause in the first line, before the "no", so it sounds like she can't believe the fact that he left her. (Part of the denial) On the next line, when she sings about the choice, she accepts that he left her but cannot behave in any other way than to stay stuck.
I had never paid attention to the lyrics of this song before. I literally picture a music video in my head every time I listen to it. I love all the details, descriptions and depictions of her songwriting. This is such a gut wrenching masterpiece. Love you queen! 👸🏼❤️🫶🏽
this song embodies what having ptsd is like for me. it’s like im stuck in those traumatic memories and im frozen in those moments still even tho it happened years ago and i just can’t move on.
This is one of Taylor’s eternal songs. By that I mean that the very first time you heard it, it was familiar, like it had always existed. But every time you hear it after that, it’s a new experience 🤍 it’s like when a song is so strangely familiar that you can’t believe you didn’t come up with it yourself earlier
Am i the only one who thinks this song is underrated and should get more credit!!!?? It’s been on repeat for an hour nowwww Let’s make it more known! Just because it is a bonus track doesn’t mean it should be underrated
This song hits hard when you’re trying to get yourself out of depression caused by a traumatic event. I feel like the girl who got frozen, and the girl who lives in delusion. Everyone around me has simply moved on and is living their life but for some reason I’m still stuck in the traumatic moment. I can’t do anything or go anywhere. The “help I’m still at the restaurant” part really hits every time. Thank you Taylor for this beautiful song and for making me feel understood, I don’t feel as crazy after I listen to it.
it's probably just me, but i get chills every time from 2:15 - onwards. taylor's storytelling in this song begins from the present point of view. we are experiencing the aftermath of the tragedy and loss, and in that part, it shifts to the past at the moment their break-up happened in the restaurant. the transition is so smooth and you can hear it in the music, the loud and strong instrumentals come to a halt, and it's almost like you're in that room the day it happened. the music brings you there and we finally see what actually happened. everything about this song is pure genius, from the lyrics to the production.
I’d like to thank Taylor for this song. Taylors music was there for my daughter in a time she really needed help, but wouldn’t let me in. We dropped a chunk going to you concert in Glendale, but seeing her heal was worth it 1 million fold. Thank you!
You know, this song is not only about your ex, but it can also relate to your friends, people who you used to know. Time flies, they change but you are the only one who stays the same. That’s me in this story and it’s a very dramatic. I just can’t get move on
honestly same. it feels like all my old friends are succeeding and living their best life but im stuck in a moment because i cant figure out how to move on or what to do next
I feel the same as well. Everyone I know has a job, hanging out with friends, have a relationship, etc. Meanwhile, I am still stuck with my family that I am growing distant with, unable to see any of my friends physically, and dealing with a relationship break.
This song makes me stop everything and just sit, staring into nothing, crying. I have a very traumatic past and this song just... I feel it, in this song.
I relate to this song but not because a romantic Interest. After highschool I lost all of my friends due to mental illness that left me pretty much housebound. Now I'm 21 and all those old friends are in uni and living their lives as young adults and probably dont even think about me which is normal. But I never moved on from school and those friends as that was the last time I felt somewhat normal and had a life. Update: I'm doing better and also although I'm not glad your going through the same thing, it's also kinda nice to know so many people can understand.
This song sounds like nothing she's done before but it also sounds like the combination of everything she's done before, it could be in any album and it wouldn't feel off
_This song feels like someone who couldn't move on.. someone who says they are okay but are broken inside, sort of frozen in time... Heartbreaking, but that's Taylor's brilliance._ 🥺💕The melody is cheerful but the words are so painful. Taylor is just such a flawless lyricist and she proves this everytime.
Wow, u took out the real meaning of the song, while I cry to this just because I feel like it is the same way in Steven universe Movie the character's mother left her there, and she stayed there for 6000 years

This song embodies the worst feelings that I never want to feel. I hate being left behind and stuck. But sometimes I feel the need that I must recollect my thoughts and reflect on my life before moving forward. I feel the pain every time I listen to this song. Such a masterpiece.

This song is amazing, its as if shes describing a moment of trauma, how a person stays stuck in that feeling, whilst everyone around them lives their lives and grows meanwhile you feel stuck in that moment and left behind
She is NOT a waitress. He broke up with her in a restaurant and time froze for her. She was unable to move on while he went to live his life and possibly started a family of his own. She wouldn’t know because she’s still in denial.
I mean it doesnt HAVE to be about a waitress but it would fit the story really well. A waitress at a restaurant, she met him there. She thought he was gonna take her away, maybe become an actress or something. But he didnt want her in the same way, he left her and moved on and 20 years later she still works there. Never chased her dreams. Frozen in time still hung up on that man that left her there.
something taylor does so well in her music is create such a strong visual for her lyrics “dust collected on my pinned up hair” “glass shattered on the white cloth” i can see a whole story play out in my head when i hear this song. she’s amazing🌟
Being unwanted is like an open wound that refuses to heal. The moment doesn’t “scar us for life” cause it never heals. Akin to be left dusty, alone in a glass cabinet, trapped in that moment for eternity, not knowing a way out. Frozen in time at 23. It’s not a question of moving on. It’s a question of to be free.
I know how it feels. A wound that can’t heal. All you want to do is not feel the pain. But all you can do is learn to live with it, till it settles in the background.
I remember a time when i was trapped in a similar way but I was trapped differently thou the selfishness of others the love I had grew but so did the hurt feeling at the same time
i cried last night while hearing it, maybe because it reminded me of my first love or maybe it's just so emotional. Thanks a lot, Taylor for making this, that connects so deeply.

“Help” damn that one lyric it’s like she’s really stuck in time and she needs help. This girl makes a song with powerful lyrics and then makes it 50X better with her amazing voice and emotion from her soul.
This song has a beautiful creepiness to it like you can just imagine this girl sitting at the table in the corner, there's still people walking around and eating in the restaurant but if you glance over at her you can see her eyes glazed over in shock and dust collecting on her hair and clothes
This song sounds like me saying "I'm fine" when I'm actually having a mental breakdown. The production and melodies sound happy, but the lyrics are PAINFUL.
That’s so true, even the melody paired with the lyrics continues with the meaning of the song. The details are so inspiring. I mean, wouldn’t expect less from the queen of music.
I love how Taylor sings "you left me". You can hear the anguish and denial in this character's voice as she realizes what's happening, and then decides it is too heartbreaking to face.
This song is the absolute best Taylor Swift song. Nothing compares. It’s beautifully devastating & real. As a fellow cancer moon, I’m often stuck in the past & have such a hard time letting go. I will forever cherish this song.
It reminds me of a beautiful doll with lovely pinned up hair andnis the perfect doll but theres dust all over her and no one wants to buy it so it just sits there on the shelf.
I can relate to this song so much... all i see in life is people constantly growing up and knowing what to do next whereas you have people that are struggling to move forward because they're not over a specific moment in time. Maybe regrets on something you wished you could've done back then or just yearning about how carefree the past is then being consumed by melancholy... its a rly scary thing to feel about
Shout to all the teenagers who just become 20 in this pandemic and now have to deal with losing friends, debt, fighting for schoolarships, parents fights, homework. You can do it.

She wrote a whole song on "time won't fly, it's like I'm paralysed by it" 🥺🥺💕💕
I don’t know how she does it but, I thought that phrase was powerful enough, then she writes “right where you left me” and adds more powerful lines. It’s like she’s Writing about the same thing, and yet not saying the same thing by describing a whole different story. Her mind is a magic box.

This song allowed me to realize it’s okay to move on. As much as we want to stay in that beautiful moment forever, we have to keep going. @@parmesancheese1052 yes, you're right, that is the main message of the song.
The instruments remind me also of clock ticking

fr this what i been sayinggg
Being unwanted is like an open wound that refuses to heal. The moment doesn’t “scar us for life” cause it never heals. Akin to be left dusty, alone in a glass cabinet, trapped in that moment for eternity, not knowing a way out. Frozen in time at 23. It’s not a question of moving on. It’s a question of to be free.
Damn now that is deep
I know how it feels. A wound that can’t heal. All you want to do is not feel the pain. But all you can do is learn to live with it, till it settles in the background.
