  • Ruffed Grouse & Woodcock hunting this time of year brings challenges of warm weather and thick cover that can make getting shots on birds a humbling experience. Join us for a few days of hunting as we chase the king in early October. Before this trip I picked up a new shotgun to hunt with this fall, a Weatherby Orion Side by Side. At the end of the video I talk more about the new scatter gun, the chokes I'm using and the ammo I'm shooting this time of year!

    This is so great! It's cool to see you hunting with your wife! My wife has always loved when I bring home Duskies when I'm up archery hunting here in Colorado, so I finally convinced her to get a bird dog, and she's stoked to join me for upland hunting now! It's the best.

    Aspen was our best Golden's name too! Absolutely the best pheasant dog I've ever seen! Your woods are way to tight for us; we're in Washington, east of the Cascade crest, so it's much more open-ponderosa pines and such. Blue grouse country. Orion's a nice gun, but a little long for my tastes. I do like the ability to change chokes though. My Uplander's F& F, but as I said, it's a lot more open where I hunt. I use a .410, and I'll load with #8s on one tube, and 71/2 or 6's in the other.

    I have shot a sis for many many years. I truly love them. 28" is a great choice. I don't especially like extractors as it takes my eye off of where the bird is or was. I like both double or single triggers. Double triggers I understand are a bit more reliable. I also prefer English style stock. I shoot a Winchester 23. In the past owned a Beretta Model 410E. Your videos are great and your dogs are wonderful. I live in the south west but have family in or near Traverse city Mi. Quail is the game here as you know.

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can really see why a dedicated quail hunter would prefer ejectors! A lot of times parts of the covey are taking off at different times. Really don’t have that when ruff grouse or even pheasant hunting. Best of luck this year, I know your guys season is getting ready to open shortly!

      12 days and counting. We had much rain and the amount of birds is be crazy! I also had a CZ Bobwhite for awhile and loved it. Very reasonable and a pleasure to shoot. I picked up a Benelli Montefeltro this year and looking forward to shooting it. Except looking for shell casings. Have a great season and I look forward to your video's.@@UplanderLifestyle

    Good to see a few birds. Headed back to MI end of the week, hope to get a few myself. Agree 100% on shells, Grouse are such a delicate bird it doesn't take much to bring them down. Give me more shot every time!! Another reason I like an O/U or side by side, they tend to be a little shorter than a pump or semi auto, easier to swing through all the brush.

    Nice video... Love the double triggers; biggest advantage is immediate barrel selection when hunting more open ground (i.e. pheasant jumps up long, go right to the tighter choke with bigger shot). Me... Especially for upland hunting, I vastly prefer ejectors; Hold my hand over the chamber, shells pop right into my hand and I can load quicker.

    I really enjoyed your video. Love watching your dogs work. I like the sight picture that you get down a side-by-side as well. But as it turns out my browning Citoris are over under and seem to be the ones I grab when I go out the door. I have a 12 gauge sporting hunter with a 28 inch barrel but my favorite Grouse gun is an upland special in 20 gauge with a 24 inch barrel. It has an English stock just like your Weatherby. I have to disagree with you on some of the shot size thing. Not completely. But the bit about smaller shot making it through leaves. What pushes shot through leaves is energy and larger shot has more energy at the same speed than smaller pellets. For the same reason that you shoot pheasants with number six shot. Heavier shot penetrates better, whether it's pheasants or leaves. On the other hand. I completely agree with you that Grouse and Woodcock are fairly fragile birds and you don't need a lot of power when you hit them. But they are smaller birds and they are fast so what you do need is a shot pattern that doesn't have holes in it. I definitely go with 7 1/2's or eights for Grouse and Woodcock. Once again, I really enjoyed your video and I love watching you shoot.

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on! Great to hear from you, I appreciate the comment 👍🏻 we’ll agree to disagree on the shot size. Larger shot has great energy before it hits its target, absolutely, more than smaller shot does. But we’re talking about the energy that the shot has left after it goes through something. Physics says the larger shot will loose more energy after going through something than a smaller shot, based on surface area. So yes, lager shot will impact harder on its first target, but will have less energy going through something towards the next one than smaller size will. I’ll take the shot that has more energy to hit an object after it’s been through foliage, which smaller shot produces. Thanks again for following along! Best of luck this season 👍🏻

    Hunting birds with dogs is something I have little experience in. Where I am from, most do all of their grouse hunting riding trails and driving roads. is the density of grouse in your area the reason why our hunting strategies are different? Or do road/trail hunters make up the majority of grouse hunters where you are from as well?

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks a lot! I do like the dogs being silent without the bells. The biggest thing is I just got tired of listening to the bell. After a day of hunting all I hear in my head for the next 12 hours is that bell ringing, I can only image what happens to my dogs hearing because of it. They respond much faster to me when they don’t have a bell on, probably because they can hear me clearly.

    Hi, Thank you for an excellent understanding of the rough grouse, which would be the equivalent of woodcock hunting in Europe.
    I would like to help you out regarding using a s/s with proper snap shooting.
    1- Barrels are kept level at all times, there is no rising, in ONE move the stock is at our shoulder, and as our left thumb is pointing in the direction we want, we fire immediately. There is no looking. it is done. This is the basis of the EJ Churchill method , who wrote "Game Shooting" you simply lean in to the stock, with your weight on your left leg. Keep both eyes open.
    2-You should not even be aware of the rib ,or the bead, to use as a sight, you left thumb has already done that for you. So you are too high every time. For instinct shooting your eyes need to be ONLY on the bird. Try on a large cardboard at 30 yards.
    3-Look for an AYA xxv 12G s/s (25" barrels) designed by- EJ Churchill for woodcock! Spanish, very well designed, made. Churchill rib.Small money used, nowdays. Get it fitted. For all game.
    4--Consider using some cartridges on cardboard to see how far out your gunfit is, and read up on it. Eye dominance, stock cast etc.
    5- Becasse- see tube videos in France with setters hunting woodcock (becasse). Some use a Baby Bretton 12g, others 26" s/s 12G.
    Hope this helps, excellent dog, not overtrained, good bond.Bye.

    I shoot an over under but now I need a side by side. The view to the bead looks much more intuitive on a sxs.

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t think it would be an easy transition for me when I first started shooting one. But your eyes are just naturally drawn to the bead centered between the two barrels, making it really fast to get on target. Good luck out there 👍🏻
