I had a lot of problems with mine initially. It didn't want to drop and when I got it to drop there was a significant amount of blade play. I took it apart but same thing. I was thinking of selling it. Just last Saturday (04/09/2022), I decided to take it out again. I played with it and then yesterday (04/11/2022) I removed the pivot screws and loc-tited them. I screwed them in until they wouldn't turn anymore and I figured I would back them out little by little. Wonder of wonders! Without even backing them out, the knife was already drop-shut and there was no more blade play. I guess the action is perfect now. I'm not selling it anymore and I'm loving it a lot.

If you're getting a serrated edge, don't be overly worried about sharpening it. It's not particularly difficult, just time consuming. I use either the corner of the ceramic rods from the spyderco sharpmaker or a sanding film wrapped around an appropriately sized dowel.

  • @nopsFU
    @nopsFU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

My first spyderco was a plain edge shaman. I loved it so much I bought the fully serrated shaman for my EDC (trucker). Lansky sells a "spyder sharpener" for the serrations. Nice video skills.

I love fidgeting 24/7 myself and with the cage lock on the manix 2 it’s buttery smooth to flick open without the problems of omega springs. The G10 model I have feels robust, with full stainless steel liners and solid lock up I can’t really do much to hurt the knife.
Ps. I’ve had bugout springs break too it really sucks

I think the Shaman, it’s little brother Native, and the budget steel version Efficient, are the best looking spydercos. They share the profile of a flat back and look more like a traditional drop point while still having the awesome function of the spyde hole. As much as I like the PM2 and Para 3 I’ve never really loved the look.

As soon as I owned a Shaman I fell in love with it. So much so in fact that one of my Shamans (I have 4 now, since I just bought an S30V DLC like yours!) is in my pocket every day, along with my Hinderer XM-18. I even take it to bed with me (in the waistband of my PJs!). Call me crazy, I mean, I am American! But I love the size, big enough but not too big, and the handle just fits my hand so perfectly. The blade is heavy duty, but still cuts amazingly due to the high flat grind. Sal Glesser is a genius when it comes to knife design, and the Shaman is the pinnacle of everything he's done IMO. Some people say it's too expensive now (was $150 USD when it came out), but I don't think so honestly. I paid $224 for my DLC S30V yesterday, and it's worth every penny. It is as good as my Hinderer, which cost twice as much! If I had to choose one knife from my collection to keep forever, it would be one of my Shamans, but which one? Blade HQ DLC M4? Z Wear and Micarta? One of the S30V knives? I can't say, they are all amazing.
And yes, I will be buying more if I can grab any other sprints or exclusives that come out. And they will all be carried and used...although the S30V models will be the only ones going to the jobsite with me because they can be replaced while the others can't. I would hate to lose my Z Wear or M4 in a ditch...
Keep up the videos brother! Really enjoy seeing how life is like for a farmer in Norway! Those Buffalo...haha!

The Spyderco Shaman is a solid knife, but I think its price is still a bit excessive. In general, Spyderco has raised the prices of its knives a little too much in recent times. Spyderco is simply no longer competitive in the world of knives. The Delica 4 now costs more than the Mini Gripilian. VG-10 against S30V steel, and I won't even talk about the quality of production

The Demko Ad-20 is the ultimate knife for what you do. Takes up the same amount of space but more blade, better steel, even easier to open and close, way more fun to fidget, better grip and it is a custom knife for about 80 dollars more. I highly recommend a serrated blade, it is not only good for ropes but for all abrasive materials. I always like the Shaman but cant justify the price tag. if I were to use it as you do then its totally worth it. Im actually really surprised you havent switched over to a fixed blade. Working on a farm the strength of a fix blade would be much more usable for many situations, and I think would far outweigh any downsides a fixed blade has. they have very strong blades that are not that heavy and comfortable to carry. I know you like to fidget with your pocket knives (and so do I) but I think a fixed blade for you would be a better choice. you would just have to find the perfect shape, weight, and blade type for what you need it for. Im the maintenance supervisor for a building so for my case a pocket knife is a better choice, but when I get off work and go out or work around the house, its a fixed blade on my hip. (as most of us i have 30+ of bother folders and fixed blades)

My Paw-Paw always said, "Two sets of tools, one to use and one to abuse." Some jobs are really grimy and sometimes you have to beat on a tool. Other times you need a sharp blade to open packages, cut threads or to fidget with while you watch the torture wheel spin on your computer.

There are so many chocolates out there. All delicious. Maybe you already found your favourite and that is fine 🙂 I have a LOT of knives - I buy some, I sell some. Some I'll never sell. I always carry a knife and have 'favourite' knives for different jobs. For food and kitchen, my never-sell favourite knife is a Spyderco Endura. For work around the farm, I carry the PARTIAL SERRATED Byrd CaraCara2 (also a Spyderco) The serrations.. a lot of people hate them, but I THINK it is because they 1: don't know how to sharpen it? 2: don't cut stuff like fence, nylon rope, the plastic stuff on the wrap hay bales, water hose etc?
I recommend you get a spyderco sharpener. The thing with the two rods sticking up at an angle. And then get for instance a Tenacius (the affordable 8cr model) with serrations and try it out 🙂 Today I carry a old school Au Sabot Baribal 'cause I feel like it.

Farmer E, I think a fully serrated Shaman would probably do you better on the farm for your daily tasks. However sharpening a serrated blade does come way easier if you have a couple different pieces of equipment. A belt sharpener like a little “Work Sharp” unit makes minor sharpening super easy and quick for serrated blades. *you only place the non-edge grind side of the blade on the belt and at a flat angle (basically almost parallel). This will bring the serrated to factor sharp in seconds. When the time comes for a serious sharpening love needed, then a small diameter diamond rod sharpener is the right tool and does the job quickly too. Then just finish off again the blade’s non-edge grind side with the belt grinder’s included strop belt, and the serrated blade will be right back to factory sharp again. I’ve been using this set up for the last ten years on my two serrated Spyderco’s for heavy use job work and couldn’t be happier with their continued amazing performance.

If you want to try a serrated blade try the Spyderco Tennacious its a cheap knife so you wont be too bothered if you dont like it.
Sharpening serrations may seem tricky but if you take your time u should be good
You can get that model with a partly serrated edge or a full serration
And on the topic of where you carry your knife my slipjoints go in the back right and modern blades front right

  • @LegBuilder

get the caribbean. i f you want it in serrations they have it as well. its a good length blade with great rust proof steal. no finger choil but you have maximum blade length and still have the compression lock. i have many knives but it is my favorite. i have the para 2 and 3. i have had most of the models that spyderco and benchmade have. plus the yellow and black scales make it easy to see on your farm. (if you where to drop it). best spyderco for what you do.
i dont have a serrated knife anymore but it is very useful and would take care of 95% of what you do. it would also be great to try a serrated. its not that hard to sharpen. takes more time thats all. i like a big knife and this would fill the hand well for you. it also comes with a sheepfoot or leafshape blade.
    most underrated spyderco knife

Shaman is great knife. Serrated blades are good for cutting rope and cords, but sharpening them is a PITA. Maybe keep your Shaman in front pocket and Leatherman in back pocket...something like the Free that has serrated blade and other tools like pliers and screw drivers.

Serrated edges excel at cutting rope, twine, rad hoses and the like. They keep on cutting because of the serrations. Sal Glesser came up with the idea when he was using a serrated steak knife in a steakhouse. I see you've mastered the middle finger flick, aka the Spydie flick lol.

Old video but if anyone sees this and also is a farm person (as am I) you don't need serrations :) Just sharpen your knife to a toothy edge (no higher than 1000 grit, even 600 grit is fine). It's called a toothy edge because it essentially has micro serrations. It allows you to have the best of both worlds for normal cutting tasks as well as rope and other abrasive natural materials.

Humm... interesting! I would try it with my Lansky System using the medium hone as the last on a cheap knife, just in case for experimentation. I usually finish with the fine and later the honing ceramic, then even stropping on leather to polish the edge.
