Ben Lewis: Graceful mania. Also hot. Gustave actor: Dark innocence. Displays/automations: Mesmerizing, both from exceptional fluidity to the robotic stiffness as the soaring music calls. Props: Extravagant. My heart: Enthralled.
People like to make fun of him using Gustav's musical talent to identify himself as the father but... Christine supposedly sounded like a dying cat before he taught her how to sing and we all know the Vicomte has no true musical talent. Gustav not only sings but plays the piano and makes songs on a whim. Do you have any idea how hard that is? He also heard songs in his head like the Phantom and likes dark things like him. And then the timeline matches with him being 10.
What bothers me about the lyrics is that in "Beneath a Moonless Sky" the Phantom sings that he was found by Christine the night before she wed Raoul. So if she had sex with Raoul the very next night, how does she KNOW the Phantom is Gustav's father? If the lyrics were changed to "just weeks before you were wed"; then, there would be no doubt or criticism about Gustav being the Phantom's son.

It's also beautifully tragic because it highlights how the show is held back by sir Andrew's weird fanfic commission as a source and his micromanaging of the libretto.

Two things - 1.) The Phantom’s world reminds me of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” music video (which, being a song about finding your own beauty and loving yourself for it, really is perfect for the Phantom 🌹). 2.) A mirror to the first musical I noticed is how, in Phantom of the Opera, Christine tears of his mask and he’s horrified that she’d do such a thing. But in Love Never Dies, he willingly takes off his mask in front of Gustave. When the latter is terrified, the Phantom is upset but more understanding about the situation. 🥀 I really don’t care what anyone says, I love this musical! 🥲
@@pannalover326 Eh, I didn't like the music. This was the only song I liked and it strikes me like an off-brand of Phantom's music. Like, what an edgy teen thinks Phantom's music is. Also, unless Christine and the Phantom made love during his Music of the Night number, them having a kid together makes no sense at all. Sure, I can get behind Raoul having feelings of inadequacy since he knows Christine felt strongly for the Phantom's music and he could never measure up in that regard. I could even kind of see Meg going off the rails because she's extremely jealous of Christine's success thanks to the Phantom. She had always shown to be terrified of the Phantom since he killed people but I guess she got over that. It seems like the Phantom got over his disgust for his appearance. Usually self-loathing takes years of dedicated therapy to try and resolve but I'm glad a couple kisses and a hug did it for him despite him still living 10 years in solitude because the world still rejects him. I guess I have an unpopular opinion but I thought the acting was trash and campy. Coupled with the bad music and bad dialogue, I was suffering while trying to watch it for the first time.

the fact that Ben Lewis has to push around those things with the people inside of them WHILE singing never ceases to amaze me
How does it feel like to have that kind of talent/skill in a very young age? WOW
Such a prodigy!
Unless nurtured, it can lead to greatness. If not then you'll go the way of Mozart...
I say Mozart because while musically talented, he is not the best dad and husband when he grew up. The dude still wrote rather crude scat jokes in his correspondence with his sister and didn't have a stable income despite being a famous composer due to his... Immaturity...

Big Deal When I was 10 I did 4 Productions in 1 Year, 1 of them was CATS, he's just like his mother.
It’s implied in the book and the Yeston/Kopit adaptations that she has a beautiful but untrained voice. But yeah, she wasn’t really a musical genius
@@karenpinson759 sometimes a mother just knows. If this was real, she probably would notice a resemblance to him as well.
Christine was good enough at singing to attract the Phantom's attention in the first place. And her father was musically talented as well.

@@svitlana5183 nah. The original stage production is really meant to be simple and unextravagant considering how they can reveal their emotions through their faces. The only reason why they had the Tango during the scene was because they want to show the viewers how sexually suggestive the song is (a bit odd considering how the lyrics are really suggestive on their own) while in the play it's much more easily understood through the expressions.

I love this song. I didn't even know that a sequel existed until they showed it a while ago. I bought the 25th anniversary and love never dies.
The show itself may not be great, but this song is pretty epic to listen to, and that kid has got TALENT!!
Wait... so Gustave just saw and was cool about a skeleton horse riding a human, children of the corn, literally the devil himself............but he can’t take a deformed face!
I get it Erik should warn people when he takes his mask off. No disrespect. BUT GUSTAVE COME ON!! 😂
He kinda ripped it off tho, if she did it slowly I would have been less nervous
Gustave Daaé He did it pretty slowly there, in my opinion
I was thinking the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!
I call the corn children egg-babies. 😂
Gustave needs to set his priorities straight
I really LOVE to see Erik holds Gustave's hand and guides him happily...
I find this song beautifully tragic because the fast pace of it reflects Erik's excitement at the thought of someone accepting him for who he is underneath his mask and the sudden end to the song follows the end of his hope of that. Beautiful.
It's also beautifully tragic because it highlights how the show is held back by sir Andrew's weird fanfic commission as a source and his micromanaging of the libretto.
The kid in this production is just so good! Why doesn't anyone acknowledge that.. ?
My class in junior year collectively watched this for Physical Ed extra credit and always randomly sang this exact song till we graduated JHS. This song holds so many precious memories of me trying to reach the high notes with classmates I never would have been close to otherwise.
There will come a day where I will blast this song and it can be heard from the street outside my home.
Ben lewis as the phantom
So many great Phantoms, but he looks the part, he's tall and pale and when performing the phantom he has a great mysterious aura thing going on that I think is great. While also humanizing the character.

@@catherinem.426 I always love how calm and composed Erik in contrast with Raoul
Two things -
1.) The Phantom’s world reminds me of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” music video (which, being a song about finding your own beauty and loving yourself for it, really is perfect for the Phantom 🌹).
I really don’t care what anyone says, I love this musical! 🥲
I love it too. I don't get all the hate. What do people think can happen in 10 years time? The characters all changed. That's how life goes.
1] The way Erik holds Gustav's hand is really sweet. It's easy to imagine how devoted of a father he would've been in those missing "ten long years", and the one he probably became after the events of this story.
2] That little "ahhh" Gustav does part-way into the song reminds me of his mother's bit in the title track for "Phantom". It had to be intentional.

The best part of this song is Ben Lewis' performance it is he is definitely having the time preforming this amazing song

this is genuinely the only song that stood out to me in this whole musical
Same. I kept hearing how great the music was but this was the only one I liked. All the others just sounded like generic "sing REALLY high" music. And I swear I kept hearing Tim Burton in some of the music and bits of another song I can't quite place.
OMG!!! When I first saw it, I had chills. This is my "again, again, again" 😁 That's good as hell! ... rock / metal / gothic sound. Webber is moster genius 🥰 Ben Lewis is badass here 🤟 Love it!!! LND is complete briliant.
Acc to the story he actually accepts it and strokes the burn mark (?) with affection and the phantom is overwhelmed by the acceptance and says "You are very much like your mother" because Christine once did the same. In the musical they made Gustav fear it for the dramatic essence that a musical has. Sad she had to die though. Would have loved happily ever after.
EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT!! MORE PHANTOM 😍
