Okay... I definitely don't understand people. You complained when Madness came out because you wanted the old Muse back. Now you have the old Muse back and you keep complaining? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Listen to Agitated and then listen to this. I understand you dislike Psycho IF YOU DISLIKE MUSE IN GENERAL, but this song is PURE MUSE STYILE. It combines the old Muse with the greatness of the BH&R Muse with those chord changes and this awesome bridge, the end of the song, the melody in the part of "Your ass belongs to me now". AND HOW CAN YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LYRICS?! SIMPLE LYRICS?!?!?! I undersant that you complain about the simple lyrics when Survival came out. But this... Please, analise them. Not only is it the blend of old and new styles we've been asking for, but it's bad ass that they're taking it a step further and making a concept record. Two things: 1. The song is great. 2. There we go again: people judging a whole album/band just because the fucking song it's "no what I expected". Muse is NEVER what people expects because they always change on every album. That's the strong point of Muse. Anyways, what about " this song is not creative"?... What the fuck about Uprising? Is it a mega complicated song with a superfastspeedmetal solo and a huge orchestra on the background and a deep grand piano with chords and notes that just a real genius of the music could think of? NOPE, it's a simple but powerful song that sound as great as Psycho. I even think that both songs have the same tempo, and definetly both song have the same swing, you can notice that on the drums. So stop being a "master music judge" because you are not. Ridley Campbell It first happened in 1998 as far as we know. It's 16 year old riff, but it's always been a fan favourite so it's nice to see it in a song
I hate the Absolution/Origin Fanboys so much. LET GO OF THE PAST. Move past it, and realize that a band progresses, evolves, and turns the corner. You've also gotta realize that a band that keeps the same sound forever will lose relevance and will be chastised for never changing (just look at Nickelback.) You also must know that this is MUSE, and they've got a reputation for going crazy with experimentation. Did Matt not say that if they reverted to the exact same sound as earlier records, that could be disastrous?

I don't know if you've ever had military training, but the people who train soldiers aren't exactly subtle about their psychological abuse; they're not poetic; they aren't going about turning normal people into hardened killers by being flowery with their language and using complex refrains. They're yelling insults and obscenities ad nausea. I think it's quite obvious that was the point of the lyrics and the repetitive nature of them. You brainwash someone through repetition.
I agree with the concept of your argument but this is no progression or evolution from Uprising. This doesn't sound like experimentation, it's just the bouncy glam that they've interspersed through all of their last 3 albums. However, they do tend to release the cheesiest song first (Survival, Uprising, Supermassive Black Hole) so I still have a lot of interest for the new record.

Muse opened their concert in Athens with this song. We got all so pumped and I still can't believe I managed to be in one of their concerts. One of the best times of my entire life.

There are a couple of people here that understand and appreciate what Matt, Chris, and Dom are trying to do(which is create new music that expresses their feelings about different subjects), but about 90% of the comments here are just complaints. "The lyrics are too simple" "They shouldn't curse" "It's too repetitive" "I wish we had the old Muse back" Here's a tip for you "fans" that only seem to be able to complain: Try making a successful band and write new music for an overly-demanding fan base for 16 years. It might be more difficult than you think. I'm not saying that you can't dislike any of their songs to be a true Muse fan, because there are a hand full of songs that I don't personally enjoy, but you need to quit complaining over one song. This album is going to be amazing, just like this song.

this is a Great song. and for what i have seen with 2nd law and resistance. people tend to hate the new album, because it was not like (previous Muse Album) but Muse is a band, That i hope all their fans know, that changes their style every album. i love that about them. also if you want to listen to say absolution style songs. listen to absolution. their songs never grow old. and you can already listen to those when ever you want. why make them *AGAIN*. and to be honest. if you look at 2nd law. aka the "worst" muse album. the song *supremacy* is pretty much the *DEFINITION* of "True Muse", Matt again uses his Tenor skills and Great bass/guitar riffs in a similar style as we had in Showbiz - absolution. They promised us 'the old sound' and they gave us this. This track (and probably the whole album) has Death Magnetics syndrome: The artists wanna go back to their old style, but for some reason, it becomes a shadow of their former selves. I think this is definately better than their previous album and half of The Resistance, but I'm still disappointed because of the promise. Now, what defined the OoS sound for me that this song doesn't have: 1. an absurd amount of arpeggios, whether it's piano, guitar or sampler 2. a HUGE variety of vocals. Also within the songs 3. falsetto 4. faster. This combined would make the song a lot less boring than it is now. It has the sound, it's just a boring shadow of what Muse used to be. This song is a bare skeleton of what it should be. Then again, it is definately a step in the right direction. If these promises weren't made, and I heard this song for the first time, I'd think "Yeah, still not gonna buy the album unlike the first few ones, but it's good to see that they haven't completely lost it with the last album" EDIT: it came to my attention that I was reading a 'loose interpretation of the reporter' of the interview with Muse. It wasn't ment to have the old 'style', just 'old jams' actually taking form in a song form. Looking at all the comments on this video, I'm not the only one with this problem. Good thing this got cleared up. I feel like an idiot now for not checking my sources. We wanted the "old" sound and that's what we got - an old sound. Nothing new, nothing fresh, something familiar. "Boring" as you said it. Although I don't find this track that boring. Instead I find it really interesting that MUSE finally made a song out of that "impro-"riff that they have been playing live for years now after Stockholm Syndrome. But yeah it already got too old for me :P

Anti-war I can respect. The warning that was/is 1984 I think is far too prescient. The naked disdain that is the thesis of this song just makes me feel sad philosophically. Soldier's poem saw the plight and turmoil of the soldiers as cogs in the machine raged against. This song just throws them under the bus (Think "Baby Killers" of the Vietnam era)
I don't think it's the subject matter so much as it is the actual lyrics. They don't have much depth. It's pretty blunt, doesn't leave much to the imagination. It's a disappointment because it just plain isn't up to snuff with what Matt's written before. And for the record, Muse didn't bring in the Illuminati/NWO anti-war/government aesthetic until Origin of Symmetry, and then left it again for Absolution. Showbiz was much more low-key on the themes. The Resistance is the most of that aesthetic that's ever been present in a single album (although that was kind of the point).

If you look at the entire song, the song title, the video and the music, you should get a very strong impression of a concept that Matt obviously thought of. He never wrote music that looked like it went in a direction it wasn't meant to go. Now, the purpose of this song clearly is to dumb it down to the level of the first-person narrator. When I look at it that way, I feel a sense in it. The straight-forwardness of both lyrics and music perfectly match the character of what a typical drill sergeant says. So while everyone of all the lyric haters hates on the lyrics, they actually hate on the way of thinking that Matt is trying to criticize with this song -which only leaves the conclusion that he did perfectly well with Psycho. :)

Ross Fergus it's the Supermassive Black Hole of this album. I think it'll hit some oddly at first, but then become a really popular track, if not already an initial head banger.

Dead Inside will probaby be a sad love song, where the guy loses everything (considering psycho starts with "love will get you nowhere"). The rest seem heavy until aftermath which should be quiter.

This piece by Muse makes me feel so full of energy and I respect them for that as It delivers in the awesome department and sounds as badass as you expect it to be. The lyrics and singing is on point and shows the military world through a very interesting way and how it's the unavoidable reality you can have some nasty authority not all push you to do things that you don't want to their for their questionable cause and how where you can to use critical thinking and where it's in your power to do so to strife to follow your own values without falling for some of the questionable aspects of the military system. On another note the bass and drums hit hard as hell like holy damn they really are incredible here. Mad props to Muse for being awesome and I will cheer them if they continue to have brilliant things happen for them. Until then blissful vibes.
Okay if you have been listening to Muse for at least the past two albums, you can gather they are a band that tries new things. I have never heard a band that can change so much from one album to another and attempt things that could turn a fan base against them. 2nd law was a classic example. But this is what makes them Muse. They will hit and miss because they're experimental, but to be honest what makes Muse my Favorite band is this very factor. I love them because they try new things and sing about real topics in society, and there is not a song they've released that isn't on my playlist. But I really get tired of hearing apparent muse fans not cope with the music. They are different, experimental, and there is not a song they have released from Showbiz to 2nd Law that isn't Muse. If you can't cope with that, why call yourself a Muse Fan. A Muse fan realizes what makes Muse, Muse. If you prefer an album or an era or a particular style, then that's what your a fan of. If your a fan of Muse, you appreciate what drives them to make their music and wont complain no matter what they produce. You will have preferences but you shouldn't be complaining. This song was not what I expected, but that just makes me excited for the rest of of the album!!
I feel this so hard! You definitely hit the nail on the head for me. Everyone talks about how they absolutely hate The 2nd Law, but for me I think it really helped solidify what I love about them so much: they were willing to push the bounds of what was "acceptable" and "normal." They experiment. The Resistance is essentially my all time favorite album, and it's because of that grandiose-Hypermusic, if you will-feel to their songs. I know this won't be the best song on the album; I honestly see them singing this song as a joke in a way.

Mongis Lort I'm in the same boat. I practically HATED Madness when it first came out. Now I hear it on the radio and crank it up XD The last album wasn't my favorite but I still saw them in concert and fell in love all over again. It taught me not to judge a new album or song by them so quickly. Digging this one, can't wait to hear the full album :)

If they would've put this Song in "Origin of Symmetry" everyone would have loved it. Its a good song. Not one of their best, but I think there will be better songs on the Album.
There should be better songs on the album. If not, it's bad news for Muse. And for their ardent fans like us. We didn't predict such a single. We cannot possibly predict the album. It can be mind blowing. It can be one of the greatest concept albums of the decade. But, it can also be the worst effort by Muse so far. Although if they really did make any efforts, they wouldn't produce such mediocre songs. Their efforts can produce epic music, everyone knows it. We just can't predict Drones. And that terrible artwork. All we can do is be patient and pray for them. Because whatever happens, we know they're better than that.
This song isn't good enough to even be a filler track in Origin Of Symmetry. Make no mistake about it, this is a generic pop-rock tune more in the vein of Uprising and Madness than anything in their older albums. This song is too simplistic, monotonous, and goes nowhere. Just compare this to something like Space Dementia, for example, the difference in complexity is huge.
You'll probably never get this, but Matt. I wanted you to know this song gave me horrible PTSD flashbacks( I was in the Marines, and it was far more intense then the drill instructor in this song...but because I've been obsessed with your band since I was in high school in 2005- Eventually I got over it, I would take my friends to all your small shows in Ohio whenever you guys came- I remember one time I think you came out in an Ohio State Football Jersey in Cincinnati. Musically, I like the new song. I think the main riff is awesome, kinda reminds me of Marilyn Manson (Disposable Teens or The Beautiful People...) Lyrically, it's too obvious. There's no subtle hints at what the message/meaning is. I think they're too straightforward and leave nothing up to the imagination. Maybe that's Matt's intention. But still, I enjoy the song. I won't judge an entire album by hearing one song. I think too many people make that common mistake. I love that he just lets loose with the "fucking psycho!" A 'parental advisory' Muse record is a nice change.
Hannibal Bateman They've always been quite cryptic with their song writing, so it's nice to have a good old fashioned rock song where they refuse to pull any stops. There are three different levels of this song. 3 - Ruled By Secrecy; a song that is dark and brooding, with very well written lyrics. Relatively quiet. 2 - Uprising; something a little more obvious, but with some stranger references in the verses. Louder. 1 - Psycho; where Muse go absolutely fucking insane and pull out all of the stops that were holding them back when they wrote Uprising. They simply say what they think out loud and tear into the government and the higher tiers of the military with no remorse. No remorse in dynamics either, this deserves to be played loud.
As you said it does have a taint of Marilyn Manson in it, but to understand Muse you need to hear the entire album. I already love this first one and wonder were it fits in the album 'Drones'. Just feels like an appetite for another 'Resistance' storytelling album. And that one was on the spot!

Eager_Swallow Sadly, I only discovered Muse in 2012, so I haven't exactly been with them for a lot, but I've already seen them live and I've heard every single song from their discography, and it's nearly impossible for me to choose. ^_^ I love Rain as much as I love this, I love Forameus as much as I love Panic Station, I love Boredom as much as I love Undisclosed Desires. I sincerely think that every single Muse album is great in its own right and I doubt that this one will be different. Although I managed to enjoy the changes they did through these years, that doesn't happen to all the artists I hear. If one of them releases an album that I can't enjoy, I move on to something else and wait for a next one. I don't feel like the artist has a duty to please my tastes with everything he does, and neither should anyone. It's a petty, selfish feeling which usually leads to expectations that'll leave one's mind closed to new things.
Guys, if you think it's impossible to sound this good, you need to hear them live. They're just as awesome. I've been to their last concert in Spain, that wasn't a concert, IT WAS A SHOW!!! Only comparable to Queen, Beatles maybe, yk, those legends from the past. Definetly waiting for them to put another date I can go to! 😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩
Besides their myriad of musical talents, Muse has a message. Why is this single stripped down? Because there is a message. Why do you think they have purposely chosen names for their songs and albums like MK Ultra, United States of Eurasia: COLLATERAL DAMAGE, H.A.A.R.P., Drones, etc...? The reason we're disappointed is because they've been bringing this message to light for a while now. We get the point. The whole album is called Drones, Nicole. That implies we can expect a lot more songs like Psycho. Allow us to commiserate.

I hope they don't have a whole album recycling how government is bad because they have already eloquently established themselves as anti-government, and dedicating another entire album to that subject again might alienate the fans like me who are looking for the variety of subject matter that they have presented in previous albums.
As a heavy Muse fan I gotta say that I know enough about the political agendas of the world. There are so many other things Matt could be writing about.. incredibly talented band however.
I don't know how I feel about this...I like the jam but I don't like the random samplings or the lyrics, which I usually like with Muse. There's more cursing than I think is necessary and the vocals are really "safe", in that they don't stretch Matt's range very much. I like the instrumentals on this though, albeit I wish it was a bit faster. Idk, it's not bad but it could be a lot better.
Bass Lightyeah No doubt they'll have some good songs, they're Muse. I just want the album to feel good, not as give or take as the 2nd Law was. There were good songs, but there were also meh songs.

I freaking love this song, it always energizes me and turns a bad or sad mood inside out; I always end up smiling while singing my ass off! Muse is unique, diverse, and simply genius 🤯 mind-blowing!
I mean, this is the direction I wanted them to go with The 2nd Law, but this song really disappoints. This sounds like somebody tried to parody the early Muse sound more than anything else. It's repetitive, and while being repetitive is okay, there's nothing to grab my attention in this track. The drill sergeant yelling is kitschy, and I can't take this song seriously because of that. Also, Bellamy's voice has always sounded poetic, but him bellowing "your ASS BELONGS TO ME NOWWWW" was the deal breaker for me. If this is the sound they're going for on Drones, I'll gladly take a full listen. But if this is the best song they have to offer on Drones, I will be thoroughly disappointed.
Not to mention that this song sounds like Uprising but more profane, and the whole "war is bad mmmkay" theme has been covered waaaaaaay too many times in rock and metal music.
Tom Wall I don't find anything wrong with a common theme being approached again, but the way Muse have approached the "war is bad" theme in this track is bland. Muse have always been on that "war is bad, corporations are evil" trail ever since they started, but there is nothing critical or engaging in this track. The profanity sounds forced, like it was added just to show how "edgy" they could be. I much prefer more poetic lyrics, stuff that doesn't need profanity to mess with your brain.
for those who think this is the best they have to offer think again. This isn't the lead single. This song has simply been given to support the upcoming Psycho UK tour. The lead single 'Dead Inside' is out on March 23rd

Pivotsky Solène I have the problem that this song is not very exciting. It's a decent song and I like it, but it is nothing new and doesn't have very interesting song ideas either. In other words, I'm not because it is not the old Muse, I'm disappointed because it's not enough new Muse. Of course I will listen to the album in it's entirety once it's released and maybe I'll be blown away (just like I was disappointed by the new Blind GUardian single and the album was one of their best), but for now all we have is this, so all I can talk about is this.

Good song and an accurate depiction of the US military. My dad is a Vietnam veteran. The military broke him. It's taken him over 40 years to get treatment for his PTSD. He can finally sleep without having nightmares. He has finally put his demons to rest.
Glad to hear he is doing better now. War is hell. Hopefully many others who deal with military PTSD will get the help they need as well. Individual suffering can cause generational trauma too :(

Yes finally they're back to their old style. don't get me wrong I've loved every single album but that old hard rock like from Black holes and Revelations. Muse was my first band and will always be my favorite. What I don't understand is how people are arguing about riffs and "simple" lyrics and cursing when there is what i think could be a real issue. Honestly, I screamed "aye, sir" in boot camp like everyone else, but this hits home. The indoctrination and brainwashing that we undergo is hideous, and their portrayal of it is nothing short of accurate. It isn't offensive, it's sincere.
I think that the point those guys (myself included) are trying to make is that by muse standards (and they're putting more emphasis on that) the writing is simple, repetitive, i can't remember the last muse song with swearing in it and so it just feels odd to hear them do that. The song is droney and repetitive, the lyrics are boring and lacking any complexity, the music is a little bland as well imho and as some said might fit well in the context of an album but still is kind of just ok. I see your point that some could be offended by it but there are plenty of songs that criticise groups but this song seems to criticise (and this might just be me drawing conclusions where there arent any) the indoctrination by either the country or the army itself of the soldiers etc within the army... I hate the Absolution/Origin Fanboys so much. LET GO OF THE PAST. Move past it, and realize that a band progresses, evolves, and turns the corner. You've also gotta realize that a band that keeps the same sound forever will lose relevance and will be chastised for never changing (just look at Nickelback.) You also must know that this is MUSE, and they've got a reputation for going crazy with experimentation. Did Matt not say that if they reverted to the exact same sound as earlier records, that could be disastrous?
I should also add that I loved those records as much as the next guy, but I'm always open to change with ANY band.

At least Pyscho's cheesy lyrics have a purpose and are from a particular perspective - that of the Drill Sergeant. I don't know if you've ever had military training, but the people who train soldiers aren't exactly subtle about their psychological abuse; they're not poetic; they aren't going about turning normal people into hardened killers by being flowery with their language and using complex refrains. They're yelling insults and obscenities ad nausea. I think it's quite obvious that was the point of the lyrics and the repetitive nature of them. You brainwash someone through repetition.
I agree with the concept of your argument but this is no progression or evolution from Uprising.
This doesn't sound like experimentation, it's just the bouncy glam that they've interspersed through all of their last 3 albums.
However, they do tend to release the cheesiest song first (Survival, Uprising, Supermassive Black Hole) so I still have a lot of interest for the new record.

"The lyrics are too simple" "They shouldn't curse" "It's too repetitive" "I wish we had the old Muse back" Here's a tip for you "fans" that only seem to be able to complain: Try making a successful band and write new music for an overly-demanding fan base for 16 years. It might be more difficult than you think. I'm not saying that you can't dislike any of their songs to be a true Muse fan, because there are a hand full of songs that I don't personally enjoy, but you need to quit complaining over one song. This album is going to be amazing, just like this song.

i never said i didn't like it. but that's what i hear from a lot of people. seems you guys have the same opinion as i have.
They promised us 'the old sound' and they gave us this.
This track (and probably the whole album) has Death Magnetics syndrome: The artists wanna go back to their old style, but for some reason, it becomes a shadow of their former selves.
I think this is definately better than their previous album and half of The Resistance, but I'm still disappointed because of the promise.
Now, what defined the OoS sound for me that this song doesn't have:
1. an absurd amount of arpeggios, whether it's piano, guitar or sampler
2. a HUGE variety of vocals. Also within the songs
3. falsetto
4. faster.
This combined would make the song a lot less boring than it is now.
It has the sound, it's just a boring shadow of what Muse used to be. This song is a bare skeleton of what it should be.
Then again, it is definately a step in the right direction.
If these promises weren't made, and I heard this song for the first time, I'd think "Yeah, still not gonna buy the album unlike the first few ones, but it's good to see that they haven't completely lost it with the last album"
EDIT: it came to my attention that I was reading a 'loose interpretation of the reporter' of the interview with Muse. It wasn't ment to have the old 'style', just 'old jams' actually taking form in a song form. Looking at all the comments on this video, I'm not the only one with this problem. Good thing this got cleared up. I feel like an idiot now for not checking my sources.
To people who say that people who complain should just 'shut up and enjoy the music or leave this video': I was not looking for a fight, I was looking for a discussion about what other people see as 'the old muse'.

We wanted the "old" sound and that's what we got - an old sound. Nothing new, nothing fresh, something familiar. "Boring" as you said it. Although I don't find this track that boring. Instead I find it really interesting that MUSE finally made a song out of that "impro-"riff that they have been playing live for years now after Stockholm Syndrome. But yeah it already got too old for me :P

Anti-war I can respect. The warning that was/is 1984 I think is far too prescient. The naked disdain that is the thesis of this song just makes me feel sad philosophically.
Soldier's poem saw the plight and turmoil of the soldiers as cogs in the machine raged against. This song just throws them under the bus (Think "Baby Killers" of the Vietnam era)
I don't think it's the subject matter so much as it is the actual lyrics. They don't have much depth. It's pretty blunt, doesn't leave much to the imagination. It's a disappointment because it just plain isn't up to snuff with what Matt's written before.
And for the record, Muse didn't bring in the Illuminati/NWO anti-war/government aesthetic until Origin of Symmetry, and then left it again for Absolution. Showbiz was much more low-key on the themes. The Resistance is the most of that aesthetic that's ever been present in a single album (although that was kind of the point).

If you look at the entire song, the song title, the video and the music, you should get a very strong impression of a concept that Matt obviously thought of. He never wrote music that looked like it went in a direction it wasn't meant to go.
Now, the purpose of this song clearly is to dumb it down to the level of the first-person narrator. When I look at it that way, I feel a sense in it. The straight-forwardness of both lyrics and music perfectly match the character of what a typical drill sergeant says.
So while everyone of all the lyric haters hates on the lyrics, they actually hate on the way of thinking that Matt is trying to criticize with this song -which only leaves the conclusion that he did perfectly well with Psycho. :)

This piece by Muse makes me feel so full of energy and I respect them for that as It delivers in the awesome department and sounds as badass as you expect it to be.
The lyrics and singing is on point and shows the military world through a very interesting way and how it's the unavoidable reality you can have some nasty authority not all push you to do things that you don't want to their for their questionable cause and how where you can to use critical thinking and where it's in your power to do so to strife to follow your own values without falling for some of the questionable aspects of the military system.
On another note the bass and drums hit hard as hell like holy damn they really are incredible here.
Mad props to Muse for being awesome and I will cheer them if they continue to have brilliant things happen for them.

Okay if you have been listening to Muse for at least the past two albums, you can gather they are a band that tries new things. I have never heard a band that can change so much from one album to another and attempt things that could turn a fan base against them. 2nd law was a classic example. But this is what makes them Muse. They will hit and miss because they're experimental, but to be honest what makes Muse my Favorite band is this very factor. I love them because they try new things and sing about real topics in society, and there is not a song they've released that isn't on my playlist. But I really get tired of hearing apparent muse fans not cope with the music. They are different, experimental, and there is not a song they have released from Showbiz to 2nd Law that isn't Muse. If you can't cope with that, why call yourself a Muse Fan. A Muse fan realizes what makes Muse, Muse. If you prefer an album or an era or a particular style, then that's what your a fan of. If your a fan of Muse, you appreciate what drives them to make their music and wont complain no matter what they produce. You will have preferences but you shouldn't be complaining. This song was not what I expected, but that just makes me excited for the rest of of the album!!

I feel this so hard! You definitely hit the nail on the head for me. Everyone talks about how they absolutely hate The 2nd Law, but for me I think it really helped solidify what I love about them so much: they were willing to push the bounds of what was "acceptable" and "normal." They experiment. The Resistance is essentially my all time favorite album, and it's because of that grandiose-Hypermusic, if you will-feel to their songs. I know this won't be the best song on the album; I honestly see them singing this song as a joke in a way.

This song isn't good enough to even be a filler track in Origin Of Symmetry. Make no mistake about it, this is a generic pop-rock tune more in the vein of Uprising and Madness than anything in their older albums. This song is too simplistic, monotonous, and goes nowhere. Just compare this to something like Space Dementia, for example, the difference in complexity is huge.

Hannibal Bateman They've always been quite cryptic with their song writing, so it's nice to have a good old fashioned rock song where they refuse to pull any stops. There are three different levels of this song.
3 - Ruled By Secrecy; a song that is dark and brooding, with very well written lyrics. Relatively quiet.
2 - Uprising; something a little more obvious, but with some stranger references in the verses. Louder.
1 - Psycho; where Muse go absolutely fucking insane and pull out all of the stops that were holding them back when they wrote Uprising. They simply say what they think out loud and tear into the government and the higher tiers of the military with no remorse. No remorse in dynamics either, this deserves to be played loud.

Eager_Swallow Sadly, I only discovered Muse in 2012, so I haven't exactly been with them for a lot, but I've already seen them live and I've heard every single song from their discography, and it's nearly impossible for me to choose. ^_^ I love Rain as much as I love this, I love Forameus as much as I love Panic Station, I love Boredom as much as I love Undisclosed Desires. It's too hard. XD
I sincerely think that every single Muse album is great in its own right and I doubt that this one will be different. Although I managed to enjoy the changes they did through these years, that doesn't happen to all the artists I hear. If one of them releases an album that I can't enjoy, I move on to something else and wait for a next one. I don't feel like the artist has a duty to please my tastes with everything he does, and neither should anyone. It's a petty, selfish feeling which usually leads to expectations that'll leave one's mind closed to new things.

As a heavy Muse fan I gotta say that I know enough about the political agendas of the world. There are so many other things Matt could be writing about.. incredibly talented band however.
I don't know how I feel about this...I like the jam but I don't like the random samplings or the lyrics, which I usually like with Muse. There's more cursing than I think is necessary and the vocals are really "safe", in that they don't stretch Matt's range very much. I like the instrumentals on this though, albeit I wish it was a bit faster. Idk, it's not bad but it could be a lot better.

I mean, this is the direction I wanted them to go with The 2nd Law, but this song really disappoints. This sounds like somebody tried to parody the early Muse sound more than anything else. It's repetitive, and while being repetitive is okay, there's nothing to grab my attention in this track. The drill sergeant yelling is kitschy, and I can't take this song seriously because of that. Also, Bellamy's voice has always sounded poetic, but him bellowing "your ASS BELONGS TO ME NOWWWW" was the deal breaker for me. If this is the sound they're going for on Drones, I'll gladly take a full listen. But if this is the best song they have to offer on Drones, I will be thoroughly disappointed.
Not to mention that this song sounds like Uprising but more profane, and the whole "war is bad mmmkay" theme has been covered waaaaaaay too many times in rock and metal music.
Tom Wall I don't find anything wrong with a common theme being approached again, but the way Muse have approached the "war is bad" theme in this track is bland. Muse have always been on that "war is bad, corporations are evil" trail ever since they started, but there is nothing critical or engaging in this track. The profanity sounds forced, like it was added just to show how "edgy" they could be. I much prefer more poetic lyrics, stuff that doesn't need profanity to mess with your brain.

I have the problem that this song is not very exciting. It's a decent song and I like it, but it is nothing new and doesn't have very interesting song ideas either. In other words, I'm not because it is not the old Muse, I'm disappointed because it's not enough new Muse.
Of course I will listen to the album in it's entirety once it's released and maybe I'll be blown away (just like I was disappointed by the new Blind GUardian single and the album was one of their best), but for now all we have is this, so all I can talk about is this.

Good song and an accurate depiction of the US military. My dad is a Vietnam veteran. The military broke him. It's taken him over 40 years to get treatment for his PTSD. He can finally sleep without having nightmares. He has finally put his demons to rest.

Yes finally they're back to their old style. don't get me wrong I've loved every single album but that old hard rock like from Black holes and Revelations. Muse was my first band and will always be my favorite. What I don't understand is how people are arguing about riffs and "simple" lyrics and cursing when there is what i think could be a real issue. Personally as a member of the military I don't find the song offensive but I feel like others might when they're being called psycho killer drones.

Honestly, I screamed "aye, sir" in boot camp like everyone else, but this hits home. The indoctrination and brainwashing that we undergo is hideous, and their portrayal of it is nothing short of accurate. It isn't offensive, it's sincere.
I think that the point those guys (myself included) are trying to make is that by muse standards (and they're putting more emphasis on that) the writing is simple, repetitive, i can't remember the last muse song with swearing in it and so it just feels odd to hear them do that. The song is droney and repetitive, the lyrics are boring and lacking any complexity, the music is a little bland as well imho and as some said might fit well in the context of an album but still is kind of just ok.
I see your point that some could be offended by it but there are plenty of songs that criticise groups but this song seems to criticise (and this might just be me drawing conclusions where there arent any) the indoctrination by either the country or the army itself of the soldiers etc within the army... I don't know if I explained it very well but yeah
