My two favorite will always be Roger Waters and Cliff Burton. I know people say that Roger is more of a song writer, but I’d say those songs would be nothing without his Bass work.
I would argue if we are talking about people who revolutionized bass playing Burton would be number one. You go watch the opening of for whom the bells tolls live and you kinda get scared watching that unfold😧
Nobody gonna question that Krist Novoselic, the bassist from Nirvana not even getting an honourable mention? Lithium and Come as you are have amazing basslines
Basically most of Nirvanas back catalogue have mint basslines, Novoselic may not be capable of doing some mint shit but the basslines he's created are absolute gold
Making a list like this is ridiculous. I mean these are all great bass players don't get me wrong. But it's like The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Whoever the person is making the list will certainly pick there favorite flavor.
Ray Manzarek of the doors literally played bass with one hand and keys with the other. Obviously the bass was on keys but it’s still bass. Honorable mention right there
He is underrated because he is in the shadow of Freddie mercury and Brian May.The same happens with roger taylor. When you have the best vocalist and guitarrist of history ita hard to show up
Wow I didnt even think of Duff and Krist. Great calls. I also missed Eric Wilson on this list, and definitely ws wondering where Jack Bruce was u til he was an, "honorable mention." I guess we all have out own taste, but I like your pics haha.
not sure about the whole list but I agree with #1. geddy is an innovative and prolific multi-instrumentalist and bass guitar virtuoso. no doubt that he is currently the best bass guitarist he's ever been after 40+ years of recording and performing and 30 albums. honestly, who can compare to his resume?
My top ten: 01 Geddy Lee (Rush) 02 John Entwistle (The Who) 03 Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) 04 John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) 05 Cliff Burton (Metallica) 06 Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 07 Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) 08 Chris Squire (Yes) 09 Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath) 10 John Deacon (Queen)
My top 10 roughly based on yours. 10 - Dave Ellefson (based on playing and not on what he did) 9 - John Deacon 8 - Cliff Burton 7 - Paul McCartney 6 - John Myung 5 - John Paul Jones 4 - Flea 3 - Les Claypool 2 - John Entwisle 1 - Billy Sheehan
For years I couldn't have cared if ANY rock band even had a bass guitar, then I saw a bass solo Chris Squire did on one of my Yes DVD's and I've changed my mind on that. He easily should've made this list in the #1 or #2 slot way above most of these guys on the list. The folks making the list are probably too young to even know who "Yes" is !!!
James Walls Yeah, I agree. I'm 26 but I've been listening to these guys since I was a wee shit. Honestly, it seems like these lists are just rehashed MTV and VH1 "Top *insert thingie here* lists". This might as well have been a VH1 special on bassists that aired 10 years ago. All the obvious ones, but missing some of the EXTREMELY obvious ones!
Krist Novoselic deserves a spot. Just because Nirvana's approach towards concerts and music was unique and kinda casual doesn't change the fact that he's a great bassist.
You guys left some of the greatest bass players off the list . No Roger Waters ? Chris Squire . Jack Bruce ? Are you serious? How is Paul Mcartney ahead of John Paul Jones . Come on get it together do a real list next time
Watch Mojo Picking the Bassists for this video: “Hey Mojo who are some bass players everyone knows?” “I dunno watch, what was that one song with the bass in it?” “Oh I love that one. Put him on the list”
***** Musicians know who Alex Lifeson is, and a lot of them cite him as an influence. But assholes who write on stuff like Rolling Stone magazine barely list him. Christ, on the top 100 guitarist list, he is ranked 98. Below people like fucking Kurt Cobain. KURT COBAIN. What a disgrace.
Entwistle should be #1. The man built his first electric bass, and played it different from everyone else at the time. There wouldn’t be all the great bass guitarists without John.
My top 10 10. jpj 9. Paul McCartney 8. Roger Waters 7. John deacon 6. Steve harris 5. John Entwstle 4. Geddy Lee 3. Cliff Burton 2. Les claypool 1. Flea
Most are not aware of the talent that John Paul Jones contributed to Led Zeppelin! He was multi talented and often overlooked. He wrote or collaborated on most songs, but always remained in the shadows! It was always Page,Bonham,or Plant that took most of the glory! While Jones was in the background actually doing all of the heavy lifting! Just saying!
+Del McTarsney I think all members of the band were brilliant in their own way. Plant was one of the best rock vocalists (well at least in his prime but he's an old guy anyway), Page was one of the great guitar gods despite him playing sloppy at times (I won't deny that but when he's good, he's really good), and Bonzo is arguably the best and my favorite drummer. However, JPJ was definitely a bass God, and he can play some amazing basslines for the Zep. The Lemon Song and Achilles Last Stand are some of my favorite Jonesy performances.
+Del McTarsney Ramble on is what made me want to play the bass. That line is just amazing. JPJ was severely under rated. But like most great bass players, he was okay with not stealing the limelight. Entwistle was the same way.
+Gungnir Odin spear Alex Lifeson from Rush is underrated, and he's the same way, content with not stealing the limelight, . His first solo on La Villa Strangiato had a big influence on me.
My Top Three (In no particular order): 1. Les Claypool - Primus Technical Master 2. Geddy Lee - Rush Most influential 3. Flea - RHCP Personal Favourite
1. John Paul Jones 2. Geddy LEE 3. John Entwistle 4. Chris Squire 5. Pete Way 6. Steve Harris 7. Les Claypool 8. FLEA 9. PAUL 10. Michael Anthony 11. Geezer 12. A dude named Ralph
Fuck yeah. Justin is a beast. Just listen to schism. I believe Jason Newsted was a underrated bassist too. Definitely not top ten but great none the less.
10 - Paul McCartney 9 - John Entwhistle 8 - Cliff Burton 7 - John Paul Jones 6 - Flea 5 - Chris Squire 4 - John Myung 3 - Les Claypool 2 - Geddy Lee 1 - Jaco Pastorious (not including Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, etc. because they are strictly jazz bassists) There’s my opinion. Nobody agrees with WatchMojo. Edit: I caused quite a bit of an argument in the replies. I only know a limited amount of music, so please do not take my opinion too seriously. Edit 2: I listened to Weather Report for the first time. Pastorious would definitely be number 2 or maybe even 1. Edit 3: Changed list.
What's technical about slapping the bass. He obviously is not keeping up or never took a bass course. Again you want to see theatrics and not the professionalism
Rang Klos Finally someone in the comments section that I can agree with. YES FUCKING CHRIS SQUIRE... Listen to roundabout, if any of you don't believe me.
I like this list. Almost every bassist had an influence on me as a bass player. My opinion though is that #4, 3 and 2 are popularity contest winners. Amazing bands and excellent musicians. However when it comes to pure bass playing, many in the bottom of this list supercede them. Also Geezer should absolutely make the list. I could go on for days as to why. Personally Paul, John, and John were crucial parts of their bands but if we're talking strictly bass playing, Les, Steve, Flea, Cliff and certainly Geezer should be ahead of them I'm my opinion.
Agree (at least concerning Claypool and McCartney)! As much as I love the Beatles, McCartney always been my least favourite one. His songs, especially the ones he wrote without Lennon, are way too much kitsch for my taste. I expected Ley Claypool to be among the top 5 just because of his mad skill. The order of the rest can be argued about but it's really a lottery because they were all great. But, and that's a BIG BUT, if the list takes commercial success and extra skills (like songwriting) into account: Where the hell is Sting? He is a great musician, too, and a very skilful jazz-influenced bassist!
John Deacon should've been higher on the list. The basslines in Liar, Don't Try Suicide, AOBTD and Under Pressure are incredible. He also played the piano and the drums. No wonder he's my favorite member of Queen.
If you're talking about the best bass players of all time, it surely is about your skill on a bass guitar. Paul was a great songwriter and musician, but we has a jack of all trades.
Micah Robinson I agree for real. Like this video is actually trying to say the Beatles had a better base player than Primus. I like the Beatles in all but Claypool is with out a question a better bassist than that.
I like Paul McCartney don't get me wrong pause my favorite Beatle but he's definitely not in the top three a lot of those other bases are much better than him much more. Talent
John vincent Not really, they WERE at their peak, very, very proficient in their particular instruments, they were always good at live performances too, and no Cliff ain't no joke
You crazy not accepting Lee as number one. Basically the only accurate placement in this list. Admittedly you top four are excellent choices for top four.
While the title said “rock” they stuck to rockers instead of metal. I know they did add cliff but he’s someone they can’t leave out. I also think that lemmy is a good bassist and very influential, I do not think he is on par with theses bassists, technically.

Where is Lemmy? He's missed.
Just saying!
exactly. Jones is underrated. He is an outstanding musician
+Del McTarsney John Paul Jones wrote & taught the band the riff for Black Dog. That's one HELL of a bass line

I believe Les Claypool and Flea should have been higher on the list.

Yes, I agree. Les Claypool should be in the top 3 and Cliff should top 1.
John Deacon should've been higher on the list. The basslines in Liar, Don't Try Suicide, AOBTD and Under Pressure are incredible. He also played the piano and the drums. No wonder he's my favorite member of Queen.
