I had a friend that used to read magazines while pumping. So when I had to pump a year later I watched things on my phone. It didn't work, it was painful. One day I tried thinking of my baby. Second later, MILK! So I filmed him nursing and I'd put that film on and it was always immediate. Fffsssttt that little satisfying noise 😂

I've done that too! I made sure that the angle was taping exactly how I would look at her while nursing.

I’m so happy with how real you are about this. FEEDING a baby is hard. And you WILL feel like you’re inconveniencing someone at work when you’re taking the time to pump. Thank you for normalizing these feelings.

    6. If you are pumping in an office with a window, pay attention to when the window washers are coming, 😂 . #awkward
I pumped 18 months for each of my 3 kids. Your advice is spot on.
I liked pumping while covered, even in my private office. I think I needed the breasts to be a little warmer in order to have a good milk letdown.
Because I’m an analyst, I kept a record of the money I saved by pumping. That cash paid for a deep freezer, two good quality breast pumps, accessories and a lot of money left over.
I’m so glad today’s moms have so many more resources supporting them. My kiddo was the first breastfed baby at her daycare, and I spent a ton of time educating her carers about breastmilk.

Wait a darn minute! I did not know I could throw all the pump parts in a bag in the fridge so I didn't have to wash it each time. That takes me like 10 or more mins each time to just clean the parts. Right there is something that is a huge tip that will help me. Thank you. Why haven't I ever heard that after 3 kids and on my 4th now?

Momma2thewilds you’re technically supposed to fully clean and dry between uses but it really isn’t a big deal to use this “hack”!

Look into the Medela steaming bags!! They are reusable, you can store them in there and then after a quick wash, you can add a bit of water, throw them in the microwave and voila! Your stuff is sanitized! Honestly, lifesaver for first baby and definitely in my registry for this upcoming one!

Number 5 😭😭😭 That made me cry because that is what I needed to hear 2 years ago when I stopped breastfeeding at 3 weeks Postpartum because it was a disaster (nearly hospitalized from mastitis, then supply issues and pretty much every issue in the book!). It took me a long time to feel okay, I always wondered if I tried "hard enough". Big hugs and thanks for the video for when I try breastfeeding and pumping next time!

I didn't have many issues, I just never produced enough... and when I got back to work gave up because I couldn't be brave enough to pump at work since I had no idea where to begin with the logistics of it. To this day I also wonder if I tried "hard enough".... but on the good side, now with my second I am... and as little or as much breast milk I produce I am grateful and happy that to be able to do it!

So #5.. you keep loving women with this message. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my 3rd baby that their pediatrician said, it's ok if you do formula. She saw me struggle to get a supply from day 1. I am few that have little to no supply. U would collect my pumpings all day from a hospital grade pump and only be able to feed my baby 2 or 4 oz.. then with my second I knew what to do, I pumped and pumped and did SNS for 6 weeks until I went dry. 2 weeks longer then my first but the worst of both worlds. Pumping for scraps. Filling my sns tl, tapeing it my nipple just right.. latching and again , re positioning the tape and tube. Over and over. In the day, in the night, 2 am... you get it. My 3rd was coming and I craved something more natural. I already knew I couldn't sustain him. I did the bump and collect with my first, the sns with my second and I just wanted to have my breastfeeding story finally with my baby. My pediatrician said just go ahead with formula. I did have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, but I wanted to HEAL. I loved breast feeding. That's all I ever imagine or wanted for my babies. But my body let me down. So for my 3rd, a boy, i breast fed him. No tubes, no tape, no measuring. It was glorious. It was everything I ever wanted. I fed him from a bottle after for his " real meal " .. at the time I called my feedings his appetizer. And THat let me heal from how my body failed. I hope more mamas see this and know they aren't alone

This made me tear up. I also have low supply as a 40 year old mom with hypothyroidism and I’ll pump and pump and come up with 1 oz...
I tried the tube with my lactation consultant and I knew I would not be able to do that- you have my respect!
I’m so glad you healed and are able to accept and enjoy your breastfeeding journey with baby no. 3

I'm so happy you talked about number 5. I had my first baby at 20 and I was so depressed and felt like I couldn't do anything right because from day one the hospital gave her formula and wouldn't give me a pump to use and I was too young and anxious to advocate for myself. I went to a lactation consultant after we were discharged from the hospital but she struggled to latch and we made it 3 solid months before my supply dwindled to where I had to supplement formula. I was so heartbroken and felt like I was a failure because I had planned to breast feed for at least a year. My husband talked me into going to the doctor for my anxiety and depression and worked with me on affirmations for myself and I'm in such a better state of mind now. He taught me that 3 months of breast milk was better than no breast milk and that I tried my hardest. Thank you for informing everyone and being everyone's advocate because not everyone has such a strong support system. 🥰 You're awesome!

I know this video has been out for a while but I keep coming back to watch it specifically because of the last tip. I am SO glad you included the tip to be kind and change plans if needed because so many people forget that not every woman is able to breastfeed their baby, whether by nursing, pumping, or both. There’s this knee-jerk reaction a lot of the times where people feel that women that don’t are lazy, incompetent, and doing a disservice to their child and I HATE that.
I had grandiose plans of breastfeeding and I went into it completely rose-eyed and ignorant of that fact that it doesn’t always work. Flat nipples and a poor latch made nursing impossible and had me in TEARS. Switching to pumping saw me not even producing enough milk. Hence my baby has been getting formula since day one with only a few bottles of bm to at least give her some. But the down side to that is I have literally driven myself to exhaustion and pure guilt. Pumping constantly is a PAIN. Having to watch my baby play with my sisters instead of me because I have to pump. Getting up in the middle of the night because I have to pump. Waking up too early now that I’m back to work because I have to pump. All because there is this overwhelming judgement that if I stop, I’m harming my baby in some way. Forget the fact that I am exhausted and stressed and generally feeling discombobulated with all the OTHER things I have to do that pumping keeps me away from so many times throughout the day.
My baby is 6 months, my supply is down to where it’s only enough for one bottle a day and I am just so done. The only thing that made me even keep going was more because of this “BREASTFEED ONLY OMG NO FORMULA NO” nonsense rather than a genuine want. I need to be there for my baby and being stressed because breastfeeding plans didn’t work is not the way to do it.
So thank you for advocating for that. So many other videos overlook the fact that it doesn’t work out for some women and make it seem as though pumping is the only alternative when it isn’t. So just - thank you.

I work at a gas station and usually work alone for the first 5-6 hours of my shift so there is literally no time for me to go somewhere and pump because im the only person there to help customers. I bought a freemie pump in the hopes I can wear it and pump while I help my customers... Im still stressing about it as returning to work is what was the beginning of the end of my breastfeeding journey with my first. I really hope I can make it work this go.

I've been buying things that will make it easier but we have almost made it to 1 year EXCLUSIVELY pumping and supplementing. I even bought the Willow but the learning curve is a whole nother beast.

I’m so happy I came across this video! As an L&D nurse, I’m typically only with mom and baby for an hour, maybe 2, unless it’s a mag delivery... and so many moms get upset if baby doesn’t just latch right on at 15 minutes of life... and I have to remind mom that this is all new. It’s new to mom, it’s new to baby, and everyone is learning! Thankfully we have some amazing nurses and lactation consultants on our post partum side that work with mom and baby (dad, too, if he wants to help out) and get everyone on a great schedule!! But... I’m glad to share this video with them, too, so they have good info for their future nursing/pumping plans!!

Oh man, I wish I had all this awesome advice 5 months ago when I first started pumping! Through trial and error I’ve been doing things the same way - refrigerating the parts, using the bags, the hands free bra.
The most difficult thing for me is sticking to my schedule. As an MS4, I often feel like I don’t have the authority to insist on leaving to pump. Sometimes other med students have to do more work while I’m gone. I feel that sense of responsibility and duty to the team, and I have to constantly remind myself that breastfeeding my baby is legally protected and what’s highly recommended!

Something I wish someone would have told me when I breastfed was that your milk can be totally different from child to child. Luckily, my bosses and coworkers have all been very understanding, and I work in retail. My store manager even lets me use his office. It has a comfortable chair and the door locks. I’ve been very blessed. I use a hand hump too. My electric one broke in the beginning, and I’ve been using a hand pump ever since. I feel like I get more milk out, faster. Works for me.

Great advice! I loved storing my pump parts in a wet bag (reusable bags), plus I was able to pump straight into the bottles my kids used at daycare and leave them there when I picked up - so one less thing for my husband to do when he did drop off :)

Wish I could like this 1000 times. Thank you for your videos, especially this one. There are so many amazing mamas who are trying so hard to feed their babies. As an exclusive pumper for 13 months, these pumping tips are absolute gold! Pics of baby, hands free bra, and advocating for yourself and baby are so important. And thank you for helping ease the guilt so many feel when their baby feeding plan doesn’t work out.

I had the experience of being a resident and young doctor and trying to pump. There was no time for women to pump back then (1985) I ended up with a patient having a cardiac arrest once while I was trying to pump. My breast milk was stolen from the fridge in ob. There were a lot if hurdles. Pumps were incredibly expensive. I had to rent one. Things have changed a lot. I can't believe I got through all of that.

Yeah, I had the same experience whenever I worked as a bedside nurse in 2018. They never had a designated space so I had to use an unused unit (until they kicked me out) or the doctors sleep room to pump and I was lucky if I could have enough time to pump for 30 min while on my lunch break. I’m hoping that I’ll have a better time working as a telehealth nurse with baby 2 next summer and that I can pump discreetly at the desk.

I had to figure all of these out myself, but I used KellyMom as a great resource! Since I didn't always have a fridge to put pump parts in, KellyMom and other sites said you can use pump parts twice (within a 4 hour period) without washing, so that saved me 1-2 washing sessions a day when I was out on the road. I also had the pump wipes when water wasn't readily available (I was a field engineer for the military).
One thing I did since NanoBee wasn't around? I took a few gift bags the size of the Lanisohl (?) bags, cut a slit about the size of a full bag of BM, and put those in the freezer. It dispensed similarly and I'm sure a lot cheaper. So many neat products out NOW, but not in 2012/2016 when I nursed my 2 girls.

I don't know why I watched this, as I haven't been pumping for well over a year. But this is a great video, and I wish I could have watched it back then. I don't know anyone here (Denmark) who pumped for more than a couple of weeks, so thank you for this video (especially the number 5!).

I was bullied and fiercely harassed at work because I chose to use my rights to pump to breastfeed my baby. It was tough as hell and I would think that the stress was literally going to kill me. But I stuck to it. I kept going. Now looking back at it, I would do it all over again despite the stress. It was so worth it because thanks to my dedication I got to nurse my baby until he turned 2 years old. On the other hand, I definitely do wish society wasn't as evil and selfish as to believe a working mom shouldn't nurse her baby.

I have reusable silicone bags to put my pump parts in. I feel better about not throwing out a plastic bag everyday. I also have more than one pump kit setup, that way if I don't have time to wash, sterilize and dry when I get home, I can still take clean pump parts the next day. Also, the pumping/nursing bra from kindered bravely is the best. I love the tank version it's so fast to clip down and I don't feel like I'm ever exposed more than I need to be.

I was so excited to breastfeed but I could not make it work with my first or second child. My anxiety and depression just got so much worse. I felt like a failure and still do (I'm 2 months post partum) but at the same time I was not happy. I was not enjoying every moment possible with my new baby and my 3 year old. I did what was best for my children and myself and I stopped breastfeeding. I did try to pump but goodness gracious it was so hard! My three year old does not believe that mommy needs any personal space. I should have known since I cannot use the bathroom alone either. 😅

Such good content! I developed a similar approach when pumping at work (for about a year) based on my own experience and advice from other moms. A note about workplace rights: businesses under 50 employees might be exempt but also even if the business is required to follow the law they are not required to pay you for that time. I had to work while pumping (I remember you said you normally charted) and I found it very difficult to produce enough milk when I was more focused on work than pumping. Also some people can’t do their work while pumping 😕 But even with all that said, what you said is so important because so many women who are within their rights to pump are not aware. It’s such a shame how much we need to self-advocate. Many women don’t have the energy for this when they’re juggling work/infant life! Thankfully the awareness and education seems to be improving. Also you have the same (or very similar) mug that my supervisor had and it’s making me cringe 😬 I had a very difficult relationship with her when I was pumping 😞

I pumped while working part time at a restaurant with my 2 girls. I kept it simple. I made sure to "empty myself" before and after work, and usually had one quick pump on my break. I would go out to my car and use a little had held thing. If it was cold enough outside, I'd leave the whole thing in my car. I sometimes would grab a disposable cup from the restaurant to store milk. It worked for me. Fun times.

I’m a 25yr old (married and with BIG baby fever) who starts med school in July. I want to know the perspectives on pregnancy and mothering at various stages in the medical career (I’m actually doing a survey study now, for my masters project about this and I would love more insight!) Not that it matters much, but I adore pediatrics and OB and I’m gravitating towards those fields. Anyways, I would love your opinion (a video would be great, would you be open to me sending you the survey?) and really love watching your videos. Thanks! 😊 -Shelby

Times have definitely changed since I nursed my youngest daughter in 1984. I actually had to go into the bathroom and sit in a stall and breastfeed her in there. But it was worth it. I didn't even need a breast pump. I hand pumped my breast milk I had enough milk to do this after each each feed. And put it in a breast milk storage bags and dated it and the stash in my freezer was great. We went to a wedding and I had enough milk for 4 bottles and she drank them. I nursed her before I left That was the only time she had a bottle. .

I found your channel this week, and I subscribed! I have a question. I just read a comment from a “doctor” recommending pregnant women to drink beverages with “low content” of alcohol to induce labor, and I looked it up and it is actually a thing that many people do. Some women say that they drink one cup of wine occasionally, others say they do one daily, and others drink beer and other drinks close to their due date. I find this a horrible practice, but I am no healthcare professional (yet), so I am not sure. Would you recommend to anyone that they drink at any stage of their pregnancy. I suspect your answer is no already, but since even “doctors” are recommending it, I am confused. Also that same person said that you could prevent stretch marks by rapidly gaining weight... I thought that rapid weight gain (or loss) would actually increase the risk of stretch marks. I would have never thought that a doctor would recommend anyone to gain weight rapidly, let alone do it to prevent stretch marks...

      @samanthamatchett9623 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As i was reading your comment i knew the EXACT comment you were talking about, i read the same one and thought it was absolutely insane, mind you i'm no health care professional but even in the past when i changed weight significantly fast i got stretch marks, and that was no where near the weight gain most people would experience during pregnancy, it was just 10lbs in a 1-2 month time frame so as soon as they said to gain weight fast to prevent stretch marks i couldn't believe they were any sort of health care professional and the thought of drinking while pregnant scares me as is, and yet they were acting like it was good to do! I'd be terrified if i ever found out they are a real doctor!

Your setup is so optimal, I’m jealous lol I work in a very male dominated industry, we have no place for me to pump and I refuse to do it at my desk (too many nosy males around) and I don’t have a fridge that I feel comfortable using as I believe someone is attempting to grow various forms of fungus in it. Also, day care makes me bring the bottles premade, I can’t bring the bags of milk.

I put breastmilk in the fridge once. I caught someone taking it out and inspecting it to make room for other food, so that was the end of that. Wow how times have changed! I wish there were electric pumps and pumping bras when my children were little! Production was never a problem for me. Although wet shirts at work were with my first. When my second baby was in the NICU I did get to use the electric pump at the hospital (definitely NOT something that could fit into a bag, at least not one I could carry!). Then I had to put up with the rude remarks about how many little bottles I carried out of the pump room. I had my third after we were all permanently laid-off because of the recession. I nursed him longer than I intended because it's hard to give a baby a bottle he doesn't want while simultaneously being soaked in milk he does want. Other than that, I never found nursing to be hard. Except when the doctors decided my 28.5 weeker needed more calories and put her on formula through her feeding tube.

First time mom here ... due in June. How do you get a pump schedule going while also breastfeeding? Do you pump when the baby would normally eat? I’ll be on leave for 6-8 weeks and want to breastfeed and pump during that time so that the supply will be built for when I go back to work. How quickly does your milk replenish after a feed/pump? It all seems so overwhelming and I’m sure it’s not as hard as my mind is making it. Lol

My mantra for myself and my patients’ mothers: pump today what you’ll use tomorrow! Pumping as frequently as baby is feeding should give you enough milk for the next day, and if not then you adjust. You only need 1 days worth of milk (usually 1-1.25oz/hr you’re away) when you head back, so don’t stress about having a freezer full of milk :) My advice is to focus on establishing your supply via direct breastfeeding during your leave - it’s not as straightforward as we’d think sometimes! Congratulations on the little one!

OMG I'm sooo glad to see on your desk one of the cups from the most famous Polish pottery in Bolesławiec, currently totally out of their offer (so I had some trouble to make myself sure as to this particular pattern and not make myself crazy) and you have to know that all product designs from Bolesławiec are very characteristic and I will know them at a glance as our cultural resource. :D
I like watching your channel, even though I don't plan to have children myself (and I accepted that my advanced endometriosis probably will prevent it anyway). Nevertheless, I think the content published on the channel is extremely interesting and absorbing in terms of knowledge.
I send greetings, hugs and kisses to you and your whole family - from Poland!

Super random question since I know nothing about being pregnant or breast feeding but i figured you might have an answer to. If you have a lump in your breast do you think it will go away when you breast feed? I have one that I’ve had for a couple years but I’ve only had it checked out once when I was a teenager and they said it was totally normal. I’m under the impression that maybe it’s a swollen lymph node or something but I don’t remember what it’s actually called so I know it’s definitely time to go back to the doctor and make sure its still okay... I just wondered if whenever I do get pregnant (hopefully in a couple years after I get married this year) if maybe the lump would go away on it’s own?
Sorry for the super awkward question!

I have a Q about stashing your pump parts as I've seen this recommendation so frequently... since breastmilk has to be cooled before you can combine from different sessions to (inhibit bacteria growth from cooled milk being re-warmed), wouldn't residual milk on the pump parts fall into the same category? Or is the volume so negligible it's not a big deal if it's rewarmed during the next pumping session?

Hi Dr Mama Jones! Thank you for this! I’m expecting my second baby this year. I’ve pumped for my first but mostly in a work from home set up. I would be heading back to the office for my second. And I read that it may not be safe to store the parts in the fridge in between pumps. I’m a little confused as to when this is safe and when this is not. Would you be able to share some advice?
    Thank you!

Any great scrub brands good for pumping? (CNA/Cardiac monitor tech here!) I normally wear Grey's Anatomy and a jacket...Not ideal. For my first babe I did the scrubs and tank top method.

A lot of pregnant moms I work with get snap or button-up scrub tops when first pregnant as they’re a little looser. Them they wear it after the baby because it’s easier for pumping.

Do you have to rinse the pump parts off before putting them in ziploc? Just to get the milk residue off?
