The fight to save the African penguin | BBC News

- Every year there are fewer African penguins and soon there may be none at all.
Conservationists primarily blame the fishing industry for the decline in numbers, as penguins depend on the sardines and anchovies they catch and sell.
But fishermen say they are “a fraction of the problem”, as there are there factors like climate change and vulnerability to natural predators involved.
While the South African government have previously tried to restrict fishing activities, it is estimated that there are now only 8,750 penguin breeding pairs left in the country.
This has led conservation groups to take legal action against the government in the first case of its kind in South Africa.

As a Cape Town resident, it's clear that expanding the conservation zone is essential for preserving our natural environment. Interestingly, tourism in Cape Town offers more employment opportunities than fishing. By prioritizing nature conservation over fishing quotas, we not only protect the African penguins but also support the local economy through a thriving tourism sector.
These penguins need a proper reserve to live on, with protected a fishery. Stop arguing, just do it, before its too late. 🐧❤️😢
No. There is no fight. I never liked fights and I hope the pinguins are doing well.
Rhino, elephant, penguin. Such a blessed country, and so careless of it.
Not the elephant though. Their numbers are actually very impressive across our transboundary management sites in neighbouring countries.
Consider context... Industrialization has wiped out the species in Europe and the Americas. Now, African countries are expected to economically develop on par while not polluting or exterminating other species.
It's not carelessness, so much as it is new territory.
unfortunately all 3 of these issues can be attributed to chinese demand - chinese trawlers illegally enter the west coast seas at night to fish; chinese smugglers from mozambique pay poachers to hunt rhino + elephant for their horns and ivory
Nothing is enforced and no one is ever accountable in South Africa unfortunately
So sad to see the neglect in my beautiful country
They must be saved!! Humanity does not have the right to wipe out species.
💯
Thank you for helping the penguins!❤❤

Oh no set up nature reserves for areas for all endangered species protect nature and all their little workers #protectpingu
Our government is not interested about nature, sorry no money for penguins and now it's up to certain animal lovers to empty their pockets to organizations to rake in some cash to "save" the penguins,I'm sorry but I ddnt approached are interfere with their environment and I'm quite sure not the majority of people neither,so no cents from me sorry.
interpret it as bbc is fighting penguins
Save the penguins 🐧
Why don’t we just farm-raise anchovies and such in the billions to replenish the population? Is that detrimental to nature?
Sasuna tsnvum...
Left up to man...Oh Well, was nice having them around! Mankind cannot even Save itself! Disastrous!
😢😭
Good luck with the penguin's!! ANC government has totally destroyed the South African nation. Legal action in South Africa, mmmm.....😂😂😂
❤
They are cute so will could be saved by foreign zoos . South African government doesn't seem to value them
What is this girl talking about? Of course its us, we are literally killing the oceans by taking all the fish out lol. Like what are we even doing? We deserve to be destroyed when we cant even admit reality when its smacking us in the face.
ok but what’s it doing in africa 😂😂 i’m glad they reported on this very important subject 💀💀💀
They're indigenous. Penguins are found in South America too btw not just the poles.
Search up boulder beach if you are interested
@@bvovz pengions aren't found at the "poles" (i.e both the north and South Pole) - they are found in the southern hemisphere only.

Penguins are important but it seems the main stream media do not want to report of the withdrawal of the Astra Zeneca “ thing “ because of the harm it has caused . What a disgrace !

Don't worry they survived the second impact and near third impact.

Antarctic penguins identifying as African 😂 Is this not cultural appropriation?
They are indigenous to South Africa. South America also has Penguins so it's not Antarctica only
@@vervetech9395 Its a joke. Africa is not noted for its penguins. Maybe they flew to Africa for their summer holidays like the BBC showed us a few years back 😄
@@Dungshoveleux just because you're unaware of our penguins, doesnt mean everyone is
