    WordPress 6.1 sounds really good. I'm wondering how it will change things those of us developers using page builders on our clients' websites. I've been using Beaver Builder with PowerPack for BB and/or Ultimate Addons for BB. Will those become obsolete? What will be easier for clients when I turn sites over to them to update and maintain?

  • @paulroos8517
    @paulroos8517 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for showing what WP 6.1 is going to be like. I wish the WP query had something like a query set handle and similar to a database application you would be able to have more than one query set at the same time. For example, you have a query set handle for products and a second queryset handle for the reviews of the current product. You could then loop through the product and then do a query for the reviews on that product, while the product query set still remains in the cache.

    • @bentoth4324
      @bentoth4324 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a Query block. You can run multiple queries on a page without worrying about reset_postdata. You can build custom blocks that extend it for custom templating or even use server-rendered blocks if you really need to do something complicated (hit a 3rd party API for some info and then make a WP Query etc.)

    Great review. Having recently moved all my sites over from a pagebuilder (Enfold) to Gutenberg, I'm much more engaged with the improvements to the block editor being rolled out. Roll on the roll-out of 6.1.

    • @vonderpikeauf
      @vonderpikeauf ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Damian - I guess you meant theme instead of page builder, right? Enfold is not a page builder! So in fact you still can use Enfold but using Gutenberg to work with it.

    • @damianbarnett7038
      @damianbarnett7038 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Yes, Enfold is a theme, but I guess you would call it a hybrid theme as it has a pagebuilder built in - the Advanced Layout Editor. You can use the block editor, but that's more for compatibility than design.

  • @rtpHarry

    The new cache check in site health doesn't detect litespeed page cache at the moment, although the plugin authors have said a fix will be in the cache's next version to be compatible with it. Also the object cache recommendation seems like its overkill. This is reserved for high end hosting and I think is the exception rather than the rule, right?

    I guess I ended with the new WP when I started work on my site. I did not use the old theme as it will not be an ecommerce site(it's a sister site to an Etsy buiz) When I opened it my first thought is what the H*ll have they done to WP?. Took an evening to plow through and get anything done (upgrading php versions to latest also through a major curve as I was using Elementor Pro and it screwed up my main url site....I did find some things were interestting but really missed being able to do the things like I used to do and really would like to get back to that point but not sure how to get the old editor back. (not sure what was chosen to get the new editor)

  • @MarkConstable

    For me, the main improvement would be if the left and right control panels could optionally float so that the editing area could remain full width. If there was a hamburger icon in the top left and right corners to toggle the panel float function, then it would be easy to view the areas under the panels that would otherwise be hidden... aside from being able to drag these menu panels and pin them somewhere else. If the editing area could remain full width, then we could have a truly WYSIWYG editing experience without the dumb preview experience.

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, this is a good idea and something that drives me crazy too. Its the constant shifting of the layout when a panel is opened. And having 2 panels that shift layouts is a bit much.

    • @brentmcnutt
      @brentmcnutt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Years ago I used Microsoft Publisher. With Publisher (to the best of my recollection) you could right click on an area of the page, choose from a menu of what you wanted to put on the page (image, text, etc.) and literally drag the object where you wanted it on the page. You could also click and drag the edge to resize the object. I wish Wordpress would create a WYSIWYG like that. The reason I remember this so clearly is when they came out with Microsoft Front Page I was like "Why didn't you just make Front Page work like Publisher?"

    • @MarkConstable
      @MarkConstable ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brentmcnutt And decades ago I used an Amiga with a program called PageStream that also allowed to simply click anywhere on the canvas, add any kind of content, and move and resize it in place.

    • @user-yg2gw4je8d
      @user-yg2gw4je8d ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brentmcnutt With 90s desktop publishing the output was to a printer. The colour depth of that printer was known, as were the dimensions of the paper onto which the design would be printed. The letter and word spacing and line height was known. Once printed, nothing moved, shifted, rendered incorrectly, relied on a deactivated browser feature, could be subverted by accessibility features, or otherwise failed to work because browser X had a different reading of the specification for a particular CSS or HTML feature you were trying to use.
      The reverse is the case for the web and a true WYSIWYG editor is an enormously difficult task to pull off. In the day's of Frontpage the primitive nature of HTML and CSS made the job of a WYSIWYG editor even harder. Microsoft did an amazing job given the limitations they were working with.
      Today's builders do an exceptional job, but also have to deal with an explosion in the variety of screen sizes, aspect ratios and colour depths. Browsers and blockers provide users with fine-grained control too, allowing users to change the font, its size, line height, letter spacing, word spacing and even the colour palette. Your desire to impose your design will over the viewer is thwarted at every step! Good luck building a true WYSIWYG editor under those conditions!
      Thus, the sort of experience you're looking for hasn't been practical to date, and probably never will be. This is a fact and must be accepted. But once accepted, the limitations of today's best page builders are superseded by the excellent job they do in getting you as close as possible to WYSIWYG.
      If you haven't done so already, watch a few reviews of WP page builders, make a short list, and then try out two or three. It's likely one will work better for you, and the time spent mastering it will pay you back in spades.
      The WP core block editor complicates matters somewhat. Who knows what the future holds? But there is one situation where the block editor moves to the top of the list: If you're working on a frontend-heavy site that requires a lot of rendering to produce a web page, go for the block editor.
      The technology underpinning the block editor shifts the rendering to the browser and frees up server resources. Yes, even in WP 6.1 the block editor is a pig to use. Nevertheless, the rendering speed on a frontend-heavy site makes it worth investing your time in mastering the block editor.
      As a bonus, there are now many free libraries of custom blocks and page design elements. There are even tools that allow you to build your own custom blocks. There are also what I think of as design snippets, where you can download predefined designs for specific elements on a page rather than build them yourself. You can even assemble and save groups of blocks that perform some function on the page. It's very flexible once mastered (especially in 6.1), and you can get a LOT of blocks, designs and custom assemblies for free. That situation, along with the usability of the block editor, is likely to improve going forward.

    • @brentmcnutt
      @brentmcnutt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-yg2gw4je8d Thanks so much for the detailed reply. Yes, I have used several of the page builders and have become fond of the block system over the Classic editor. I have exported a group of blocks as you mentioned and imported the group to another entire site. I’m excited in the direction of Wordpress.

    Will the design changes I make be applied only to the site I'm editing, or will they change every site on the internet? And if it changes everything on the internet, when everyone starts doing it won't it cause the internet to explode?

    • @WPCrafter
      @WPCrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The design changes you make will only be applied to the website you're editing, so don't worry - your internet won't explode! However, if enough people start making these changes, it's possible that the entire internet could experience some issues. So tread carefully and make sure you have a plan in place for potential glitches or bugs before implementing any major design tweaks! ;)
