Another great piece of work! I've been following your videos for quite a while now and as a person coming from a non-wrestling background, your work has sincerely helped me a lot in my MMA classes. Thank you so much for the content you put out and keep up the amazing work!
I’ve said it many times and will say it again - Whittaker style is primarily based around beating powerful wrestlers and wrestle boxers, like Brunson, Jacare and Romero. To beat Adesanya he must change his style to incorporate more wrestling.
@wutup5566 Amazing analysis! I thought Whittaker would feint the strike and go for the takedown and vice versa. Israel like to pull counter leaving his body stationary for body punches/kicks. Whittaker did neither 😔
Interesting to note that Rob is the 2017 Australian National Wrestling Champion AND had qualified for the Olympics, so that helps too. He's as much of a wrestler as anyone else.
Great explanations... Really I founded extraordinary how Robert handled grapplers like Romero and Jacare when I saw the fights... With this video I understood everything...
OMG i just can't thank you enough for the amount of analysis and breakdown you have done and gave us this beautiful content, thank you so much this is just what i was looking for and you presented the information in a concise and systematic manner.
So this is a different context but Whittaker sacrificing his back to stand up reminds me of my jitz. 😂 Because my class is such a high-level it forced me to develop a weird style. (Purple belts and beyond rarely want to go over basics.) I often gave my back because it was EASIER to escape than mount. To this day I feel more comfortable with someone on my back than in mount.
Perhaps Rob has spent so much time honing his abilities against wrestlers and grapplers with inferior striking, that he now feel overwhelmed by other strikers such as Adesanya. I hope to see him win back that title
Nico Repetto been striking since he was 9, he’s probably top 10 strikers on the planet right now lol. You put the top 5 guys in there on any given night and they can stop each other. If adesanya was flat on his back after getting hit by Romero people would say the same shit
Is hard to say that, we cant say that because Adesanya is a elite, elite, really elite striker with a lot of pure striking matchs so Adesanya is not a someone that we can bash if other guy loose to him
Nah KHAMZAT not just a wrestler is also HELL OF A GRAPPLER I think you didn't watch what KHAMZAT do in a grappling match to Luke rockhold he fucking submitted him from button position without need to wrestle KHAMZAT will wins inchalah
Fightin a wrestler next month imma blue belt and can hold my own on the ground but wanna get my opponent nice and tired from trying to take me down thank you for this my friend
You need to see the moment before you commence any form of grappling exchanges Izzy is unique in the sense he makes it hard for a opening, Max Holloway also
@@juliusmatthuies963 Izzy is unique, in the sense that he primarly his footwork is his biggest key to keeping the fight standing, rather than desperately trying to improve his takedown defense. That being said, Izzy's takedown defense is solid, don't get me wrong. However, he also understands that once he faces guys who are on caliber wrestlers such as Khamzat, his footwork is a bigger component than his TDD, because if we're being frank, his TDD alone wouldn't hold up against Khamzat
Great breakdown video...your video is amazing. thanks for your hard work. I think Whitaker is gonna come back stronger than ever. I always liked him because he strives to be the IDEAL martial artist just like GSP. I want him to starch Adesanya in their rematch.
i was thinking of who has the best takedown defense in the UFC and whittaker came to mind. He faces some of the best takedown artist in the game and still gets it doen
Great work sir!. Hopefully in the future we get to see a healthy Rob perform! I personally feel he should be remembered as a top 5 middleweight of all time!
ive never understood why a guy with such amazing wrestling credentials prefers to keep it standing, i usually prefer the fighters who stand and bang but id love to see robert mix it up and be aggressive with his wrestling a bit more
Is 'active turtle' better with the near side or far side leg up for getting up? Or is it just preferable to use the side near the cage no matter where the opponent is?
actually there was this crazy bjj guy that fought the same night as cruze vs cejudo. That guy had some serious ground grappling game, maybe he'd be able to get out of the Dagstani legcuffs.
Nobody, cause I'm 3 months in the future and it was NEVER announced. He's going to clown on Dricus in a few months and idk what khamzat has been doing the last few months
We'll see about, that he dominated usman, until he got his hand broken, unmans always training so having a 9 day camp is better than having a broken hand in the middle of a fight
Love your breakdowns so this is by no means a knock down of your excellent commentary. But wrestling already includes "Referee's position" as an integral part of the sport, both offensively and defensively to try to stand back up (especially Folkstyle- and Catch wrestling), so there's no need to really come up with new names such as "active turtle" to describe an fundamental position. Especially since there's a big difference in Turtle (= crouching down to close the gaps, in order to defend submissions) and Referee's position (= extending limps and widening the gaps, in order to stand back up). It's clear from your videos that Whittaker is building up base and standing from a Referee's position (big gaps), and not from a Turtle (no gaps).
PS. You can check Frank Shamrock's old instructional videos on this for a more Catch wrestling style overview. He explained all these in late 90s/early 2000s.
Is it odd to say many traditional martial artists find particular success in MMA once they cover their grappling base? Wonderboy is another great example of very good wrestling defense that often opens up his opponent to a Karate klinik.
To beat dagestani wrestlers you must train on the basic i did it and have controlled my oppents really good after that but i allso got som good stuff from my chinese trainer that teach me good stuff so Robert Will only win if he start to practice dagestani wrestling ❤️👊🤫
Correct. I even mention that it in my Chuck Liddel video. But a lot of people love the term "Anti Wrestling" so I thought I would just throw it in as a synonym for takedown defence.
I didn't realize he wrestled at such a high level. However, it makes all the sense combing that with working with top wrestlers preparing for fights with that freestyle background. I've watched so many of his fights and watching shaking of takedowns that would have been finished on 99 percent of other fighters is incredible. Anybody whose ever wrestled out there (at any level) has to appreciate what this guy can do. I wrestled in college and what I see I a guy who is extremely good at positioning and the fundamentals. It's the simple stuff that wins matches. Before anyone trolls no I'm not putting myself in the same category of a UFC champ. This guy is world class.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!

Interesting point, he also lost to Wonderboy at welterweight.
100% agree

Takedown defense and anti-grappling techniques are my favorite aspect of mma.
The yin to my yang

Yea defense in general is amazing. Any asshole can go on the offensive after a little training. Defense requires real IQ
It's people that do MMA analysis that make it worth getting out of bed

Thank you very much for the kind words. Really happy that I was able to help educate. 🙏
he's actually a good wrestler which is crazy cuz he doesn't wrestle in the cage
He wrestles when he has to. He took down Gastelum and Till with ease.
@@H.K.5 he needs to do it more against Adesanya in the rematch at UFC 270 at Cape Town or Auckland
Great material to learn from. After watching these clips I started realizing how much skill many MMA fighters lack.
Thanks for coming through as always, chief

wall work is a whole new art by itself.
Wish he could add more offensive wrestling and grappling skills in to his fights because he is good at it.
Really enjoyed this one, Sonny. The turtle/back defense in particular is fascinating.
Thanks Dan! I spent a long time on this one and the turtle section was really why I wanted to make the entire video. Hope life is treating you well!

Thank you! I suggest checking out the work of Priit Mihkelson for more on that topic 🙏
@@SonnyBrown great! Certainly will, I have been at some classes of Priit and that was game changing. Thanks again!

Yeah I had been focused on wrestling. This year it could change.
Nice work Sunny i certainly did learn something and eagerly await your next clip
Thanks Miklos! Appreciate it mate 👍👊
Amazing
🙏
Thank you bro I have a fight upcoming and I am a better striker than a grappler, this helps a lot 💪🏼💪🏼
Hear after when Khmzat said he would like 2 be buddy buddy with Whittaker. I would 2 after this vid
thanks for this deep analysis!
Awsome analysis .José Aldo takedown defense ,please .
Im not surprised Khamzat suddenly sick
Stick to blonde anime girls kid
The active turtle works for him because he’s clearly extremely explosive and powerful
Great video! Thanks
I just hope that he will be at the top of his wrestling 🤼 skills to defend from Chimaev and beat him!!!
Awesome breakdown! 🙏🏼🔥

Great analysis bro well done
Appreciate it!🙏
Great commentary Sonny 👌
Thanks Royce!
You are amazing, your work is amazing!
Excellent!
As he stopped Romero’s wrestling, i have no doubt about stopping Chimaev who is less powerful man.
We'll see
Romero fight was years ago, Khamzat is a different grappler with much better wrist control than Romero
Wow thank you
Learned about the posting turtle, thank you Sonny
thanks for the awesome breakdown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah

Who is here after the match between Chimaev and Whittaker has been confirmed by Dana White
I would love to see Whittaker vs Usman
Would be sweet! 🙏
Usman would fail to accomplish what Yoel failed to do and Yoel is much bigger than Usman
