I think the idea is that the song is initially supposed to be scuffed. When they are walking to the barracks its just them singing, but at 1:19 it does get significantly louder. In all honesty its probably just the reverb from the walls, but the movie leaves it open to the idea that's exactly when the geist of those past who sung this before join in. Germany is always the land where people fought for that soil, even back to Rome. The movie is a masterpiece at how much research it did on German culture.
The irony of this song is it’s about defending the borderline of the Rhine, but Germany actually crossed the border in both World Wars. Great song nonetheless.

Germany is still German! Social justice and multiculturalism may be a thing, but that doesn't mean we can no longer celebrate Oktoberfest! If someone says that you cannot be proud of being German, give them some time to embrace the present day and be thankful that the Jewish community in Germany is not as oppressed as before.

It was written in 1854 when Germany wasn't united, it's about defending the Rhein because about half a century earlier France took it.
In WW1 era rhine referred to all of its tributaries and distributaries.
The Rhine was no border to France in 1914,Alsace was German then.
