Thank you for caring and for these very informative videos! I used to take advice from youtubers who aren’t informed and that hurt my skin but for the last 2 years I love hearing information that come from people who are actually educated in skincare, like you! Thank you very much again and keep up the good work!

I used a good retinol for three years before using Tretinoin. I saw more benefits in 3 months using Tretinoin than 3 years with the retinol. Now I've been using Tretinoin going on 5 years and am thrilled with the results. I do get a prescription from my doctor. Always enjoy your videos, Dr. Sam. Many blessings..MaryEllen

@@MaryEllenAfter60 Dear Mary Ellen. Firstly let me say, I am a recent subscriber of yours and appreciate your channel greatly. I am 57 yo, have been using Retinol 1% by The Ordinary and just got my first Retin A 0.025 to start with prescribed by a dermatologist.
Can you tell please, do you think that the use of Retinol for 3 years got your skin prepared for Retin A so to speak, as in caused less irritation? Also, when you started Retin A and applied it not every evening, did you continue to apply your Retinol on non-Retin A evenings? I would appreciate the answer

    • @MaryEllenAfter60
      @MaryEllenAfter60 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@marinaalex0510 Yes, I do think using the retinol for 3 years helped my skin adjust to the Retin A. My doctor recommend I use it twice a week for the first month. Marina, I did not use retinols after I started Retin A. My doctor said it would be fine, but I ran out, and just didn't repurchase. Thank you..MaryEllen

Very helpful. Thank you. I used OTC Differin for 9-10 months. I don't have acne and hoped for an anti-aging benefit. It didn't provide one for me. I now use Paula's Choice 1% retinol booster and find it provides anti-aging benefits including firming, smoothing and strengthening my skin. I recently added TO Buffet for peptides to my routine and found it increased the effectiveness of the retinol.

I've hit my Goldilocks place with retinaldehyde. I'm 47 and have used it for over ten years with tangible results. I know it gets into my skin because I often wake up with a unique sort of "numbness" below the surface of my skin. It's not irritation per se, just a feeling of things happening below the surface.
I think many users don't believe its effective, because they don't experience irritation or flaking (like that's a good thing?) Real results talke months to see, but to me some positive changes appears quickly. In maybe two weeks the surface texture and radiance improves. I see no point in progress to tretinoin which invasive for me and doesn't suit my tendency to go overzelous in my use of products.

Really useful advice, thank you again Dr Sam. Please do a video about how often should we change the products in our routine, if we should stick "forever" to some products that work for our skin, or if our skin gets use to them so they stop working. Or is that a myth? I'm asking because I find myself always wanting to test new products (once I finish a bottle of course, I want to try something else), but don't know if all those changes are making any good. Thank you 😘

Omgggg yes please share about a safe routine you can build around retinoid! I have been so careful since I started on tret (for acne mainly, but have been absolutely loving it!) and I’m always a little tense about adding something like a serum (Ordinary’s Buffet, for instance) or Azelaic Acid with it. Disclaimer that I have been on tret for nearly a year and didn’t have any sensitivity while introducing it or otherwise. Can’t wait for the next video! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ ps, just received my cleanser and moisturizer replacements a few days ago. As always, fast shipping to the US 👏🏼

The container the retinol comes in is important, it cannot be transparent and only what you use should be exposed to air, because it breaks down very easily. The best is skinceuticals 1.00, most other brands have very low retinol content. It will flake your skin initially until your skin gets used to it, or you could use a lower dosage. It works, use it at night and use sunblock during the day. Honestly, if it doesn't burn initially it doesn't have enough retinol, like I mentioned your skin will get used to it.

This was a very helpful video Dr. Sam! I'm currently using A313. It has retinol esters (I think retinyl acetate, retinyl propionate and retinyl palmitate?) and it is not too strong for my skin. But I think it works better than some other OTC retinoids I have tried. It's kind of greasy but I only use it 3 times/week so I don't really care (and I can skip the moisturiser!)

Do you know how quickly Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate degrades? Dr. Jetske Ultee claims it is only active when in an airless pump and when it's fresh and stored in a fridge, the Granactive Retinoids from The Ordinary don't work according to her. Does it need to be in an airless pump and is a product that has been sitting on the shelf in a store for a while likely degraded?

Hi dr Sam. I really enjoy your videos and find them informative. I am 29 and currently using epiduo for acne. Not long began using. I would love to eventually try stronger retinoids. Should it still give a glow even though more effective for acne?
    Many thanks x

Hold on girl.. in epidou you have benzoylperoxide. Epidou is an acne Treatment, not used cause its anti agin benefits! If you can, just use as spot treatment. Better try another retinol product for its positiv effects - not combined with epidou!

jana m I know I just hoped it would give me the added benefits of a stronger retinoid too. I use it every night so currently no room for another retinoid product, hopefully when my acne clears up. I’m 30 so also trying to consider anti aging too! Xx
      Thank you 😊

Retinol really helps with my eczema! I just needed to find the right product formulation for me (the Paula's choice retinol body treatment) that is not too drying.

Hi Dr. Sam. Very informative video. If living in the UK what is your advise on getting a tretenion prescription for anti ageing (not acne)? There’s no way an NHS GP would prescribe for that and I believe a standard dermatologist isn’t allowed to prescribe it (I may be wrong on that). Any advise? I love in Bristol. Thanks very much.

Thanks for your always educating videos and your great products. I would be very greatful if you would explain the difference between Redap and Retin A. They are both for acne, but are they equally good? And do they have the same anti aging effects?

Looking more closely on my Redap medication I realize that you already covered my question in this video. Great!

Thank you so much for such a clear and informative video on Retinoids. I just stopped using all of my products for the last 3 weeks because the area around my nose and mouth can't handle my tretinoin. I was using 0.05% everywhere else for 5 months without a problem but anytime I tried even a weaker dose (0.025%) that area would freak out. My Dermatologist had me quit everything and use Cloderm cream for 4 days and then I was supposed to use Elidel cream for 10-14 days but it was so expensive I didn't buy it and hoped that if I just gave my skin a break it would calm down. It is still a bit red. Maybe I should try a Retinal product in that area instead. My skin is normal and I'm 57 years old. What do you think?

Hello! Will the purging period with retinoids (or any active for that matter) cause only cystic type acne? For example, if many new closed comedones are appearing, are these the result of purging or of another product clogging the pores?

Hi Dr. Sam, I’m in my early twenties and thinking of introducing retinoids into my skincare routine. I have oily combo skin. I used to suffer from mild acne/blemishes prone skin in my forehead area. And I the texture of my skin isn’t as smooth anymore and is starting to develop fine lines (?). I do occasionally get blemishes here and there and the hormonal painful pimple during the time of the month. Would Differin be a good start to introduce retinoids? Thank you xx
