What I love bout Loser Baby is that it was -exactly- what Angel needed to hear. He was totally ready to resist the "Ooooh, you're not so bad!" type toxic positivity that Charlie would've given him. Husk coming in with "Yup, you're a loser. You're right!" just completely threw him off his defense and made him more receptive to the "But you're not in this alone" messaging
Yeah and something I appreciate is it's really funny! I feel like most shows would be apprehensive to make light of the situation even though cutting the tension is absolutely necessary to comfort angel
it's the "well let me just say you're correct... WHAT?" moment where you really see that totally catch him off gaurd.
As someone who's had adjacent struggles, and self worth issues, it's an incredibly comforting song to hear. It had me in tears the first time I watched it. Angel wasn't expecting it, I WASN'T EXPECTING IT! It hit me over the head with a hug

So the actress who voices Lute (the character singing the banger section in You Don’t Know) is Jessica Vosk, who is known as one of the best Elphaba’s on Broadway. Like, she’s considered just as good if not better than Idina Menzel, so she was going to blow away the part for Lute no matter what.
Honestly, I’m shocked at how stacked the cast for Hazbin Hotel is, because it’s full of extremely talented and well respected Broadway actors, Internet personalities, and well known screen actors. It’s an insane cast list, and they absolutely deserve all the praise they’ve been getting for their performances.

Funny thing is it is not a super uncommon trait. It is basically a needed ability for anyone that does throat intensive performance. I use it for haunted house acting so I can go 3-5 solid hour of screaming and growling without destroying my voice and I believe some metal singers have talked about it as well

That's literally just how abuse is. Victims always make excuses for their abusers, they try to make it seem like everything is fine, because they have been conditioned into it by the abuser. I don't understand how people can think this is glorifying it when it's just an accurate portrayal of abuse, both sexual and non-sexual.
As a victim of abuse, this really hit me. So thank you for this.
Well people have this preconceived notion that abuse is a thing that you'll always recognize. They hit you? Bad. They don't listen to you? Bad. They manipulate you? Bad.
They think it's obvious. That victims should literally have no choice but to comply whilst knowing and understanding their situation (like Angel rn) so when the abused makes excuses for the abuser, it makes those people think it's the creators trying to make abuse look better

That and abuse itself isnt always physical or sexual. Sure, it can go that way in some cases but abuse can be verbal and condescending. It can be manipulative too. The reason why Angel Dust doesnt want to seek redemption is because he feels that making excuses for his condition and not being a “perfect victim” makes him not enough of a victim of abuse to be redeemable which is what these godawful people also perpetuate. It’s not enough to just be a victim, you have to the damsel-in-distress-always-perfect-do-no-drugs-or-have-done-mistakes type of victim and many victims arent like that.

The easiest way to see that Hazbin is not trying to glorify abusive relationships is to look at how Valentino is portrayed when in a situation where he is not in control. He is introduced as an emotionally immature manchild who has to be talked down by his co-villain to stop him from doing something very stupid and is read to filth by his other co-villain because he was messing up their operation with a temper tantrum. Dude is portrayed as the most pathetic of the Vs

My top three are as follows.
1st: Poison
2nd: More than Anything (I’ll explain)
3rd: Loser Baby
More than anything in my mind has the best representation of vocal technicality from Jeremy Jordan specifically. His tone immediately draws you in and that switch from chest voice to head voice in “I’ll shelter and adore…” is just utter perfection. Vibrato is always on point while still containing that storytelling quality in his voice when performing. I’m also a sucker for emotional ballads, and this duet just absolutely made me melt. It’s genuinely a toss up between this and poison depending on the mood I’m in.
More than Anything is honestly underrated as hell. I love it so much, and it’s definitely right next to Loser Baby at the top for me.

The thing with Stayed Gone switching gears at the start, is that it's meant to show that although Vox wants to keep up the facade of being in control, setting new status quo, being calm and collected, actually he's totally insecure and actually terrified of Alastor coming back. He's probably the only Overlord who actually gives a shit about Alastor coming back, if you ask me.

The only thing that would have made this better would have been if Danny had also ranked “Insane” by Alastor’s pilot episode voice actor. Also the only reason I ended up watching Hazbin Hotel was because of how many videos of “You Didn’t Know” kept popping up on TH-cam and TikTok until I finally watched it and it blew me away.

Addict has the same kind of ending as poison in that it changes up and you truly get a look into Angel's mind and how he knows. What I like is that in addict he's more hopefully or at least even a tiny bit hopefully in that "maybe it won't be so bad inside this hotel." That he has started to recognize he has a small safe space. That's the first step
To be fair Velvette's (the "monster high" character) lyrics and speech patterns are probably supposed to be reminiscent of the era she died like a lot of the other characters, but we don't consider that as much cuz its a more recent era. But I get it, I love her so much and some of the Respectless lyrics still make me sigh
I was thinking that as he was talking about her. Like I get that personality can be annoying, but I kind of love it with her. She's probably my favorite of the V's.
I just realized something about Poison while watching this: at the end of the song, when Angel runs into his room and locks the door, his room still has a balcony. So, even though Angel is trying to hide himself and not want to be touched, Val still have full access to him whenever he wants. 😭
If he recognized it as a safe space it's probably the safest place to stay in the entire studio

after the credits of Addict there is a drop. Angel has a moment where the chorus changes and his mood drops into a more sad feel.
Also I my oppinion the lyrics for whatever it takes are great but i CAN NOT listen to it. because Vaggie's part is so high pitched it HURTS to listen to. same goes for Loser Baby. Angel's voice cracks in a way that hurts my soul. i gotta listen to covers of them.

Definitely, but I think people also forget that Val own's Angel's soul in this context. I wasn't aware of the controversy, but it's not like Angel keeps going back because of the manipulation. It's solely because of the deal that was signed, that will hopefully be explored in the future.

If you goe throught some of the most fast-paced shots in Poison you can see him and Val and he is..."enjoying" their activities, accompanied by the lyrics "the worst part of this hell I can only blame myself" and "I should had known this would happened- all your red hot lies" implies that Angel WAS in an co-dependent relationship with Val- hence why he *just* moved out (he can do whatever he wants out of the studio, as stated by his contract) so he is halfway through the process- he *knows* Val is an abusive dickhead that would only hurt him, He is *scared* of him, he hates him- but at the same time there is this little part of him that still feel compelled to going back to him whenever his insecurities get brought out (episode 2, when Charlie sidelines him in favor of Sir Pentious, his go to response was hearing all of Val's voicemails) it's a really, really difficult situation.

It could also be fueling his low self worth, with Charlie seemingly moving on and Val being what he is, making Angel think he’s not worth redemption. I really hope we get more deep dives into characters in the following seasons.

I love Stayed Gone, the tv show bit is great characterisation for Vox and his gripe with Alastor but it works best with all the visual gags that go along with the lyrics.
7:49 Danny's take on Angel and Val, as a survivor myself, is spot on. It's important to understand the line between actual glorification and making the obscene palatable enough to sell to the public so that it resonates without being vulgar. Because, let's face it, objectification and sexual abuse are very much part of what Angel is going through, not just physical and verbal violence. We all know he's been r@ped before because he says, "Do you really think I can't tell when someone puts something in my drink?" AND, for the record, silence/uninformed compliance is not a yes; Angel just thinks he's too broken to be worth anything else (been there done that, can confirm it's a very real thing).
"The abusers wouldn't be an abusers if they weren't highly charismatic and great at manipulation". THAT PART. Also, Angel needing rehab for more than just the drugs but also from Val and his contributions to Angel's addictions.
I agree I wasn't sexuelly assaulted but I was abused a long time. I think what really showcases that it is not glorified is the episode with poison. Charlie messes up and Valentino get angry at angel and dou can see the fear in angels eyes he is pleasing Valentino as to not be treated harsher and is gaslighting himself to believe that that is what he wants because I can't cope with it otherwise. If you have to go back to your abuser at the end of the day that is the only way your can protect yourself even a little bit .
Right! I’ve never been sexually assaulted, so maybe I don’t have a say on this, but I never saw it as a glorification. I also feel like I’m the song, you can hear Angel NOT wanting to be in this situation, yet he still goes back to Valentino. I think it’s a good depiction of Angels situation, from both POVs. Angels (seeing his side of the relationship) and the viewers (we can clearly see that Val is abusive)

I just wanna say, thank you for bringing up the discourse about poison. So many reactors either pretend nothing was happening or that the controversies are just excuses to hate on Viv. Thank you for actually talking about it upfront and giving your input instead of weaseling around it. People have issues with Viv for a lot of reasons that i won’t get into but i will say as a victim myself, I don’t think they went about this wrong at all. I mean, the character attributes such as being in Hell and the powers Overlords have also add to the story and how their dynamic is portrayed and I feel the people that have an issue with this don’t really take that into consideration when talking about it. At least from what I’ve seen anyways. In fact most of the people i saw upset about this never watched the show and went based off the poison song and scenes alone.
I feel like most people arguing about the show glorifying an abusive relationship between Angel and Val have overlooked the fact that Val literally OWNS Angeldust’s soul. Val is a deal making demon much like Alistor and has the ability to force Angel to do whatever he commands kind of like how Alistor summoned Husk to work at the hotel

my understanding of Angel Dust and Val is that because Angel sold his soul to Val, so he doesnt have a choice, he HAS to go back. To me, its less about the abuse in an intimate partner violence situation and more about the abuse found in a human trafficking situation.
I think it’s both. All lot of human trafficking situations in more developed countries aren’t like a Taken situation. It’s usually an abuser finding a vulnerable person, creating a “trusting” relationship and then slowly manipulating and abusing their victim into trafficking. Which is what I believe happens to Angel with Valentino. This also explain the obsessive and controlling attitude Valentino has about Angel. Almost like a controlling and abusive partner.

2) "(...) we're discussing a certain has-been who has been spotted (...)" aka has-been as in fell-off and has been as in... has been seen, but ALSO has been as in sounds like Hazbin
3) "You're looking at the future, he's the (...)" aka looking at the future as in Vox is the future but also looking at the future as in Vox is the only one with visuals, so by definition you can only /look/ at the future with him

This song actually showed me a conversation I've rarely ever seen lol. As a fan of anime I see the sub or dub convo a lot in regards to Japanese. But stayed gone with the bloody rare line turns out to not really translate as well to other languages. It was interesting to see how different languages translated it and people arguing about English being the superior way to watch. Which is opposite of what I'm use to😂
I also think that “his medium is getting bloody rare” could also be about Alastor’s love of radio. Radio is Alastor’s main medium of expression and it’s dying being replaced by video

He can't get away from drugs completely because that red smoke that Val is always blowing from his cigarettes is a drug called Love Potion.
