By the way, the 116 min is not the longest version (it was known as "sneak peak" version; there is a raw cut version - also time coded like this one you posted - that runs 127 min (!!!!!!!). Universal should truly think about releasing this in proper pic quality.
Hard Target Uncut !!! It'd sincerely be my number one action movie choice, because you can tell just by looking at it that TONS of incredible imagery was cut. It's a potential action masterpiece marred unnecessarily by cuts. As is, it's a brilliantly constructed movie. But with all the action and violence reinstated as John Woo originally intended, we're talking Hard Boiled or The Killer levels of genius! Bring it on, Universal! My wallet's aching!
the best part of the workprint is how many times he shoots the bad guy with the grenade point blank. The cruelty and absurdity is off the charts. Also the scene MISSING with Henriksen digging the grenade out of his pants lead me to believe that Sam Raimi must have gone and shot that scene on his own and added it in later when they made the R rated cut.
Another great point is Desperado. I remember listening to Rodriguez's commentary and he spoke out against the MPAA and how he had to remove the entire shootout between El Mariachi and Butcho. When they re-released Maricahi and Desperado for Blu-Ray, I was hoping they'd include the sequence. Alas, it wasn't present.... I wonder if he had a similar experience as Paul Anderson with Event Horizon. Did the studio allow the footage to rot away with time? I'd like to know.
7 years late to the reply but since Rodriguez himself edited the film, I'd imagine he would be the one who would have the footage. A lot of stuff had to be cut out of that movie actually.

A lot of the footage in this video is actually in the UK version of the film. For once, we didn't get the MPAA imposed cuts over here! Even the UK version has some stuff missing though.
In the blu ray, sorry about the shirt is extended, the some acrobatics of him in the mardi gras are in, and a few other little bits, its not the workprint, but it is close

Ah right. I'd be surprised if the Blu-ray has more footage than the existing DVD. As I said, about 80% of the footage in this video is actually in the film in the UK. Stuff like the extended shootout at the opening and the extended and additional kills during the finale.
dude i think van damme rocks and this is gotta b one of his best movies i so feel that universal have gotta re-release an extended cut of hard target dude this is one film that deserves that kind of treatment still love it to this day!!!

Eventually, I found a copy online, and another at a convention. It blew me away after sitting through so many "extended & uncut" movies where they only 3 minutes of bullshit. The extra material here really transforms a good action film into an AWESOME action film.
It's unfortunate that you americans don't have the uncut version of this underrated masterpiece. I'm not a great Van Damme Fan, but this is his best Action Movie period. It's the last John Woo Movie that really kicks ass like his famous Honk Kong Gems "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled". They released the uncut version in Europe. Man I gotta say, it's a complete different movie now... an epic Action-flick par exellence.

But every time I lose hope, 'Superman II: The Donner Cut' is released after 20 plus years. When I get discouraged, 'Little shop of Horrors' The director's cut comes out after 26 years. I just try and stay positive that we will see this version released.
Yeah, Robert Rodriguez even makes mention of it in Rebel Without a Crew. El Mariachi, which was released through Columbia/Tri-Star, initially received an NC-17 for violence. Reservoir Dogs, which was Miramax, got an R without batting an eyelash. I'll definitely check IMDB. I'm really curious what changed. Another movie that was cut to ribbons, though this was the studio/filmmaker's doing, was The Crow. So much was lost because they felt uncomfortable after Brandon Lee's death. Such a shame.

That makes me wonder; why didn't they make an unrated version, using branching pathways? The Corruptor had commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, the car chase. Beyond a joke this hasnt been released, I'm sure they will say they lost the footage or some crap. It was released on a french Blu/DVD set recently as a hidden extra. Considering adding some of these scenes to the Ultimate Cut released by CSchmidlapp.

If it helps, i've got some of the scenes you showed in this video, but in compressed blu-ray quality. I think Australia has an alternate release that includes a ton of footage the US doesn't include in their version. The version is have goes for 99 mins and 33 seconds. Funny how different countries will release different versions of movies because of one reason or another - kinda like An American Werewolf In Paris, literally a completely different movie here in Australia - no joke.
Even then, I don't get it. John Woo has still has name recognition and Van Damme's had a resurgence in popularity recently, thanks to some stand-out home video efforts, JCVD and The Expendables 2. On top of that, extended editions of actions movies are decent sellers. I don't think this would be a poor investment for Universal.

On the contrary, the fight between Van Damme and Henriksen was EXTENDED in the theatrical version. In this workprint there's no beating. Henriksen gets a kick to the chest, freeing Yancy Butler, then Van Damme throws the grenade and boom! That's it. No beating with the flaming 2x4, or oil drum hopping. No "hunting season is over" one-liner. That was added later, and it's really obvious when the new footage starts in the theatrical cut. The set doesn't really match.

Oh, Night of the Creeps! I was happier than a pig in shit when that came out on Blu-Ray with a bunch of extra features. It's one of my favorite horror movies. I'm actually working on cleaning up the VHS copy I have. Full color correction and cropping out the time code, because I did that for the Broken (Nine Inch Nails) movie. It will take some time, but it'll be worth it. I'd like a special edition for Time Cop too. That's another Van Damme flick that deserves attention, in my opinion.

Finally ist out on BD (theatre R-rated Cut(95 minutes AND including the Unrated Cut running about 99(!) minutes)....I'm well Aware that ist still not the DC or Workprint cut but you'd be surprised how much of the stuff shown in here is integrated I still miss the car getting blown up right before he drives up the bridge
I have the 99 minute edition (bought it a month ago) and I gotta say it is terrific! The violence and the balletic nature of the action scenes makes this movie a classic. I could watch it repeatedly, it's that good!
Nice vid. I used to have workprints of this movie and Stallone's COBRA on old VHS tapes but i lost them when my "good" friend borrowed them and went on extended vacation. Universal should release fucking movie uncut. Let me tell you,the way that MPAA ruins certain films is damn shame. And not just them,but Universal assholes too. One of my fave Stallone films NIGHTHAWKS was originally pre-Robocop movie gorefest,but the way they cut it down it turned into what nowdays would be PG-13 bullshit.

I was gonna' snag a UK copy a year ago, up until my regionless player decided to take a shit in my cinematic cereal. *growls* The UK is a little better about the violence I've noticed, so long as you don't kick someone while they're down or head-butt 'em. The UK release of Mission: Impossible II, another Woo film, would be an 'R' here in the states. The Biocite shootout is a hair longer and isn't nearly as choppy. That and neck-breaks are audiable... Weird, huh?

Dude, I fucking LOVE COBRA! It's one of my favorite Stallone movies. I didn't even know a workprint was available. I should have guessed with how choppy some of the shootings were. I think one of the reasons Universal has such a hard time with the MPAA is that they don't pay 'em enough, unlike Miramax (i.e. Disney). The studios bribe them for ratings, hence why there's no printed guidlines. Such a hypocrisy.
the reason of why they did not release the full version is simple back then this movie was too graphic for the American audience, I mean just think about this movie came out in 92 or 93 and not only was too graphic but also was made in a style that was much different for the western audience that I think is why the mpaa dicided to cut it and release it as a common Van Damme movie
Well, Universal has always treated Van Damme's movies like shit. When they released Sudden Death and Timecop initially, they were Pan-and-Scan only. Universal had embraced the format at the time and started releasing some stellar special editions (The Thing, Tremors), but they completely screwed Van Damme fans. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but I think it may have to do with demand and their low box office return. It's possible.
@Cryengine- No need for name calling, and I am by no means "liberal". The MPAA does NOT have set guidelines and often change with the times. At that time, the MPAA would not give the film an R-rating due to the excessive body count which is noted in Kenneth Hall's book, "John Woo: The Films" and Heard's "Ten Thousand Bullets". I suggest you actually do your research, like I did. Otherwise, it just makes YOU look stupid. :)

On the contrary, the fight between Van Damme and Henriksen was EXTENDED in the theatrical version. In this workprint there's no beating. Henriksen gets a kick to the chest, freeing Yancy Butler, then Van Damme throws the grenade and boom! That's it. No beating with the flaming 2x4, or oil drum hopping. No "hunting season is over" one-liner. That was added later, and it's really obvious when the new footage starts in the theatrical cut. The set doesn't really match.
That must be the other version I saw, cos i know there was a shorter ending and a longer one. I just cannot remember when/how I saw it for the life of me

Oh, Night of the Creeps! I was happier than a pig in shit when that came out on Blu-Ray with a bunch of extra features. It's one of my favorite horror movies. I'm actually working on cleaning up the VHS copy I have. Full color correction and cropping out the time code, because I did that for the Broken (Nine Inch Nails) movie. It will take some time, but it'll be worth it. I'd like a special edition for Time Cop too. That's another Van Damme flick that deserves attention, in my opinion.

Amen, brother. Sadly, I'm thinking Universal won't be getting around to it any time soon. I don't get it. This is easy money. Fans wouldn't be blowing money on bootlegs anymore, and the folks responsible for making this money happen would actually get a nice royalty check. It's like, come the fuck on. Just gives a director's cut, with commentary. That's a very easy task.... Sheesh!
Finally ist out on BD (theatre R-rated Cut(95 minutes AND including the Unrated Cut running about 99(!) minutes)....I'm well Aware that ist still not the DC or Workprint cut but you'd be surprised how much of the stuff shown in here is integrated

I have the 99 minute edition (bought it a month ago) and I gotta say it is terrific! The violence and the balletic nature of the action scenes makes this movie a classic. I could watch it repeatedly, it's that good!

Nice vid. I used to have workprints of this movie and Stallone's COBRA on old VHS tapes but i lost them when my "good" friend borrowed them and went on extended vacation.
Universal should release fucking movie uncut. Let me tell you,the way that MPAA ruins certain films is damn shame. And not just them,but Universal assholes too. One of my fave Stallone films NIGHTHAWKS was originally pre-Robocop movie gorefest,but the way they cut it down it turned into what nowdays would be PG-13 bullshit.
Give at a rest pal shooting scene and the scene where natasha's father rolled down the hill with the fuel can is on my blue ray version in the uk, the movie lasts 99 minutes

I was gonna' snag a UK copy a year ago, up until my regionless player decided to take a shit in my cinematic cereal. *growls*
The UK is a little better about the violence I've noticed, so long as you don't kick someone while they're down or head-butt 'em. The UK release of Mission: Impossible II, another Woo film, would be an 'R' here in the states. The Biocite shootout is a hair longer and isn't nearly as choppy. That and neck-breaks are audiable... Weird, huh?

Universal is a curious beast when it comes to their movies. From what I understand, Darkman - another Sam Raimi production - was heavily edited as well. Shit, let us not forget the controversy over House of 1,000 Corpses. Paramount is another offender. The uncut version of Event Horizon... So want it.

Even after big budget squip-fests like Total Recall, Robocop (1 and 2) the MPAA said "Whoa Hard Target is too violent" and demanded all the cuts. Really?

A.J. here - That's the thing that pisses me off though; even the European version isn't uncut. It has more action than the American version, yes, but it's not Woo's cut. Really, the workprint is as close as it comes. Still, why not release the international cut? Fox released the international cut of Taken on DVD/Blu-Ray and it sold better than the PG-13 edit. Action fans don't mind shelling out for another copy if it means more action. Look at Rambo. WTF, Universal?!

Dude, I fucking LOVE COBRA! It's one of my favorite Stallone movies. I didn't even know a workprint was available. I should have guessed with how choppy some of the shootings were.
I think one of the reasons Universal has such a hard time with the MPAA is that they don't pay 'em enough, unlike Miramax (i.e. Disney). The studios bribe them for ratings, hence why there's no printed guidlines. Such a hypocrisy.
The theatrical release was good... but it would be awesome if there was no MPAA involvement in the movie industry.
the reason of why they did not release the full version is simple back then this movie was too graphic for the American audience, I mean just think about this movie came out in 92 or 93 and not only was too graphic but also was made in a style that was much different for the western audience that I think is why the mpaa dicided to cut it and release it as a common Van Damme movie
Well, Universal has always treated Van Damme's movies like shit. When they released Sudden Death and Timecop initially, they were Pan-and-Scan only. Universal had embraced the format at the time and started releasing some stellar special editions (The Thing, Tremors), but they completely screwed Van Damme fans. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but I think it may have to do with demand and their low box office return. It's possible.
@Cryengine- No need for name calling, and I am by no means "liberal". The MPAA does NOT have set guidelines and often change with the times. At that time, the MPAA would not give the film an R-rating due to the excessive body count which is noted in Kenneth Hall's book, "John Woo: The Films" and Heard's "Ten Thousand Bullets".
I suggest you actually do your research, like I did. Otherwise, it just makes YOU look stupid. :)
